  1. Gosh this one has come up already!!!! Ok This is actually a double build for me, one aircraft but for 2 builds, this one “in the Navy” and for my own SIG VF-31 Tomcatters builds. So the model is Hasegawa’s 1/48th F/A-18E model. It looks to be quite an impressive model and by all accounts a nice one to build…..not that I trust reviewers at all!!! She’ll sort of be OOB build but with just a few essentials, a new cockpit as the kit one is a bit basic...... ….some replacement exhausts with much better detailing, and new wheels for the same reason…... ….and finally, as the actually aircraft is covered with all sorts of grills and meshes some super fine new ones. These meshes from A.M.U.R. Reaver are super fine and incredibly thin so will be interested to see how they go as I have a couple of sets for my F-14A. And finally, the scheme, as mentioned she be done as a CAG aircraft from VFA-31 Tomcatters. This will be the 2nd aircraft in my Tomcatters collection (in the queue are an F-14A, F-4J, F-4B, F3H-2M Demon, F2H-3 Banshee (waiting for this one to be released), and F9F-2 Panther…..for now but another F-14D may show up, all in 1/48th). As time and appropriate GB’s come along I’ll gradually start building them. Not a 100% straightforward build but it should me a smooth one with luck. The real work will be getting the paint work right, they're not quite as dirty as the F-14's (?) but I still will need to get the patchy finish right. But first i have to finish my Combat boat first before I'll start this one, plus I don’t have another GB then until June, so with luck she’ll be done by then.
  2. Hey all, A quick post of these two lovely little models I had a lot of fun building Trumpeter's 1/144th F-14D and Revell's 1/144th F-18D. Trumpeter's 1/144th kits are an absolute blast to build- low part count, perfect fit, excellent level of detail for the scale, and stress free. The perfect antidote for taking a refreshing break from your other high maintanence builds. I used the lo-vis Tomcatters scheme from the F-14D kit on the F-18D, despite the VF-31 not having the Hornet (they currently have the F/A-18E). Also for the eagle-eyes, the wing-tip rails are not accurate on the F-18 as I broke the original off. Painted using Vallejo Model Air, and weathered with oils.
  3. Good Morning everyone I had this Hasegawa Tomcat with the livery of the VF-41 (Fast Eagle 107 - Fujimi decal for Su-22 killer) made in 2001-2002 , ruined by the matt coat then abandoned to its fate .. A couple of years ago I decided to remove the paint and repaint it better. For a period I continued the restoration of this tomcat in parallel with the construction of another one In these days of prohibition to leave the house I finally managed to finish the work
  4. Since i was a child, when i saw on an italian modeling magazine an article about the Tomcat in VF-31 colors, i dreamed about having it in my collection. It was 1997 or so. Now, after 22 years and lot of failure, i can put a red tailed Cat in my "showroom". It's not the perfect model, but i'm very happy! Tamiya kit with some resin bits from Quickboost (ladder steps, beaver tails, tail plates), Def Model (wheels), and Eduard (seat). Decals are a mix from Haseagawa and kits decals (insgina and stencils). Hope you like it! ciao Ale
  5. I had lot of fun building the Tamiya's Cat in 48th scale, so... i made my decision: i will build another Tamiya's Cat! This time i will build a colorful VF-31 bird with the iconic "Felix the Cat" carrying a bomb. This is one of my favourite livery on a Tomcat. (just for discussione purpose) The box Decals came from an unbuilt hasegawa kit I ordered some goodies to upgrade my Tomcat, others (wheels, beaver tails and CHIN pod) are on the way to my lab: I hope to start working on it soon, so stay tuned ciao Ale
  6. Here she is! VF-31's '110', BuNo 519618 as she was at the beginning of OIF in 2003. I used the Hobby Boss 1/48 F-14D, TwoBobs 'Felix in the Fight' decals, Humbrol enamels, W&D Studio pitot and AOA probe, Eduard canopy mask (Godsend!) and a really cheap airbrush. My aspiration was to use as little AM as possible to show what a great kit this is, in my opinion it is superb. It has one or two idiosyncrasies, but still offers a superb amount of value and is a great fitting kit which allows you to make a great looking 'Cat out of the box. I chose not to fill all the rivets, as I don't mid them. I added small touches here and there to improve the kit, but all was done using what's in the modelling box (wire etc). Build thread is HERE
