  1. I plan to bulid Roland P. Beamont's Tempest V (JN751) in 1/48, by Eduard. According to the instructions of the kit, the Wing Commander pennant was painted only on the starboard side on this plane (oriented in the wrong direction). On the other hand, I found other illustrations about the port side, depicting the plane as wearing the pennant. I would like to know, do you have knowledge of any photos about the port side of this plane? Many thanks! Regards, Will
  2. Welcome all! This is my 1/72 Airfix Hawker Tempest Mk V which I finished earlier in the year. It's a really nice kit , goes together with no hassle at all. My modifications were to thin the trailing edges, add foil belts, fix wing tip and tail lights, rivet all over, make a better aerial from stretched sprue and use a set of resin wheels. Paints are airbrushed with a mix of Tamiya and Mr Color and I finished off by weathering with oils and ground up pastel dust. WIP is here: I hope you like the pics!
  3. Another year closes off... only done 1 build this year..my tribute build to my uncle Peter A Tribute build 1:32 Hawker Tempest V NV-728 "US-X" 56 Punjab Squadron - April 1945. This was a mammoth project , just in relation to the discovery of the true story of Uncle Peter's service in the RAF . Back in Jan I didn't even know what his service number was..I didn't know he flew with Pierre Closterman and is mentioned in The Big Show several times..what a journey and the reactions of many on here was humbling and very satisfying..thank you to those who joined me on this very personal journey Uncle Peter 3rd from Right.. RIP 1924 -1983
  4. Here's my latest completion, Eduard's superb Typhoon V. This aircraft was flown by F/Lt Remi 'Mony' van Lierde, a Belgian national flying as 'B' Flight commander with 3 Sqn from RAF Newchurch in June 1944. This shows the real aircraft (image copyright World War Photos). Of interest are the Belgian national colours on the spinner, and the invasion stripes painted 'around' the national insignia and squadron codes on the fuselage - I have attempted to represent both. Hope you like her - thanks for looking! If you're interested you can find the WIP thread here... Thanks, Roger I made a bit of a pig's ear of the fuselage invasion stripes which had to be repaired with a hairy stick. I'm going to blame the 'erks' who painted the stripes - acceptable get out of jail card? Just for fun, one with my recently completed Airfix Mustang IV. Two formidable aircraft from different theatres of operation...
  5. Hi all... ...trying to mask my 1/72 Academy Tempest V using the AML camo mask. However from the pic below I cant get the correct alignment of the nose mask sections which are in two halves. Has anyone runt into probs with AML masks before or I'm I doing something totally wrong? The mask is AMLM 73 012 1/72 scale Hawker Tempest Mk.V so should match my kit? Ta in advance
  6. Coming to you in the July issue of SAMI, here's my take on the special Hobby 1/32 Tempest V, in the markings of Pilot Officer George ‘Lefty’ Whitman, 3 Sqn, RAF, June 8th, 1944 - he was Roland Beamont's wingman that day. I used various aftermarket bits, including the CMK cannon bay set for the starboard wing. Pilot figure by MDC, along with his faithful companion, from a set of RAF figures by Masterbox. Hope you like it!
  7. I see in their June info publication that Eduard will be bringing out another Tempest V kit in their 'Royal Class' series, a duel combo. As a confirmed long time Tempest nut, I'm excited by the prospect, I'm sure it will be great and probably good value. But on a note of realism I already have enough Eduard Tempests in my stash and I'm not sure I have the room or time for another (sacrilege!) BUT - the kit will include a publication by Chris Thomas 'An Illustrated History of the Temporary Tempest', which may tip the balance of sensible behaviour. I wonder if it might be sold separately? Charlie
  8. I found Academy´s Tempest at a good price, and I wanted to know the opinions of other people before I buy it (fit etc...) Also, about the decals. An article on Modeling Madness says they worked perfectly, but the author of the kit´s preview on the same site mentions Academy decals would peel off the model after some time, and comments on other sites say the decals wouldn´t even stick to the model. Is this something that could be solved by soaking them in very hot water and then applying decal softener (I use Vallejo´)? Thank you kindly.
  9. Hawker Tempest V Hi-Tech 2 1:32 Special Hobby The Tempest was an attempt by Sidney Camm's team at Hawker to "fix" the Typhoon's shortfalls, which although they were few were important enough for them to throw a lot of time and money at them. As far as attempts go, it was pretty successful, but it left us modellers with a fairly confusing array of designs that look substantially different from each other, let alone the Tiffie. The over-thick wing of the Tiffie had resulted in too much drag, so this was ditched and replaced by the new Laminar Flow aerofoil as demonstrated by the then new Mustang, which necessitated an exceptionally smooth riveted finish to maximise the benefits of the design. Because they were to be fitted with engines that were experimental at the time, the Ministry insisted on a number of different engine fits to prevent delays re-engining the airframe if one type was delayed or terminated. This led to a the differences in the front end, from the Mk.I with a Spitfire-like nose, the Mk.II with a Fury-style nose, and the V which had the more recognisable Typhoon-style nose. The V was the first to receive approval from the Ministry and after the IV had engine problems the V became the main initial variant, and after the Tornado was cancelled the Mk.II went ahead with its Centaurus engine and cylindrical cowling. In service the Tempest Mk.V was found to be an excellent aircraft, and was the fastest prop-driven fighter of WWII at low altitude. It was also rugged, and could take punishment, and could be thrown around the sky by a competent pilot despite its thin wing. It was responsible for downing a number of jet-powered Me.262s and had an exceptional kill to loss ratio. The Kit This is the second Hi-Tech boxing of the Tempest V, the first was reviewed here with all of the plastic retained from the first Mk.V, along with the photo-etch, masks and HGW seatbelts. As the original kit has proved very popular Special Hobby have re-released it, however rather than just release the same kit they have gone to the next level. This boxing has a new plastic sprue which comes from the Tempest Mk.II (reviewed here), containing a full set of rockets for the kit. New Sprue As well as including this new sprue the fine folks at Special Hobby decided to change the resin around in the kit. You still get resin wheels and a pilots seat & Cockpit like the original Mk V, however you do not get the rest of the original kits resin gun barrels. This is not to say Special Hobby are short changing the modeller, far from it! This boxing contains a resin Napier Sabre engine, exhausts, complete engine bay; and resin engine bay panels to display next to the model. New Resin Markings There are four decal sheets, containing national markings, aircraft codes, stencils, and finally some additional codes with squadron crests and instrument dials for the cockpit. The decals have been printed by Eduard and are in good registration, sharpness and colour density, sporting a thin glossy carrier film cut close to the printed areas. From the box you can build one of the following: JF-E/SN222 "le Grande Charles", Flt Lt Pierre Closermann, 3 Sqn, Fassberg April/May 1945. JBW/EJ750 Wg Cmd Wary, Vokel late 1944. JJ-F/EJ762, Flt Lt Fairbanks, 274 Sqn, Volkel, October 1944. 5R-B/SN206, Flt Off Rens, Quackenbruk, 33Sqn, May 1944. J5-H/SN330, Sqr Ldr Cole, Wunstorf 1946. The last option is in overall High Speed Silver with Green codes, all the others are standard camo. Quite a broad spread of options that should suit most modellers, given the variety of the schemes. Conclusion Another stand-out Tempest from our friends at Special Hobby, with a box full of goodies that might usually be an aftermarket set with other manufacturers. Highly recommended. 10. Never able to make much of a showing in quality, I continue my efforts to make headway in the quantity department. Finished since January 1: a TSR.2 prototype (Airfix), E.D. "Rosie" Mackie's Tempest V (Academy), Bohdan Arct's Mustang III (Academy), an IRIAF F-14 (Hobbyboss) and an F-5E (also Hobbyboss), a CFS Gnat (Airfix) (surprisingly tricky build, which may tell you how poor my skills are), a 54 Squadron Jaguar GR1 (Hasegawa), and a Voyska-PVO MiG-21bis FISHBED-L (Zvezda). I have made a jillion mistakes, including forgetting to add the anti-glare strip on the Tomcat, but by that point I was so fed up with it I was long passed caring. There! My shame, laid bare for all to see. Also, in retrospect, I would have masked the Tomcat's camouflage, rather than trying to freehand it, as the masked F-5E's scheme came out much better, I think. One thing I am surprised at is that I've seen a number of Jaguar builds where the LRMTS window is painted silver; this seemed to me to be something that I might be able to actual use some "basic modelling skills" (almost all of which totally elude me, I'm sorry to say) to improve upon, and so I drilled some holes in it with a pin vice and then slowly expanded the hole until it was more or less LRMTS-window-sized, whereupon out came the micro-crystal clear. I think it looks quite nice.
