  1. This was a shocker... I was aware this Revell kit had its issues, but it fought me all the way... despite that quite happy with the final look (from a distance).. despite my ineptitude to get the fuel tank fins on the right way round (too late now to do anything about that).. She's been enhanced with a resin cockpit and a few other bits and bobs off the pylons.
  2. So the Christmas of 2020 was a little of a strange one, and the most of the year was no better. Constant home schooling and only essential shops being open. For most of us it was a good time to get plenty of bench time, and make out ways down the pile of kits in the stash. for me? It was a time to start fresh, go back to the basics of modelling, learn new techniques and above all come back to Britmodeller. For Christmas I asked the wife for just one thing, as the title suggests, yes a big tornado. For many years I have wanted to build a large scale tornado, and have all the bells and whistles to go with it. This Italeri offering was released late 2020 (November) and offered a large price tag to go with it (£109.99 - £129.99). Is it worth the price? Well let’s find out. As you can see, it has all the usual tornado parts, movable wings and ordnance, weapons, control surfaces which can be posed open or closed, real rubber tyres and wing gloves (nice touch), and much more. The decals are also impressive, with four options to choose from. These are for various tornados as follows. Tornado GR4, ZA542, danger mouse, operation Tellic 2003. Tornado GR4, ZA367, 617sqdn, Operation Herrick, 2010. Tornado GR4, ZA542, 31st sqdn, Operation Ellamy, 2011. All the decal options are printed in colour in a separate booklet (Nice touch). Those walkway lines sure look fun! The instruction book has clear construction stages from start to finish, showing each step and colour call outs on many parts. There is a number of parts which are not used, could indicate other versions of Tornado in the future? As for the construction it’s detailed but simple, clearly printed and easy to follow. Pilot and co-pilot seats with added photo etch (included). cockpit construction, very nice detail and separate parts for extra detail. Sudden jump to front undercarriage leg and bay assembly. Installed into underside of front fuselage, note drill points for chin pods. Wheels and doors, my advice would be to skip to near end of construction. Join on front fuselage halves and radar, noted weight in front and also detail painting. more cockpit assembly and start of intakes, note more photo-etch for display screens. Then a jump to the main fuselage, undercarriage legs and bays also shown in sub assemblies. Then the intakes are next, note the photo-etch splitter in the starboard intake, then the wing gloves can be installed. more internal construction, note option of open vents on underside of fuselage. Rear wings with locking pins to allow rear wings to operate. Construction of the engines, some nice details but could easily be improved. Same construction, not the optional parts for the thrust covers. Adding engines in are next, note you can opt for one engine out on a Tressel for added detail. With the engines comple it’s onto the wings, note the actuator to keep the pylons and tanks in line. Note also the option control surfaces. Then it’s onto airbrakes, again choice of open or closed. Then the two halves can be joined together. Once completed the front can be joined to the main fuselage. Then it’s the tornados signature tail. More photo-etch for the tail, and finally joined to the main assembly. Followed by the spine and ariels. Intakes are next to be added. Followed by wing covers. Followed by main wheels and legs. Undercarriage doors. Chin pods and alternate antennas. Arrester hook and start of ordnance. Refuelling boom in open or closed option. Antennas and probes. Canopy and nose cone. The finished article. I will show pictures of parts when I open the bags. I will be starting this very soon, hopefully tonight. I plan on doing option 1 for ZA542 with the danger mouse and penfold duo on the nose. thanks for looking, work to begin soon.
  3. Evening all. I'm compiling information for an upcoming project where by I want to depict a Tonka on Telic (Op Telic 8 specifically, during my deployment). I've found a decent reference of ZA553/DI (previously deployed and fondly named "Dishy Intel" during the invasion of Iraq). The photographers notes appear to confirm that it was taken during the specified era with armaments relative to its time but one thing has me 2nd guessing... It's wearing Sqn Markings! 31Sqn in particular, and I can't seem to find any other evidence to confirm this. Could any of you fine gentlemen (or women) shed any light on this please? Here's the link to my reference: https://www.dvidshub.net/image/20448/tornado
  4. Hey, I'm planning on building a Tornado GR.4 from the latest Revell 1/48 kit depicting ZD714. The empty fuselage pylons kind of bother me so I planned to place some Eduard Storm Shadows down there and also replace the AIM-9s from the box with their Eduard resin counterparts. The question is: Would these weapons be carried at all by this machine? From the images I've been able to find the Storm Shadows should be OK but I'm not sure about the AIM-9s. If these would be carried are Eduard's AIM-9M/L the correct version? Also, is there any resin replacement for the GR.4 cockpit? I've been able to find NeOmega's IDS cockpit but this is not the correct one here.... right? Many thanks in advance! Cristian
  5. - Hi, I'm Sebastien and I'm a Tornadoholic - Hi Sebastien. This kit is lovely, and now I have two under my belt and a dozen or so to build, I thought I might do a WIP. My point isn't to build the ultimate Tornado. I couldn't, and the one and only General Melchett is doing a brilliant job about it. I'm just here to help average modellers like me to avoid the little troubles you can have building this kit. So I'll accept all pointers, kicks in the butt, subtle and not so subtle hints and bribes Lagavulin pieces of advice you'll throw my way, and be grateful about them. Now, on with the build. I started by more or less following the instructions (yeah, I know, who does that?), and assembled the cockpit to the fuselage bottow and front wheel well : I glued the WSO instrument panel and while the glue was setting, I dry fitted a nose wall to the fuselage. That way, the instrument panel took its intended position without fuss. I scrounged the IPs from a Tornado IDS and the console panels from the GR4 kit: Then it was time to install the air intakes, without gluing the front to the fuselage: Now, the intake ramps. On the left, how they should be for a Tornado sitting on the ground. On the right, how they are in the box. You have to remove the protruding bit. Shaun, thanks for the tip. The intake fronts are assembled and glued to the nose walls. The nose walls are dryfitted to the fuselage: The importance of not gluing the intake block front to the fuselage is there: now, you have some leeway to adjust everything. I don't remember who wrote about that here, and I'm sorry, but whoever you are, thanks a lot. To be continued.
  6. Right i've been working on this for the past few evenings. It's the Revell IDS kit from the black panther boxing, i've pinched the Gr4 bits from the otherwise crappy Airfix kit. Pretty much built as is but i jave added a few homemade aerials probably not 100% accurate but they look the part. so on with some photo's The canopy isn't affixed yet as im still deciding whether to stick some blokes inside.
