Sorry, not the superb new Airfix kit, but the much more affordable (and still OK) 1983 mould, dressed up to represent XM597 during Black Buck 5, the first of the Shrike anti-radar missions. The same aircraft undertook Black Buck 6, the only one of the Black Buck missions that actually hit its target as intended, but ended up with a broken refuelling probe, diversion to Rio and internment! The aircraft now sits outside at the Museum of Flight in East Fortune, near Edinburgh. The kit is very basic with raised panel lines and the hard thick plastic makes it a bit of a beast to build. But I got there in the end and it definitely looks like a Vulcan. Due to the current (and possibly ongoing) absence of many Humbrol enamel tins from the market, I had to use a Humbrol rattle can for the upper surface Medium Sea Grey. It worked surprisingly well for a first attempt, but sadly it did not match well with the tin of MSG I used to touch up areas such as the cockpit canopy. The Shrikes, pylons and adaptors all came from the spares box (ex Hasegawa I think). The jammer came from an old ESCI kit. I added some sprue detail in the cockpit and boxed in the access trunk in order to leave the hatch open. None of this can be seen, of course!!! ....and although I didn't use it, I couldn't resist mounting the kit's Blue Steel missile on a maintenance frame!

Hi guys West Middlesex Model Club was contacted recently asking if someone could build an Airfix Vulcan for a guy who used to be a flight engineer on these before the Black Buck missions. He had been bought the kit many years ago and he has never got round to it. For some crazy reason I put my hand up and volunteered. I must be a glutton for punishment and it has been maybe 20 years since I last had a go at one of these. I will probably end up rescribing the beast as the horrible raised details will not survive the clean up required. I know this kit has many issues quality and accuracy wise which I am not fussed about. Really looking forward to a quick build and getting to the paint stage which I am looking forward to. Hopefully I can do a good job on this. Looking to mount on a wooden base at the end. I will need to do some research for a hard stand concrete base replica thing to mount to the wooden base. It could be interesting finding one big enough. Childhoodmemories. IMAG1442 by Mark Inman, on Flickr Here is where things are so far. IMAG1443 by Mark Inman, on Flickr Not much left in the box. OK, for those of you that don't know. I finnished reading the book "Vulcan 607" a few months ago, the story of the first Black Buck raid of the Falklands War. I was so inspired I am invisioning an airborne diorama of the 2nd last refueling bracket. On finishing the book I went out the next day and bought my first 1/72 kit in some thirty years - the Revell HP Victor. I have since been sourcing a 1/72 Avro Vulcan, one deal has fallen through (post payment :x ) . I have gained some XM607 decals from a local friend, and a "Dash-10" ecm pod from a fellow i-modeler (thanks David). Today I received my XH558 boxed Vulcan from Jumblies Models (hence this post ). I am now just waiting on my 2nd Victor to arrive from New Mexico (USA) next week (third Evil-bay auction), and then I have pre-assembly at Wideawake Airfield (my man cave) just sharing, as I am starting to love this project........
