  1. I thought it might help to have a list of what work was needed to convert a 1/32 scale Tamiya F4 J to a UK machine. I did smile at Jennings suggestion earlier on that the best method was to jack up the model and insert new one underneath! Funny Jennings! Please comment, suggest methods of fixes and I will update the list as we go along. In particular feel free to offer to manufacture a conversion set or at least the cans - well we can live in hope. Also add any fixes required for errors on the Tamiya model - I recall a post about battle damage plates being reproduced off the machine they looked at and which obviously are not on other examples So here goes in no particular order 1 Enlarge the intakes. I read that the intakes were 20% wider to accommodate the RR Speys 2 Complete change of the burner cans 3 Add auxiliary engine intake doors on rear fuselage sides 4 Fuselage beneath engine bay deepened 5 Fuselage width increased by 6 inches 6 Nose wheel leg extension on FG.1 only 7 Nose wheel door carrier approach lights on FG.1 only 8 Catapult spools and hold back bar fitting on FG.1 only 9 Standard F4C nose gear FGR.2 only 10 RWR on fin top when in later service, fitted 1978-78 on 11 F4M ILS localizer/glide path vanes fitted either side of fin 12 Telescopic sight on port side of central canopy window some later service aircraft 13 Removal of the spurious Tamiya battle damage plates (where they are I do not know) 14 I assume a few cockpit changes! 15 Modify shape of V shaped Heat Panels in exhaust area I was directed to Frank Mitchells work here on LSP Part 1 http://www.largescaleplanes.com/articles/article.php?aid=211 Part 2 http://www.largescaleplanes.com/articles/article.php?aid=212 Part 3 http://www.largescaleplanes.com/articles/article.php?aid=68 Part 4 http://www.largescaleplanes.com/articles/JetAge/FrankMitchell/fgr4/fgr4.php I will edit/add/delete as phantom experts clarify and educate! I have no doubt that there are other modifications and that some of the above will be "disputed" or incorrect. The source was "The Phantom Story" by Thornborough and Davies. It would be great if anyone could comment and give photographs or other information to expand on the above as required. For example I read that not everyone agrees that the fuselage was widened to accommodate the fatter Spey engines. See for example Bill Clarks post yesterday on this. Even if it was 6 inches wider that translates into a scale size of just under 5 millimetres (did I get that right?). Is that liveable with perhaps or does the wider fuselage (assuming it is) make the model look better?
