  1. I started this project at the Scottish nationals back in April so it has been on and off for a while bit like most of my builds really yes I know a couple need finished but it has just been to nice not to make the most of the good weather up here in the North East So as you can see the hull has a few fit problems this has started as a back to front project I got the WEM photo etch first then looked for the kit for about 2 years 🤷‍♂️ any way got it and started straight away in April but been busy with trying to finish another project first and Sid the spider is not playing games when it comes to helping with the rigging on Abercrombie a little intro The Sovremennyy-class destroyer is the principal anti-surface warship of the Russian Navy ("Sovremennyy" translates like "Modern"). The Soviet designation for the class was Project 956 Sarych (Buzzard). The primary role of this guided missile destroyer is to attack enemy warships while also providing sea and air defense for warships and transports under escort. It complements the Udaloy-class destroyers in anti-submarine operations. The project began in the late 1960s when it was becoming obvious in the Soviet Navy that naval guns still had an important role particularly in support of amphibious landings, but existing gun cruisers and destroyers were showing their age. A new design was started, employing a new 130 mm automatic gun turret. Single and twin mounts were developed, and the twin mount chosen for its superior rate of fire. In 1971 a go-ahead was given for the Severnaya design bureau to design "a ship capable of supporting amphibious landings".[1] At the same time, the United States Navy was constructing new large Spruance-class multi-role destroyers. To respond to this new threat, Project 956 was updated with new air defence suite and new, powerful 3M80 anti-ship missiles. Although the Soviet Navy had largely moved to gas turbine propulsion for its new warships, steam turbines were selected instead for Project 956: partly because production of naval gas turbines would have been insufficient for entire program. Lead ship of the class, Sovremennyy was laid down in 1976 and commissioned in 1980. A total of 18 have been built for the Russian Navy, but currently only 5 remain in service due to lack of funds and trained personnel. Additional 3 ships are ongoing modernization and overhaul and 2 are laid-up in reserve (the table lists 3 in service 2 in reserve and 1 being overhauled and 11 decommissioned + 4 Chinese). All the ships were built by Severnaya Verf 190 St. Petersburg. These ships have a maximum displacement of 7,940 tons. The ships are 156 metres (511 ft 10 in) in length, with a beam of 17.3 metres (56 ft 9 in) and a draught of 6.5 metres (21 ft 4 in). They are armed with an anti-submarine helicopter, 48 air defence missiles, eight anti-ship missiles, torpedoes, mines, long-range guns and a sophisticated electronic warfare system. There are a total of three versions of this class: the original Project 956 armed with the 3M80 version of the Moskit anti-ship missile, and its successor, the Project 956A, which is armed with the improved 3M80M version of the Moskit with longer range. The main difference between the two is that the missile launching tubes on Project 956A are longer than that of Project 956 to accommodate the increased size of the newer missile, and these launching tubes can be used to fire / store the original 3M80 as well. A third version, Project 956EM, later developed for the People's Liberation Army Navy Surface Force was the latest development of this class. Chinese media called the ship "carrier killer". Photos Hull,Photo Etch WEM and Box art as you can see this is an older kit so the hull upper and lower parts have had a lot of filling and sanding upper Structures and start of PE ladders going on and another first i will be using Colour Coats paints thanks to Jamie at Sovereign Hobbies Dont expect this to be any faster a build you should all know what my build speed is by now beefy the slow one
  2. Having just built a 50-year old kit I've embarked on a really good modern kit - Trumpeter's Arleigh Burke-class USS Hopper DDG-70, to be built with minimal extras. Looks like a REALLY good kit. Trumpeter have a "reputation" shall we say, but this kit looks like their high water mark (groan! ;D ) The two builds I've been doing really show up the difference between a good modern kit and an, ahem, older vintage one. Comprehensive instructions, big colour paint chart, nicely bagged and presented parts. Kit comes with waterline option, but the fit to the full hull is outstanding. Seriously good moulded details. This is top quality stuff. They even give you a full sheet of photoetch for all the railings and flight deck nets. Decals are good quality, but unfortunately the numbers are only presented in hi-viz: But you do get the awards and E markings, which is a nice touch. Luckily I have these for the hull numbers: Hawk Graphics lo-vis USN numbers. Despite the high quality of the kit parts, I'm a detail freak, so will add these parts from Veteran Models, they are stunningly good pieces. Started the build easily, it is such a great kit. Falls together from the start. First the waterline plate - perfect fit. Then the main deck - just a bit of tape to keep the seams tight: And at the other end, flight deck and rear bulkhead fits very nicely too. Great details on the bulkhead surfaces, the rest of the kit looks that good too. Another great feature of the kit is that practically every detail is separate, which makes painting a lot easier. And now to the obligatory change of plan...!! Originally I was going to make the USS Hopper straight from the Trumpeter box. But during research for the USS Decatur (DD-936) I kept coming back to its modern day counterpart the Decatur DDG-73. As this is a sister ship of the Hopper (same yard, same flight, same batch) I have decided to build my DDG as the Decatur as well! The only parts of the kit so far that needed filler: Modular construction - just like the real thing! Painting made easy by the fact that all the deck parts are separate from the superstructure parts. Clear windshield parts are coated with a iridescent film to look "cool" Uptakes and exhausts made from two halves per vent - very good fit requiring no filler at all: Main superstructure parts again fit together perfectly: These are all just glued together, no filler required at all! The complete aft funnel assembly - the horizontal sections are not glued, just dry-fitted: This is a fantastic kit! Every now and again Trumpeter really can do a great job, and this is one of those times. Al
