HI, id already built this,last year,but wasnt happy with it,so during the recent hot spell,decided to have a better go at it,with having 5x in the stash,thought if it doesnt turn out right,kids can play with it? The kit is by Glencoe,not sure if it was issued by Hawk originally?,but this has been released by glencoe quite a few times,there was even a 50 year anniversary issue,no different,just some box details? point 1... the kit is dirt cheap,and you can do so much with it,there must be at least 70 launches of it with different payloads,different carrier rockets? point 2,you can display it as is,or do the open payload view... point 3,IT MUST BE THE ONLY..?..space model to come with a stand,to build,which contains a ratchet to turn,via a trumpton type handle,and thus cause a chirping,clicking noise,to mimic the satelite signal...so the options to display,are yours.. point4..it could of been the first satellite in space,beating the sputnik,by a couple of years,if only the US had filled the upper stage tanks?see history later? point 5...the first use of transistors for space... point 6.payload designed by,DR.James van Allen,it took this satellite and two more to discover...The radiation belts around the earth. the amount of dust in orbit..the amount of micrometeoidal dust impacting future space craft. the list goes on and on.....i,ll put it in the history with the finished model..but its fair to say,without this little baby,man would not have survived space,though the batteries ran out pretty quick,explorer 1, stopped in orbit until march 31,1970. The only drawbacks with the kit,i found with the older issue the decals fell apart,would be worth covering with decal fix first,if you build the older,90,s kit,or its that cheap to buy,just buy a new one? And i thought the operating stand,was very fifties,which it is?,but have not used it,find a use as a bird scarer,under a windmill,thats about the best use for it, the payload of the rocket,looks....well a bit simplified,but once you see the photo,s of it,its extremely accurate... SO IM GOING TO BUILD....explorer 1 and explorer 4,the two main ones before the jupiter rocket,its carrier,jupiter c actually ,the c for composite,as it was a bringing together of various military missiles,its also called juno 1....alpha one...explorer one....or satellite 1958 alpha before the jupiter rocket ,was moved to the redstone phase/mercury phase and manned launches.. cheers Don
