  1. Hi, I don't have any fancy airbrushes and paint by hand at the moment so wondered if anyone has any experience in painting models by hand and producing decent finishes with a pattern like this one below ? I'm stumped on how to begin but want to have a crack at it as I have the two models below in my stash waiting to be completed. Thanks in advance
  2. Wilder Paints and Powders The first time this reviewer had heard of Wilder paints was when this review selection was given to me by our friendly postman. So for the time being this review will be constrained to the information I have read rather than used. But with a couple of projects nearly at the weathering stage I will come back and write up my findings. First of all, Wilder have a number of different product lines, a selection of each have been included in the two boxes and four loose jars that arrived at BM’s London offices the other day. These are:- Gunpowder Line The Gunpowder Line consists of coloured weathering pigment powders, each in a 50ml plastic jar, that can be applied onto the model dry to obtain dust effects for example. Both water based thinner and enamel thinner can also be used to spread the pigments in order to obtain different effects while also fixing them to the model. Gunpowder pigments can also be built up in layers to represent thick layers of mud or rust. It is recommended that you use FX-01 Fixer when doing so. These powders can also be mixed with other paints like acrylics and enamels in order to alter the tone or to obtain thick textured earth and rust effects. You can obtain the most realistic results when using different rust or earth tones together. Our sample included:- GP02 – Black GP03 – Dry Russian Earth GP06 – Brown Russian Earth GP10 – Road European Clay GP11 – Old Grease GP27 – Beach Sand GP28 – Desert Sand GP29 – River Sand Textured Earth The Textured Earth tones are an acrylic based line of paints containing grains, again in 50ml jars. These colours are great for creating ground surfaces on dioramas. Each colour comes in two textures. These grains are fine and stony. You can pour the colours right from the jar and spread them onto your diorama. You can thin them using water if you feel it is necessary. It will take the Textured Earth colours about one day to dry. They will not shrink or crack. Use the different tones together in order to obtain authentic looking multi-toned ground work. You can also paint additional ground tones or add both enamel or acrylic washes (for example the Wilder NitroLine) over the solidified Textured Earth colours. It will be best to locate any structures, trees and foliage on the diorama while the paint is still wet. Our Sample Included:- TE01 – Fine Dark Russian TE02 – Stony Dark Russian TE05 – Fine Light Brown TE06 – Stony Light Brown SN01 – Snow Effect NitroLine The NitroLine are enamel based products for quickly and easily applying various weathering effects onto all types of models and dioramas. NitroLine products can be used straight from the bottle or thinned using enamel thinner. NitroLine products work best over acrylic finishes. Thoroughly mix and shake the bottle prior to use for best results. Shadow Washes: Washes are a quick means of adding subtle fake shadows and tonal variations. These effects will help to highlight details such as rivets, seams and textures. Washes also add more tones to a finish. Applying washes is usually the first weathering step after a base coat if no filters are needed. Even today some armour modellers prefer washes as the only weathering step needed to finish a model. The percentages of a mix can differ depending on where and why the wash is being applied. Our samples included:- NL03 – Brown Shadow Wash NL05 – Old Rust Effect NL08 – Light Rust Effect NL09 – Light Grey Blue Filter NL10 – Vibrant Blue Filter NL27 – Brown Rust Speckling Effect NL28 – Ochre Rust Speckling Effect NL29 – Brown Mud Spatter Speckling Effect NL30 – Grey Dirt Spatter Speckling Effect NL34 – Murky Water Wet Effect Finally we were also sent a single jar of:- SF01 – Soldering Flux which is applied using a paintbrush onto photo-etched surfaces where soldering is to take place. Conclusion I’m looking forward to trying this out and from the quick trial run I have found that the Textured Earth and Gunpowder Line items are very fine and you don’t need much to create an effective weathering look on whatever you’re building. Oh! and beware, the powder gets everywhere if you’re not careful. I’ve now got a lovely weathered keyboard and trouser leg. As stated earlier I will be using these on a couple of builds and update this review shortly. But for now, from my brief experiment I think they will be great to work with and I'm looking forward to trying out the soldering flux in particular as I have some serious PE work planned that could benfit.
