  1. Hi mates! Last August, I started a project for a "quick build" of the 1:72 Special Hobby kit of the Fairey Firefly FR.1. Naively I let my fellow Britmodellers talk me into doing a "dual build" since I also had the Special Hobby kit of the TT.4 in my stash. And then the final elbow - I succumbed to numerous requests to fold the wings on the TT.4. Dementia had finally shown its face. So here we are, six months later and the kits are finally done. You can read the whole sordid work in progress thread here. (It's really not so bad!) I don't think I need to provide a short history of the Firefly. The fine Britmodellers on this forum are keenly aware of their aviation heritage and the important role their aircraft have played throughout the years. Special thanks to Steve Long (NAVY870), our friend from Australia, for his incredible help during this build. No matter how silly my questions were, he always had the answer. Of course, he lives with a real Firefly TT. As usual here is my Executive Summary: Project: Fairey Firefly FR.1 and TT.4 Kit: Special Hobby Fairey Firefly FR.Mk.1 (kit no. 72195) and Fairey Firefly TT.Mk.4 (kit no. 72066) Scale: 1:72 (the only scale that matters) Decals: From the kits, Fairey Firefly FR.1, MB464/272-Y, 837 Squadron FAA, HMS Glory 1945, Fairey Firefly TT.4, VG974/501-TD, 700 Squadron FAA, RNAS Ford, 1955 Resin: Extensive cockpit and wheel well resin components included with the kits; Barracuda Studios Firefly Early Main Wheels (72137) and British 4-Slot 32 inch Main Wheels - Block Tread (72222) Photoetch: In addition to the frets included with the kits, the Marabu Designs British landing lights (72002) were used Canopy Masks: Montex set (72108) Paint: Colourcoats BS 640 Extra Dark Sea Grey, BS 634 Dark Slate Grey; Gunze H364 Interior Grey Green (my own custom counterfeit recipe), H74 Sky Type S, H77 Tire Black, H90 Clear Red, H94 Clear Green, H95 Smoke Gray; Testors 2072 RLM 04 Gelb; Floquil 110100 Old Silver; Tamiya XF-69 NATO Black; Alclad 125 High Speed Silver, 302 Grey Primer, 314 Klear Kote Flat Weathering: Pastel chalks; Prismacolor Silver Pencil Improvements/Corrections/Modifications The FR.1 was built essentially out-of-the-box, the only additions being the aerial wire, IFF antenna, and the landing and navigation lights (made from a clear plastic fork). Most of the extra work was done on the TT.4 as follows: Carburettor intake under engine cowling was left out of Special Hobby kit, so one was scratch built by scabbing formed styrene on the lower fuselage and blending it into the cowling Separated the wings for folding - since the full span Fairey-Youngman flaps fold with the outer wings this made for some interesting cutting patterns All exposed inner wing details were scratch built All wing fold mechanism details were scratch built Wing jury struts made from 0.025" styrene rod Inner fuselage structure and associated details (where the Fairey-Youngman flaps attach to the center fuselage) were scratch built Radiator inlet vanes were replaced with 0.015" styrene Navigation lights were scratch built and added to each wing, made with clear plastic silverware Landing light was scratch built from clear plastic silverware and photoetch reflectors from Marabu Design Rear view mirror and housing added to top of outer port wing Cables on horizontal and vertical tail, to prevent drogue chute from interfering with flight surfaces, made from 0.005" Nitinol wire Cable tie-down brackets on end of horizontal tails made from copper wire VHF whip antenna made from 0.005" Nitinol wire Added photoetch catapult hooks Elapsed time: 6 months! A fair bit longer than anticipated. At this rate, my stash will be exhausted in 2157. At 13:30. How about some photos? First, a family portrait. As can be seen in the following photos, the folded wings are aligned with each other and are at the same height: To achieve this, I designed, built, and used a high precision alignment and gluing jig constructed from the highest technology aerospace alloys: A splendid time was had by all! Cheers, Bill
  2. I came across this photo and video about Swordfish target tugs in the Indian Ocean. https://www.britishpathe.com/video/trai ... See film from 0.20 onwards. Can anyone point me in the direction of any additional photos, plans etc of this TT setup on the Swordfish and give me some idea of how easy or otherwise it was to mount / dismount on the aircraft. Also, as it seems to fill the Observers space, does anyone know if it could be fitted at same time as the ASV IIN set or was it an either / or fit. Thanks in advance
  3. So the Heller-Matchbox 1/72 combo is ready. A target towing plane from the Swedish A.F. The two targets are scratch built. and the plane was converted. More about the build here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235007520-saab-j-29f-tunnan-target-tower/
  4. After the Sea Fury and Meteor Target tugs it is time for a SAAB. It will be an Heller/Matchbox combo. The F-model had an after burner and that made the rear "fatter". I decided to use the Heller J 29E and add the engine fairing from the Matchbox F-model. To cut both kits exactly the same is hard so there were large gaps needed to be filled between the parts. I used plastic strips for this. I decided to use the Matchbox cockpit as well as it is more accurate. I didn't like the seat so I removed it and added the Heller seat instead. I made a new rear wall of plastic card using the Heller tub as pattern. I then added the Maestro Models etch parts to the cockpit. As they are for the Heller kit so I had to adapt them to fit. I wanted clear navigation lights at the wing tips. So clear plastic wedges was glued in place. When the glue has set the lights was sanded to the right shape. The towing equipment is in place. I used modified Airfix Draken pylons. The MBV-2S towing winch comes from Maestro Models. The counterweight is a Matchbox Tunnan drop tank that I added fins to. I have to build a red beacon light for the fuselage top.
  5. Next month this one has been sitting on the shelf for ten years. I took it out as I'm in at "Tugger mode" right now. I wasn't sure on how the masks of the canopy would react after this long time so I tried to remove it. When that worked I decided to restart on the build. When I left it I had just realised that I had made the target winch to small and received more information about the towing equipment. I started to build some of it with thin brass strips. and finished the paint job. Then I built a new winch. Much bigger than the last one. Now I'm building the rest of the towing equipment. I think that I can finish the kit this time.
  6. Gday All Pictured, my recently finished 1/48 scale Beaufighter Target Tug on my 1/1 scale lawn, which I admit looks silly It is of course the lovely 48 scale Tamiya kit converted to an Australian target Tug using the very complete Redroo conversion set. The conversion set includes resin and brass, in fact everything that is required, even metallic coloured thread for the tail protector cables Very comprehensive instructions are also included as are decals to build 4 aircraft all from the immediate post war period. Painted using Humbrol enamels and metres of tamiya tape! Unfortunately, somewhere along the way I the landing light cover got misplaced. I will have to fabricate a new one if the kit one does not turn up Thanks for looking Bruce
  7. Well, once it arrives I'll be converting a High Planes Canberra B.2 into a TT.18. I have the Model Art decals and I have the Ruston Winch set from Kits for Cash (formerly Heritage Aviation), however I am still waiting on the kit arriving. I ordered it 2 weeks ago and am still waiting for it.... I have been in touch with the vendor but am still awaiting a response as to the status of my order. If this doesn't pan out, there's plenty of other options in the stash to choose from, including Hawks, SHARs, Sea Kings, Hellcats and Corsairs so I will be participating in one form or another. Mark.
