  1. Hobby Boss is to release a new tool 1/48th Lockheed U-2R Dragon Lady kit in 2015/2016 - ref.81740 Source: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234972796-hobbyboss-148-for-2015/?p=1828290 V.P.
  2. Hi all, With the Airfix Me-410 on hold whilst I wait for a delivery, I thought I'd crack open a quick, small project of an aircraft I love. Living very close to RAF Fairford, I've seen plenty of the current U-2S airframes fly in and out and so finally I'm building one - albeit, the earliest version. HobbyBoss released their 1:72 U-2A in 2021 with the U-2C following in 2022. The cockpit is straight forward with a fairly detailed multi-part ejection seat, however, I did add some left over Eduard SuperFabric seatbelts. They may not be 100% accurate but I plan on closing the cockpit and so very little will be seen from the inside. For this reason, I also wasn't too bothered by the lack of cockpit side wall decals. You get a main instrument panel decal, albeit basic, but nothing for the sides. Again, it will be closed up and not seen. All sub assemblies I could possibly do were carried out on the fuselage halves. This included the very good fitting engine intakes, closing the speed brakes and inserting the wheel wells. None were painted at this time apart from primer to help future processes. That's all for now, I'll do another update soon.
  3. Hi all, The HobbyBoss 1:72 U-2A is complete! This was a nice quick, mojo boosting build that has come out a treat. The build itself was simple with little issues. I liked the build so much, I went and purchased the U-2C at a recent model show to put alongside it one day. The kit was finished in The Scale Modellers Supply 'Metallic Super Silver' and clear coated with Alclad Aqua Gloss to keep the shine. The decals went down beautifully with no issues, including the massive wing walk way decals, conforming to all details perfectly. I fully recommend this kit to any skill of modeller of this very unique aircraft. Like the Me-410, if you'd like to see more images, let me know and I can post more in the future. See you all again soon! Long live the U-2!
  4. This will be the first of a two part* build of high altitude reconnaissance/research planes. The U-2 must be one of the more famous reconnaissance aircraft in aviation history. This being the C version which was flown by amongst others Francis Gary Powers when shot down near Sverdlovsk in what was then the USSR/SSSR in 1960. I haven't been able to work out the difference of the C and F versions (F being shot down during the Cuban Missile Crisis). The model is made by HobbyBoss slightly upgraded from the 2021 new tool release of the 1/72 U-2A (according to Scalemates: https://www.scalemates.com/kits/hobbyboss-87271-u-2c-dragon-lady--1443513 ), the most obvious variation being the under wing pods for fuel. Searching on the forum, I couldn't obviously spot another build/completed thread. If i've missed one please let me know - I'm looking for ideas! After the delivery man had dropped it off. Opening the box, the 4 grey plastic sprues look clean (the three translucent sprues yet to be opened). Maybe even too clean. There is no detail on the instrument panels, and only the vertical instrument panel (part 7 on the upper sprue below, decal no28) has decals as far as I can tell from the guide, so the side panels of the cockpit (sprue beneath part 7 between part 8 and the wing) have no plastic or decal detail...For a 2020's new model (according to scalemates) I'm quite shocked. A similar story with the 4 part seat. The kit is not inexpensive c.40USD/30GBP. To counter the lack of detail, I've bought Eduards PE kit and masks - at least little sanding will be needed! Note the decals spelt HobbyBoos which amused me if nothing else - they aren't yet open. The paint scheme - one double sided A4 sheet - shows 3 US versions (2 airforce and 1 CIA) and no paint scheme but what appears to be Taiwanese decals albeit cut into 4? *Part two hopefully happening before the turn of the century but no promises can be made. But it does sort of depend on my ability to complete the numerous deck guns of a Japanese battleship, also under construction. But an aircraft seemed a nice distraction, and potentially a way to try a few technical skills out without it messing up a 1/350 battleship if it goes wrong.
  5. HobbyBoss is to release in late July 2021 a 1/72nd Lockheed U-2A Dragon Lady kit - ref. 87270 Source: http://www.hobbyboss.com/index.php?g=home&m=article&a=show&id=185&l=en 3D render+box art V.P.
  6. Scale confirmed: 1/48th Seen in the AFV-Club Facebook. Definitely a Lockheed U-2 or TR-1 outrigger wheel 3D render. Considering it's AFV-Club - a Taiwanese company - , I’ll bet it will be the U-2C most commonly used by the RoCAF Black Cat Sqn (link). Cross my fingers for a new tool 1/48th Dragon Lady kit... But I fear she'll be in 1/144th scale. To be followed. Source: https://www.facebook.com/AFVCLUB.TW/photos/a.1888884937823683/1894502393928604/?type=3&theater V.P.
  7. I saw Bridge of Spies a few weeks ago and quite enjoyed the film. The U-2 sequences where very good, dramatic license aside, and it wasn't long before I had checked out a few books from the library on Lockheed's Skunk Works and the U-2. The next step was to see what kits were available. I was somewhat disappointed to discover that there were no kits currently in production and unless I could find something on eBay, I was out of luck. Well, as luck would have it, soon after I started looking one or two popped up on eBay UK. The one I liked had a low starting price so I put a bid in and waited. Only one other bidder joined in but didn't seem to want it as much as I did so I won the auction. The box was a little worse for wear and many of the parts had broken off the sprue tree but it was all there. It is an old kit, however, and not at all cutting edge but, based on drawings I have since acquired, I think the general overall shape is good and it just cries out for a little scratch building and super detailing. Which I am more than happy to get stuck into now that I'm giving the Camel a bit of a rest. I've started on the cockpit and will post a couple of photos tomorrow. Meanwhile: pic in a minute.
  8. Another late "report" on a kit already started. This is my 3rd time building this kit, having previously built the 2-seat U-2D back in the 1980s, and the U-2A after the kit was reissued in the noughties. It was only then the parts for the U-2C were included by Airfix, although they were very likely tooled at the same time as the rest of the kit, and were included in other boxings as far back as 1984 by MPC, whose stamp is on the mold. This was just a year after Airfix first issued the kit. Note the erroneous reference to the U-2B on the original Airfix cover, This should have been the U-2A. Contents. As I planned on building the NASA U-2C, I was able to leave this decal sheet untouched, and use the spare NASA section from the last time I built this kit. From checking instructions for other kits (notably Monogram), I'm not sure the cockpit should be black, but I discovered this too late, and you can't see much anyway when it's closed up. No nose weight is required, which speeds things up a bit. The engine intakes I painted in mid-grey, departing from the Airfix silver. The wheel wells, doors and undercarriage struts were also supposed to be silver, but I painted these white. The wings (slipper tanks already added) are best attached one at a time, each being left to set for a long time, preferably overnight, while resting in a downward position - some antique furniture proved very useful for this, I had to use some plastic card as shims to improve the fit between wings and fuselage, as this was nowhere near as good as it needed to be. The ugly sink marks on the top wings - directly above the attachment points for the stands and detachable struts - are clearly visible here, and took an amount of cleaning up. The fairing behind the cockpit was not a great fit either, and I messed it up sufficiently that I sought out the spare from the U-2D kit I'd built all those years ago, The discoloured plastic made it easy to find in the spares box. The bulged intakes were also a poor fit, requiring a lot of sanding and smoothing to give a clean join with the fuselage. In contrast, the big dorsal spine was a very good fit. Now onto painting. Ideally, I would like to have done the camouflaged light grey/light blue wraparound USAF scheme, but didn't have the decals, or good enough paint matches. So I went back to the default NASA option in the kit, albeit with the grey undersides as matt Hu 147 (FS 36495), instead of the gloss Hu 40 in the instructions. Hand-painting large sections of a sparsely detailed airframe in a light gloss colour is not my idea of fun, and white is even worse than yellow. The decals were OK, with a distinct matt finish. There are none on the wings. As I was unsure of their long-term adhesive properties, I sealed them in with a coat of varnish. The blue "go-faster" stripes were never the correct length, and the excess from the rear sections was used to complete those over the intakes. The forward stripes should probably converge around the nose, but don't, so I'll have to look into this. I'm currently painting the upper wings, and will apply a third coat before I go to bed ...
  9. Good day, everybody! It's my next model of legendary flying training deck Po-2 from Ukrainian 'ICM".
  10. Can anyone direct me to an available kit that comes with either a J57 or J75 engine? I'd like one just as a size reference for my U-2 build. Doesn't have to be super detailed, a general approximation will do. Cheers, DMC
