  1. One of my older models, built during the pandemic at the end of 2020. Even though the registration is 10+03, the aircraft was actually the first of three A350-900s delivered from Airbus to Lufthansa Technik for VIP conversion. At the time of building the kit, the aircraft was not yet delivered to the Luftwaffe, hence no christian name. This is the only A350 in the 'old' livery also seen on the A340s and A320 family fleet, 10+01 and 10+02 have a revised livery with more modern titles and the winglets completely painted in Germanys national colours. I used the Revell A350-900 kit, decals from 8A Decs and added some fine metal mesh into the engine inlets. Since it was brand new at the time, I did not apply any weathering.
  2. In 2019 Zvezda is to release a 1/144th Airbus A350-1000 kit - ref. 7020 Source: Zvezda catalog 2019 V.P.
  3. I personally still dont like the look of the A350,esp. the nose section is imho one of the ugliest designs ever. But as I had flown on the CX A350-1000 back in 2019,it had to be added to my "I flew on it" collection. But I must admit, the flights were great on it,being not only very comfortable but also very quiet. The landings were so smooth,I didnt even notice the touchdowns. In these aspects, the A350 ranks among the best flying experiences of me,although they cant compare to the 747 flights, but as far as its Airbus related, the A350 was the best. The kit comes from Zvezda, and as one comes to expect from this manufacturer, the model is superbly designed and every part fits almost seamlessly. Puttying and sanding were almost inexistent with just the very long fuselage needed a little bit of filler in some places. The rest is basically falling together. It also has a nice and for that scale sufficiently detailed cockpit which can be seen through the very clear windscreen. The engines are very detailed and cleverly designed, which allows to paint the hot sections and the cowlings separately. Paints are Gunze white primer for the fuselage, clear coated with Gunze Premium gloss and Gunze Grey 315 for the wings and stabilizers. The cheatline was more difficult to find the right shade. On my research I came across Lifecolor WW2 Australian Airforce grey, but that was not available in my place. The only other option that was stated to be similar was the Gunze blue-grey,but in my opinion its a bit too much on the green side. I only realized it after I had sprayed the white around it.But depending on the light and angle you look at the model it differs a lot.I am still satisfied with the outcome. The decals are from PAS Decals and are nicely printed and easy to use. The windowframes for the cabin windows although are not usable as they are just thin black frames instead of silver. To solve this,I used the ones from the kits superb decal sheet and some from a 26decals Qatar A350-900 sheet that I had in my spares. All in all,a very nice and trublefree build all around and a highly recommended kit. Cheers Alex The stand provided presents the A350 nicely and so it can also be build with gear up. Here with "something else" to show the sheer size of that aircraft
  4. Airbus A350-900 Lufthansa new livery 1:144 Revell (03881) In service since 2015, the A350 is the newest of the Airbus family of wide bodied long haul airliners. The fuselage is built from carbon-fibre reinforced plastic, making it lighter, stronger, and easier to maintain than traditional aluminium bodied aircraft. It is one of the modern ultra fuel efficient machines, with ranges from 8,000 nautical miles up to 9,700 nm depending upon version. Sectors over 20 hours have been introduced by Singapore Airlines flying to the west coast of America The first time I saw one I was surprised at how big it was, somehow photographs make it look a lot smaller. It is in fact very similar in size to the Boeing 777 and 787, with which is competes. With nearly 1,000 on order it looks like it will be around for many years yet. This is not a new kit, but a re-boxing of the original released in 2013, updated with the the latest Lufthansa markings. Moulded in white plastic it features lightly engraved detail, free from flash or sink marks. It comes in a tightly packed box, there are so many parts that in fact I had trouble packing it all back in once I had done the review photographs. This is no 'small kit rattling around in a big box', you certainly get your money's worth. The two fuselage halves are almost as long as the box, and feature the same belly cut out in the wing area that will be familiar to builders of Revells' other wide bodied airliners. All windows are cut out with a separate sprue holding strips of glazing. The wings are very nicely moulded with the upward curved tips, and recesses for the separate flap tracks. The two part tailplanes are also on the wing sprues. Having already built the earlier release of this kit, I can confirm that the fit of the wing to the fuselage is perfect. So much so that I have never glued them on to my model, as they lock in securely, and can be removed for storage/transportation. Next up is the previously mentioned 'belly plate', the flap track halves, undercarriage legs, and parts for the stand. The belly plate is a very good fit, and nowhere near as troublesome as on some of the other kits with this feature. Detailing on the undercarriage legs is sharp, all you really need to do is add some of the hydraulic lines from fine wire. Undercarriage doors, nacelle halves, and a complete cockpit feature on the next sprue. I always like it when a cockpit interior is included as it saves me scratchbuilding one. It is worth taking time over painting this as it can be seen through those large cockpit windows. The only thing I might add would be a couple of 'N' gauge figures painted up as crew. The engines are real works of art, the mouldings for the fan blades are amazing. A front and back set join together to form a complete fan disk. Again, having built this kit I can say that it is possible to rotate the fans in the completed and painted engine by gently blowing on them. The base of the stand, some undercarriage parts, and the wheels are all on the final sprue. The hub/tyre interface is neatly defined, which is a great help when painting them. I usually do hubs first, and then brush paint tyres with Humbrol 67 Panzer grey. (Tip - Tyres are almost always dark grey rather than black. And in any case in 1:144 the 'scale effect' of pure black is way too harsh). The decals are designed by DACO which is a sure sign of quality, and beautifully printed with a full range of stencils and walkways. There are optional solid windows if you choose to paint over all the glazing, or silver frames if you like to keep them clear. My only reservation is personal, and that is that I find the current Lufthansa livery a bit lifeless and bland. It is not a problem as there are several aftermarket decal sheets covering other operators of the A350. Of course, if you like the new look Lufthansa, then this sheet will do a superb job of re-creating it on your model. Conclusion. This is one of the best airliner kits available, taking advantage of the latest moulding techniques to produce a model with incredibly good fit, and those amazing engines. It is also quite big, dwarfing something like an A320, and even making a 747 look average. The ease with which it can be built, and the simplicity of the livery would make it a suitable kit the beginner, while the sheer quality of it will appeal to the more serious modeller. I love it, and have already purchased another. Highly Recommended Revell model kits are available from all good toy and model retailers. For further information visit Footnote: My build of a previous release of this kit, using aftermarket 'Thai' decals from 26Decals. See what I mean about how big it is alongside a 747? And the wing fit is so good, they can be popped out for storage.
  5. I present the Revell A350 in the cheerful “Expo 2019” livery carried by Air China’s B-1083 to promote the International Horticultural Exhibition in Beijing. I know that opinion is divided about the A350’s looks but beauty is in the eye of the beholder and personally I like its odd, quirky appearance. The superb Revell kit really does it justice. The kit was a straightforward and enjoyable build. Apart from a BraZ satcom fairing and a few small details the model is OOB. I was particularly taken with the engines and undercarriage which are both masterpieces of miniature plastic engineering. Although it looks complicated the undercarriage is actually easy to assemble, much easier than the Revell A330/340, but it’s essential to follow the instructions carefully and, in particular, put the brake discs on the right way round. (Don’t ask…) White paint is Halfords and the standard Airbus Grey on the engines is Holts HL Grey 01. Metallics are by Tamiya and Revell. I’ve never seen an authoritative match for Airbus Matterhorn White and after a bit of experimentation I used Mr Color 107 Character White for the wings, tailplanes and pylons. It looked OK indoors but when I took the model outside for the photographs it obviously isn’t grey enough so the search for the perfect Matterhorn White will have to continue. Livery decals are by TwoSix with Authentic Airliners windows. Ray has done a fantastic job with the decals which virtually fell into place on the model apart from a tiny bit of trimming round the number 2 doors. The only minor issue is that the winglet logos are a fraction too big (particularly noticeable on the inner faces) but nothing I can’t live with. Thanks for looking and thanks also to @Duncan B who supplied the kit. As always constructive criticism is welcome. Dave G One problem with the design of the kit is that you must install the nose wheel leg at an early stage, there is no way round it. Here's a tip to protect it using an expanded foam "bead" cut in half. The idea isn't mine - I pinched it from somebody on here, possibly Turbofan. Obviously it won't protect against dropping the model on the floor but it should save the leg from routine knocks.
  6. Revell A350-900 1/144 'Skyteam' Vietnam Airlines On first impressions I thought this was quite an ugly aircraft but having seen it recently at Miami airport in Qatar airways colours I was quite surprised to see how elegant an aircraft it actually is. It's size is also quite deceiving especially in comparison to similar widebodies. Anyway I decided to buy the kit by Revell. It's a typical Revell kit, a lot cruder than zvezda with quite a lot of excess plastic clinging to numerous parts but nevertheless nicely detailed. One wing is warped which is nice so I've had to deal with that before i do anything by heating the plastic and laying some weight on it overnight. The kit comes with Lufthansa colours which i noted that all Lufthansa a350s have a SATCOM (or wifi not sure) antenna but the kit does not come with one Braz sell a few antenna's but knowing which one is a bit of a nightmare. Braz sell the 'SatCom CNA-2102 Antenna' for widebody airliners but it doesn't look right on reference shots of the A350. Does anyone know which type of antenna the A350 uses?? (placed near the tail) the obvious choice would be to make one but I rather find out if Braz do one for the sake of perfection. Progress and pics to follow.....
  7. Airbus A350 Thai Airways. 1:144 Revel kit with 26 Decals. I bought this kit when it first came out a few years ago, in the prototype scheme. I didn't much fancy doing that, so waited for some aftermarket producers to come out with some alternatives. Having a liking for all things Thai, I bought these decals from Two Six when they came out. I started the model a year ago, and more or less finished it by June of last year. It has been sitting on the workbench ever since, waiting for the aerials to be fitted. I'm having a bit of a purge of 'nearly finished' models on the bench, and this is the first one to be completed. The kit itself is excellent, the fit is amazing, one of the best I've ever worked on. The engine fans actually rotate if you blow on them. I haven't even glued the wings on, they push fit in and stay in place so well, that it gives me the option to detach them for storage. Now, I've got a couple of Airfix lightnings, a Wingnut Wings Albatros, an Eduard Pfalz, an Airfix DC-3, an Authentic Airliners 707, and two Group build 737's to be getting on with before the bench is clear. Anyway, after a long delay, this one is at last complete. I hope you like it. A couple of 'With something else' shots. It it a huge aeroplane, much bigger than I realised. Two regularly seen at Suvarnabhumi airport, teh A350 and an A320 of Bangkok Air Pretty much the same size as a 747, it's only slightly smaller; And the fit is so good I've left the wings detachable for storage; Thanks for looking, John
  8. Let me just start with a warning : There's no cheatline ! Now we've got that out of the way..... ....Ethiopian Airlines are due to take delivery of their first Airbus A350 next month but I couldn't wait that long. I finished off Revell's A350 with a mixture of F-dcal markings (FD144-684) and the kit's stencils : The standard 4x4 walkaround : Of course, the "with something else" pic just had to be with one of the A350's predecessors : I'm afraid I really struggled with this kit and it took far too long to complete. (Having said that, I managed to drag mine over the finish line before Trojan Thunder did (Come on Ray ! We're still waiting to see your A350 in Finnair markings ! )) Anyway, it's back to the bench now to continue work on yet another jet with no cheatline ! (This one has a story to it and a bit of a twist with the presentation, so stay tuned) Thanks for looking. mike
  9. Well, it's a new year, so why not a new WIP? I wasn't initially going to do this thread, so I've already made some progress. I started by painting the inside of the fuselage matt black and fitting the clear window parts. Following this the main and nose gear bays and the flightdeck were painted and installed. After joining the fuselage halves, I fitted the belly plate and the wings. The fit has been very good so far - only two small patches of filler have been needed. A350 by Caution Wake Turbulence, on Flickr The windscreen is very slightly under-sized, but after painting the edge with black paint, I able to make a good join using some microscale crystal clear. I cut the mask using the windscreen from a second kit. A350 Nose by Caution Wake Turbulence, on Flickr I've masked the cabin windows with Microscale Micro Mask, applied using a short length of 0.5mm styrene rod mounted in my pin vice, which seemed to work better than a cocktail stick. A350 Windows by Caution Wake Turbulence, on Flickr It's a bit of a pain having to fit the nose gear at the beginning, but it hasn't broken off.....yet! With some thought, you could probably modify it to fit at the end. A350 Nose Gear by Caution Wake Turbulence, on Flickr It took a little bit of fettling to match the curvature of the fuselage and the belly plate, but with a little sanding and some rescribing, I'm quite pleased with the result. A350 Belly by Caution Wake Turbulence, on Flickr I decided to add a little detail to the main gear.... A350 Main Gear by Caution Wake Turbulence, on Flickr I've been experimenting with various shades of Alclad on the engines.... More or less successfully. There are a couple of sink marks on the engine cowling to be filled. A350 Engine by Caution Wake Turbulence, on Flickr I'm reasonably pleased with the engine fans, although the blade spacing is a bit uneven. Trent XWB Fan by Caution Wake Turbulence, on Flickr As ever, Revell's painting instructions seem to have only a loose relationship with reality... I have to say, despite some people's misgivings, the A350 is really growing on me! Thinking about doing a second in Virgin colours if my A330 decals will fit. More as small people permit..... Happy New Year, Andrew
