Time to start a second build. This is one I've had my eye on for a while - my only ever helicopter flight was in an S-61N - and I decided to buy myself the kit for my birthday last month. So here we go. First up, here's everything you get in the box: Quite a lot of nicely cast resin, a nice looking PE fret, plastic card for the floor, and decals. This is the KLM boxing, but I've also bought Lima November decals for Air Greenland in a rather striking red and yellow scheme. I've made a start - cleaning up the fuselage parts and opening up the windows and doors. Not quite finished cleaning up the window apertures yet. I have to say I'm finding this a little daunting - by far the most complex resin kit I've built - but I think I'll be fine. cheers Julian

This is my first entry for this group build. The English Electric P1A was designed as a transonic research aircraft, with possible development into a fighter. It first flew in 1954 powered by Sapphire engines and was the first British aircraft to exceed the speed of sound in level flight. The wings and tail married to a largely new fuselage with Avon engines formed the basis of the Lightning. Not the most elegant looking aeroplane, but one of the most distinctive. I was eight when I first saw a Lightning, on holiday in Norfolk in 1961 when one went supersonic over the sea off Caistor. The kit is the Whirlykits resin model from 2015. It is all resin with a little bit of PE and vacform canopy. It comes with decals and parts for both WG760 and WG763. New wings and a belly tank being applicable for 763 at a later stage in its life. Grey resin is used for most parts, with a hard black resin for the undercarriage legs. The fuselage comes in two halves like an injection moulded kit, which will make the whole thing a bit lighter. The two books above will be primary references. The Datafile has quite a few photos of both P1As. First job will ve to remove the parts from the casting blocks and webs.- 40 replies

With all the talk of the new Airfix Lightning releases and the suitability to convert the new F2A to other variants, I thought I'd take an easier route and build this ex-Maintrack Models (now Whirlykits) resin F3 of Treble One Squadron. I've built this kit in the markings of one based at RAF Wattisham, Suffolk, in 1965. I was inspired at the RAF Leuchars airshow when I saw a Lightning in the static in these colours. It's just a shame it didn't fire up the Avons and disappear vertically into the blue above! This is nicely moulded resin kit, with white metal undercarriage and ejector seat. I used the Whirlykits refuelling probe as this wasn't provided, and an Xtradecal sheet for the markings. Humbrol metalcote was used for the dull aluminium airframe, with various panels picked out in other silvers. My favourite aircraft in my favourite squadron colours. Rob
