  1. Special Hobby is to reissue its 1/72nd Wirraway (link) in March 2023 - ref. SH72473 - Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (CAC) CA-9 Wirraway. Source: https://www.specialhobby.net/2023/02/sh72473-cac-ca-9-wirraway-172.html Box art from Standa Hájek. V.P.
  2. Hi If North American would not designed Mustang, the Harvard/Texan family will be perhaps the best achievements of this company from WWII. OK, perhaps Mitchell - but forgot for moment about this . The story starts with fixed u/c NA 57 . My is done from Azur kit, drawer decals represents markings from French Ecole de Pilotage (Flying School) No 1 at Etampes in April 1940.. Profile and photo of this machine was published in book by B.Belcarz - "Polskie lotnictwo we Francji" ("Polish aviation in France"), Stratus publisher, 2002. Next in my incomplete set of the whole family is Harvard Mk II b, FX 215, in markings of No 16 (Polish) FTS RAF, Newton UK. Kit by Academy, decals by Techmod. Australian company Commonwealth based on Harvard Mk I the CA-1 Wirraway - multi purpose machine which served also as "emergency fighter". On 12 December 1941, Pilot Officer J. S. Archer of 24 Squadron RAAF shot down a Zero/Zeka fighter flying Wirraway. This is my attempt of construction this machine (kit by MPM): Wirraway was then developed to CA 13 Boomerang - mine is made 30 years ago from Airfix kit: For the end the whole family: Comments welcome Regards Jerzy-Wojtek P>S> from 2021 My Harvard family increased by NA 50 I converted her from new Special Hobby Harvard in RAF kit. The longer canopy for RAF Harvard left after this build so I corrected mine old RAF Harvard installing extended canpy: And the extended family Regards J-W
  3. A little late to the party, but I am starting on my Special Hobby Wirraway. The Wirraway was one of the many variants of the Harvard/Texan theme in this case the NA33 that was licence built by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation who modified the type in terms of its armament. When the type was ordered, there was some argument over ordering an American type, but given the need to rapidly expand Australian defence capability, there was little choice. It was to be used as a trainer and General Purpose type and survived in the former role until 1959. As a general purpose aircraft it was caught up in the disasters surrounding the Japanese attack in Malaya and the South West Pacific, but saw the war out in an army cooperation role, often sharing the duty in mixed squadrons with Boomerangs. The Special Hobby kit consists of grey injection moulded parts with no location pins except for the tailplanes and some vague indications for the cockpit parts. There is an injection moulded canopy and landing lights and a resin engine and cowling. Decals are for four aircraft including one which may be in the Sea colours used by the RAAF as it was used for coastal patrols. The instructions mention this, but give no sources. I fancy this scheme as a Boomerang is also planned for this Group build. First off will be the interior, that looks a bit fiddly with a bit of vagueness around the instructions as to what goes where.
  4. Special Hobby 1/72 CAC CA-9 Wirraway Wirraway is an Australian variant of the NA-16. Over 700 were built and it was used mainly as a trainer but also as a fighter. Kit: Special Hobby CAC CA-9 Wirraway (SH72194) Scale: 1/72 Paints: Vallejo Model Air, Vallejo Metal Colour, Hataka Red Line Weathering: Flory Models Wash, Tamiya & Ammo Mig weathering products Quite the trouble free build, done in a week. Camo colours were based on info on Special Hobby's instructions that this specific airframe could have been painted in sea camouglage - but apparently that is outdated info. So should have been your normal RAAF green and brown camo. Done for Texan/Hardvard STGB WIP:
  5. CAC CA-9 Wirraway 1:48 Special Hobby The CAC Wirraway was a trainer aircraft developed by the Australian Commonwealth Aircraft Company. It was based on the North American NA-16, a design which was itself developed into the T-6 Texan. CAC altered the basic design of the NA-16 by adding a second forward firing machine gun and strengthening the wings to enable the aircraft to perform dive bombing missions. A total of 755 Wirraways were built by the time production ended and the design also served as the basis for the Boomerang emergency fighter. Aside from fulfilling its role as a trainer aircraft, the Wirraway was also pressed into service as a stop-gap fighter and ground-attack aircraft during the early phases of engagement between Japanese and Australian forces. The type's only air combat victory occurred in January 1942, when Pilot Officer J.S. Archer dived on a Zero flying below him and shot it down. The Kit This is a re-release of the 2009 kit form Special Hobby. There are two sprues of short run plastic, a bag of resin parts, clear sprue, small sheet of photo-etch; and instrument panel film. Construction starts with the cockpit, The instrument panel s built up from plastic and PE parts with the film for the instruments being sandwiched in between. The PE seatbelts are then added to the seats. The cockpit is built up from the tubular side parts and the base. Mounts for the seats are added then the seats themselves. Other cockpit parts and framing bars are also added. Once complete this can be mounted inside the fuselage halves and the lower fuselage parts can be added. The engine mount can be added at the front and the front coaming with the machine guns can be added to the top front fuselage. Once the main fuselage is complete the wings can be added. These are a conventional single lower wing with upper left & right wings to add. The wheel wells must be added in before the wings are closed up. The resin engine is added to the front an the engine cowls closed up around it. The tail planes can now be added. The main and tail wheels and their mounting legs are added along with the undercarriage doors. The underside air filter is also added. To finish up the pitot tube, antenna mast, landing lights, propeller and canopy are added. Decals Decals are from Aviprint and should pose no problems. Markings are provided for 3 examples; A20-444/ NV-J, 23 Sqn RAAF, Lowood AFB, Queensland 1943. A20-496 / TM, 23 Sqn RAAF, Lowood AFB, Queensland 1943. A20-572 / QE-H, 4 Sqn RAAF, Port Moresby, New Guinea 1942-43. Conclusion It is good to see this kit of an important Australian type re-released. Recommended. Review sample courtesy of
  6. Hi all, Some of you may have followed a thread previously on the Hurricane my grandfather flew in Burma for 11 RAF squadron. Now that that build is done and dusted i am onto the next of the "planes my grandfather flew" series which is a CAC Wirraway he flew in Deniliquin, NSW, Australia at 7 SFTU. I have got some photos from his own album as well as others from the net i have found of planes i know he flew. Any information you could provide on what colour scheme these planes would most likely have been painted would be great... Here are the two photos i have from his album... Here are some others from the net of planes i know he flew (from his logbook)... Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated! Cheers Sandy
  7. Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (CAC) Wirraway. Pics thanks to Daniel Cox. Daniel would like to point out that since this aircraft is a flying "warbird" not all of its details are prototypical to how it was when manufactured during the Second World War.
