  1. Kit - Eduard MiG-21R Profi Edition Paint - All Acrylics Decals - Spares & kit Extras - None MiG-21R (Unit unknown) Syrian Air Force Late 1980's. So just about eight weeks on this one, everything you see (except the roundels & side number) is straight from the Eduard box, no after-market used at all. Paint is all acrylic and all mixed 'until it looks about right'. And therein is the elephant on the workbench. For the finish I used three separate profiles from three different artists, and according to some, Syrian AF MiG's didn't wear these colours in this style, apparently somewhere down the road a photo was misinterpreted and then became a profile... Of course I was made aware of this when I was too deep into the build to turn back, but hey... it's a hobby not brain surgery, right ?. Regardless, I love the final outcome, definitely NOT an easy shake'n bake weekend project, but sometimes I (we ?) need a more challenging build to keep us real, wouldn't you say. Please feel free to ask questions, raise concerns or make any sort of comment. Cheers from a still very warm & sunny NZ. Ian.
  2. Hello there, I have been enthralled by this image of a syrian t62 tank at the oz 77 memorial at golan heights for the yom kippur war. I have not been able to dig up any information on the unusual camo scheme which appears to me as if it has been painted an off pinkish red tone with black camouflage. If you look closely you can see the original factory Russian 4bo paint coming through, clearing beneath the red paint work. What I can't seem to figure out is whether this reddish tone is a result of some sort of sun bleaching effect or if it was painted that way? It seems possoble that the turret and the front of the tank were painted by the syrians but the rest of the tank remained in the factory colours.. It's also entirely possible the paint was applied after the tank was destroyed but it seems from the info I've gathered that this tank was destoryed in these colours and was left just the way it was. Another interesting thing I noticed is that the reddish paint appears to be much more durable the factory green which appears to have mostly rusted away suggesting to me that the parts that remain red on the tank were the only parts that were painted red. I'd like to build a theoretical operational version of this tank, a sort of "what if" project using the few pictures I can find, but before I begin I'd like to know if anyone here on the forum has any information on this particular tank, or syrian t-62's in general. 100% historical accuracy doesn't concern me but I want to produce a believable result and gather as much info as I can before I begin the project. Give me your thoughts and opinions, I'd love to know what you think. Thanks.
  3. I started this kit several years ago and unfortunately it found it's way to the shelf of doom. However, I dusted it of for just such a group build over on LSP as this is an aircraft far too nice looking to let sit half built...and it was an expensive model!! The kit has excellent detail straight out of the box, fit is ok, probably one of PCM's better, but it still requires a little elbow grease to get everything fitted nicely. The decal sheet is really nice, although I didn't use any of them, rather I used my compass cutter and some red stars from the spares box for the Syrian insignia. Overall I'm happy this is now done and sitting in the cabinet.
  4. Kit Hobbyboss 1:48 ‘J-5’. Paint All Tamiya acrylics & oil washes. Decals Hi Decal 48-012. Extras Pavla resin seat. MiG 17F Syrian Air Force ‘Yom Kippur War’ 1973 Built for the ‘From Russia With Love’ campaign over on www.modelersalliance.com. Lots of pre & post-shading to get the faded and ‘dried-out’ paint effects. Relatively straight-forward build which would have been completed a lot faster if we hadn’t had moved house in the middle of the project !! – build thread is http://www.modelersalliance.com/forum/from-russia-with-love/147646-mig-17-syrian-af-f-i-n-i-s-h-e-d#159721 if you’d like to take a look. As ever, thanks for taking the time to look, and all comments, criticism and questions are very welcome. AFN Ian
