  1. Hi chaps, I wonder if someone here could clear up some confusion I’m having regarding the Xtracolor Mica paints. I’ve searched around but haven’t found any definitive answers. Xtracolor produce two Mica topcoats; X368 Mica 1 and X369 Mica 2. In the description of X368 Mica 1 is “acrylic base”. Does this mean that it is an acrylic paint or does it mean it is formulated to go on top of an acrylic base? Is it safe to put over an enamel base? I’m presuming X369 Mica 2 is a standard enamel paint and can be thinned with enamel thinners but what about thinning X368 Mica 1? And finally, is there a difference in the final tone or pearlescent finish between Mica 1 and Mica 2? I note from Xtracolor instructions that putting a topcoat of Mica 1 over X367 Virgin Atlantic Grey gives the pearlescent finish for Virgin while putting Mica 2 over X367 gives the Northwest Airlines pearlescent finish. Does that indicate that there a difference? Sorry for all the questions but I’d really appreciate any insight on these Mica topcoats from your experience as I’m trying to figure out which one to use.   2. Good morning, I have put in an order from hannants and acquired some of their Xtracolor range. Apart from the obcenely long drying time, does anyone happen to have any advice regarding brush painting with these? Cheers, Ash
  3. Hi all. My most recent project has come to an end. Minicrafts little 737 kit is rather simple, but also a joy to build. Added antennas, and beacon lights. Decals are from Max decals. Paint from Xtracolor (Maersk blue) Humbrol ("Boeing grey", corroguard, nose) and Alclad for leading edges of wings and vertical/horizontonal stabilisors. Here goes: Cheers Robin
  4. Hey, I am a new guy in modelling and I´m asking myself for a long time some questions. 1. I am searching for a shop selling Xtracolor paints, I checked Hannants, Aviation Mega Store, Martola and Falsh-aviation. 2. Is there any way to get BA Blue X322, KLM Light Blue X302, Korean AIr Blue X308, Airbus Industrie Grey X359, MICA 1 X368, Virigin Atlantic Grey X367, Boeing Grey X301 and Corrogard X331? 3. When there aren´t a way, please let me know If there are any alternatives. - Greetings from Germany L.B.
  5. Fellow Modellers, Finally had some time to photograph the first finished example of a series Westlands Wessex helicopters.. As extras are added the Cobra cockpit and interior. Almost completely empty with just a few seats . Thanks to Mr. Evans from Whirlybird I was able to add the extra long range fuel tank to the port side. This little gem adds so much importance to the model. It will be accompanied in a diorama by Bedford Tactical Refueller and some figurines. Excellent decals from L Decals Studio and the box decals from Italeri. The FOD cover is constructed from MiliPut. RBF tags are from Eduard. Paints as usual from the Xtra Color range. It represents XS484, 771, RNAS Culdrose 1984. I would like to thank all the forum modellers that contributed to answer all my questions.   7. History From 1954 until 1964, the Royal Netherlands Naval Air Arm (MLD) operated three Sikorsky helicopters. Besides their registration numbers, also names were painted on one side of the clam door (Jezebel-Salome-Cleopatra). Assigned to either the Naval Air Station “Valkenburg” (search and rescue), or the aircraft carrier “Karel Doorman” for plane guard duties during launch and recovery operations. It has to be mentioned that they did save a large number of persons and pilots from drowning in all types of weather conditions. Being single engined and slightly under powered, they were unreliable. From the three helicopters, two crashed and one made it to the aviation museum. It was here that I saw the S-55 for the first time. I decided to build one in scale. Second hand I found the mentioned Revell kit many years ago on the shelf of a gas station in a little village for the price of one pound fourthy. The Kit According to the mold, it was originally produced in 1959 (USA). It had decals from Belgium Sabena and the RNLN. I completed the whole construction almost straight from the box. I used the Waldron punch and die set, together with Evergreen to slightly update the cockpit. For sound proofing the cabin and the area directly behind the pilots, I used thin foam. This you can find in the supermarket. When you order sliced Dutch cheese it gets packed on this material. It has (sometimes) already the punctured sound proof structure on it. Airbrushed with xtra colour medium grey and sky. Decals from the box were applied with the help of set and sol. The whole model was finished off with a thin layer of Glitsa parquet varnish. (70% methylated spirit and 30% Glitsa.) This prevents the decals from discolouring. The showcase is manufactured by ERTL and the street is from Evergreen.   8. Dear Wessex Specialists, My last question was in regards to the yellow rotor blade on the SAR Wessex. In reading the total result of my question (3 pages), I have come to the conclusion that BM is the best site for starting a serious discussion. I was amazed at the knowledge among the members. Thanks for the effort you all put in there. This knowledge I will use, if questioned by modelers who think they know it all! This time, I continue with the colors of the airframes in general. In particular the RED on the RN frames and the YELLOW on the RAF frames. To start with the rescue yellow, does Xtracolor RAF Rescue Yellow represent the right color yellow, or are we differing of opinions on this matter? Or even do we mix to get the right yellow result? Continuing to the Yellow and Red on the RN Wessex: The (Golden) Yellow on the HAS 1 and HAS 3 must be a mix of colors. It is a very warm Yellow to look at. Any suggestions to get the right color on this matter? The Red on the nose and middle fuselage, would Xtracolor Red Insignia compare, or is there something better on the market?
