  1. The kit. Shelf space is a premium so for bigger subjects I usually go for 1/144. I paid a little bit more than that The kit has no interior and pretty low parts count so goes together pretty quickly. Will need a little sanding and filling. I’ll let the adhesive set overnight first.
  2. Just finished this Airfix 1:72 Boeing B-17G 37-993 of 91st Bomb Group, 324 Bomb Squadron Eighth Air Force based at RAF Bassingbourn in Early 45. I started building this as the B17 Texas Raiders had just crashed it may not be Texas Raider but its my little tribute to them. With this one having quite a high bomb tally I've gone for a slightly more worn look then my usual builds. Build itself was really nice. The only issue being around the ball turret where something was out and didnt allow the fuelages halves to meet cleanly or the turret to rotate. No real addons to this just some scratch build ammo chutes for the waist 50cals and some hydraulic tank/pipes in the cockpit to fill a hole. Theres some nice pics of 43-37993 in flight and crew HERE at the American Air Museum in Britain site. Now to my build, as always comments suggestions, questions and tips always welcome and encouraged. (image use small print so nobody complains:- You can download good quality copies of the images on our site for your own personal use, or use in a non-commercial context. 3. I've been thinking about doing a Revell B17 in a larger scale. The Memphis Belle kit seems ok .. I'm happy to not have all the interior detail Which though would be great to scratch build is going to be hidden this time, and for the money it's not a bad value kit. The kit comes with an alternative to build a ship called " Meat Hound". I've seen some stuff about this kit not being accurate enough to represent the Belle. I like to be different and would go for the alternative here.. as it has an amazing story behind it. Meat Hound was attacked by German fighters and all crew except the pilot jumped over Holland. the pilot made it back to England and crash landed at RAF Metfield in Suffolk. Now this is an airfield I often cycle to .. .. so the die Is almost cast ... so to speak. Ive done a search i n the forums but don't seem to find anyone who has done this kit as Meat Hound before.. £30 is a small amount to have a go at a 1:48 scale heavy I think. Anyone like me to do a kit review and then work in Progress to RFI if I buy this?
  4. Hey everyone I hope you all had a great Christmas and you all have an equally fab new year. I thought I'd show my meagre completed builds for 2017, there's only three so blink and you'll miss em! (there should be a forth my 1/32 Special Hobby Tempest II but unfortunately she has been consigned to the dark place, under my desk, never to be seen again......) My first finish for the year was a model I started 2 years ago the Hasagawa 1/48 Hawker Typhoon Mk 1b.... Next up was the Airfix 1/72 B17G finished as a RAF Mk III.. And finally my Tamiya 1/48 Mosquito.... ..And that my friends is that. Not much to show for 12 months work but at least its something I guess. In 2018 I will be starting my 1/32 B25 and Hawker Hurricane plus a couple of 1/48 scale builds I have in the stash. Cheers all and here's to 2018!! Iain
  5. Another kit is added to my Matchbox collection 2nd Patches was an Italy based olive drab painted B-17G, at some point or points in it's life various parts of this machine were replaced with parts from other aircraft giving it a part painted / unpainted livery. Nearly all the larger clear parts have been replaced on this model, but apart from that is pretty much as Matchbox intended with very little re-scribing or other work. Paints are Revell olive brown with Humbrol and Testors olive drabs, while the bare metal is alclad. To sum up, a fun build that I could of carried on messing about with for ever. The windows need a bit of a clean. Thanks for looking.
  6. Hi, I'm not new to modeling, but I'm new to modelling websites. It's so cool to see other modelers in the community. I've seen many group builds and I wanted to start my own. It is with The 8th Air Force and the planes that were in it. The planes that you can make is: 1. P-38 Lightning 2. P-47 Thunderbolt 3. P-51 Mustang 4. B-17 Flying Fortress 5. B-24 Liberator 6. A-20 Havoc If You want any other planes in the build just ask me. The due date is March 5th. I'm doing the Revell P-51 in Ms. Marilyn II colors. All brands are accepted, just it has to be 1/48 scale. Thanks, and have fun! -Oliver P.S. Yes that is a Gabe Newell Quote
  7. My next build is Revell's 1/72 B-17f, being built as 'Memphis Belle'. Woody37 did a great review of the kit here on BM (thanks Neil!) and that has some great sprue shots so please refer to that. My only sprue shot will be this: Still in the plastic bags. Perhaps a little intimidating but my last two (big) builds have been Valom short-run kits so I'm expecting Revell's German engineering and 'efficient' instructions (ve vill give ze orders!) to give me a bit of a rest (famous last words). Most people (including me when I bought it some time ago) consider this to be a big model, but my recent experiences have warped my perception somewhat - it's not big, it's just, er, close. Here's the B17 wing compared to my recently completed Bombay: So 'standard size' then. And it has locator pins and everything! I'm a bit concerned by the number of 'Marie Celeste' builds out there that start well but then just fizzle out. I shall, however, be ruthlessly plagiarising tips and warnings from: - robbo1234biking's part build WiP in June 2009 - Rickpadwick1801's completed build in May 2014 and - Andy Moore's current WiP - although it's a 'G' they share a lot of parts (naughty things) And of course I'll be trying to replicate Fozzy's interior from his amazing scratch build: Just kidding, of course, I won't be trying to do that, it's a 'G' too! And, of course, well beyond my relatively Newbie skills. So, I've read the threads, watched the film (last night) and done some 'research' on BM and the internet. I hope this WiP will be as 'educational and entertaining' as my last couple so, to quote 'Buffalo Joe', "Hold onto your hats boys!"**. And girls, obviously. And others. It's time to wash my parts, and then I'll rinse the sprues and get started*. * Dbl-E, score 1, fnaar fnaar ** If you haven't watched 'Ice Pilots' I recommend it. It's on YouTube and here's the Season 1 trailer. Six series to watch - go on, you know you want to!
  8. Here is my attempt at building a model of the wonderful Sally-B. The WIP can be found here. My aim was to take photo of the model using the same focal length that the following picture was taken with & then to photoshop the model onto this picture. here is the model sat on a table with a fan heater blowing the props.... And here is the final image hacked about using paintshop pro: And just for good measure, here are a few pics of the finished model. Most of the detail is on the inside & can be seen in the WIP. No clever tricks to hide the blemishes... I know she's a mess in places, but she'll look just fine hanging from the ceiling of my 'office'. thanks for looking
  9. This is my big build for 2014. I love going to see Sally B at Duxford and want to do a hyperscale model of her. I have decided to do a fictional diorama of her at a USAF base somewhere in the UK in 1944. I am using 2 Revell B17 kits to kit and shut into one aircraft. Sally B will be painted to represent the various colour schemes she has shown over the years, this will be done by having a khaki green front and rear fuselage with a metallic midsection and yellow tail. The decals are from kitworld. I have spent 18 months collecting all the kits and detailed elements for the kit. It is going to have a full Truedetail resin interior (including bomb bay) and weighted wheels, metal undercarriage and full Biged photoetch upgrade. Other item include the Tamiya refuelling set and USAF weapons tractor and trolly. I have also got a resin genrator and extra bomb trolly, finishing off with a follow me jeep and resin USAF bomber crew. This is going to be an epic and long build that will test all my skills and will at certain points be a steep learning curve....
