  1. IMG_20240101_130657689_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr This is a 75mm figure from a series called Flesh of Gods thats been 3D printed. I usually frequent the Sci Fi section and work mostly with an airbrush, but I recently wanted to improve my brush work and have a go at some proper miniature figure painting, so for the first time ever I actually bought myself a couple of decent sable brushes and acrylic paints, watched some tutorials and decided to give it a go. My first go was on a much bigger project which I finished over Christmas, it was a 3D printed Guyver kit which I used as a bit of a guinea pig to have a go at things like edge highlighting and painting with light volumes. I even had a crack at doing some NMM chrome sky /earth effects on the shiny metal parts on his head. Now I'm jumping in with this miniature, I picked him because he doesn't have a lot of crazy details on for a first time and he has a decent amount of skin out with some well defined muscle tone I'm looking forward to painting. Anyway enough waffle, on with the model, first thing I had to do was a repair; it arrived with the sword snapped at the hilt which in all honesty wasn't much of a surprise considering its such a large one and yet has a pretty narrow hilt (that first pic was just a temporary fix). The place I got it from was really good about it, sent another and the same thing happened so I said not to worry and just superglued it but made it stronger by gluing him to his base and using some greenstuff where the sword meets it to wedge in place againts his hand. IMG_20240102_200853133 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240102_201209462 by Nick Frost, on Flickr With that sorted I used some double sided tape to stick him to a bit of carboard as a holder then I sprayed him with some rattlecan black primer before doing a zenithal effect with some white paint through my airbrush. IMG_20240103_190803479 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240103_211247690 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Started with my flesh basecoat of bugmans glow for the shadows, from there I mixed it 50/50 with my next colour which is Cadian Fleshtone which I painted over most of what I did leaving the bugmans glow where I want heavy shadows which you can just about see if you squint! haha IMG_20240104_200733383 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240105_195412606 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240105_195427550 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Thats my start point for the skin, so before I got any further I painted his eye, one of the things I picked up cheap was a magnifying led lamp which was such a big help for this! First I painted it with doombull brown, then I went in with some bone white with a little of the cadian fleshtone mixed in for the white. IMG_20240105_200014648 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240105_200502997 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I mixed a little blue in with some black and carefully put in the iris/pupil, which I then neatened up by painting more of the base colour over the top. IMG_20240105_201037580 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I moved on with the rest of the skin. Basically to simply explain it I have 3 colours all from citadel as my main skin tones, starting with bugmans glow as the base I'm moving through them using a 50/50 blend as steps in between each shade so my steps are:- Bugmans Glow 50/50 Bugmans glow & Cadian Fleshtone Cadian Fleshtone 50/50 Cadian Fleshtone & Kislev Flesh Kislev Flesh All this working in smaller and smaller areas so I'm basically creating the steps of a gradient blend, and I will also mix an extra bright highlight with some kislev flesh and white which will only go on the face, chest muscles and top of shoulder just to keep that as the brightest area, so here are the pics of that process (sorry of the lighting is a little off with my lamp blaring) IMG_20240105_201833646 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240105_201833646 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240105_203636461 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240105_203946183 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240106_112834238 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240106_112846109 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240106_113238244 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240106_115338484 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240106_115338484 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240106_115411022_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240106_161650258 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240106_193020254 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240106_193032083 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Really happy with how that turned out, I want to sort the hair but before that I need to do the eye patch as the strap goes through, so whilst I was doing some leather I decided to do his bracers and the straps over his chest. So much like the skin tone I started with a dark base of Rhinox Hide then with a 50/50 mix of that and some Mournfang brown added before going with straight mournfang brown to build up my highlight area, this time though I moved the brush around to stipple it on a bit to give the impression of texture. IMG_20240107_155847879 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240107_155907239 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240107_161133434 by Nick Frost, on Flickr The final step was to mix some red in with the mournfang brown to help highlight it and give that leathery wartmth, before making a bright highligh from the same colour with some white and orange as an extreme highligh which I used in very small areas where the light would catch. IMG_20240107_162548073 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240107_162555224 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240107_171208770 by Nick Frost, on Flickr With those bits of leather done I can finally get the hair sorted, which I want to be greying like he's an older barbarian, so started with a very dark almost black grey which I kept on the thin side to help it flow into the deep bits, before mixing up shades of grey using a little yellow to warm it slightly and again built my highlights from there mixing up a nearly white pale grey that I only used under his lip, on the moustache and the very front of his fringe. IMG_20240107_194308263 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240107_194315668 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240107_200000982 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240107_200037553 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240107_200719534 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And that's where I am with him, really happy with how its going I'm enjoying this a lot, its so different from my usual painting on models! Next up I'll start his leather belt and the fur Thanks for looking, more soon
