  1. 9A52-2 SMERCH-M 1/35th scale Trumpeter 01020 Hmmmm! Now, here is the dilema??? Two at Once? This is a dilema many of us come across, especially these days with competition as it is - MENG or Trumpeter, Trumpeter or MENG - which one shall I build? Well, the £20 difference in basic costs does make a certain statement and as I already have the Trumpeter Scud-B on the back burner I decided on economy. A lot fewer sprues but much larger and, without sitting down for several hours to count them, the number of parts would look to be similar quantity. Costs in at £79.99 RRP Section 1 and 49 parts. Construction of the main chassis - right side At 322mm long and 20mm/35mm across this is the most important part of the chassis All jigged up on my Picador Blocks, the chassis is square and true. Section 2 and a further 25 parts complete phase 2 of the main chassis At this point, everything fits in extremely well with no surprises. So far, all parts are well engineered. The left side-member is not yet glued but is held in place with tape to ensure the cross-members dry correctly. A few more bits still to add. Next Time: Remaining Chassis & Engine
  2. MAZ-543M Sagged Wheel Set 1:35 Meng Models This set of resin wheels is designed to fit their new 9A52-2 Smerch in 1:35, which I've just reviewed here, to replace the kit parts with something a little more detailed that has a degree of sag engineered in. The set arrived in a black box, and inside is a stunning orange liner, plus eight resin wheels with moulded-in hubs, all individually coddled in small bubble-wrap bags. The wheels are all cast on small tapered block with three sprues attaching it to the bottom tread-blocks on the sagged part of the tyre. There is also a number embossed on the side of the casting block, ranging from one to eight. This is because Meng haven't just made one master and cast it eight times, but have instead made eight masters in different positions so that the tread-blocks and nomenclature embossed into the sidewalls is in a different position, as would most likely happen in the field. This adds a little realism and shows Meng's dedication to the finer points of modelling. The casting is first-rate, as is the detail, and the pour stubs have been located so that clean-up is minimal. The picture above shows two wheels of the eight that had snapped off the blocks during transit. Little more than a buff with a sander would see them ready for a wash in warm soapy water and then installation. Below is a picture lifted from Meng's site showing the wheels painted and weathered – and very nice they look too! Conclusion While the kit parts would probably suffice for most modellers, these resin replacements are easy to use, more detailed, and more robust long-term. Very highly recommended. 4. Not enough tag space for all of these :-) Eight new TRUMPETER releases! Three new MERIT INTERNATIONAL releases! We mentioned the Russian Smerch in an earlier post. In shops now, but only a few from this first batch left. 1/72nd scale MiG-29A Fulcrum (Izdeliye 9.12) is a new tool, topped up with rockets from Su-27 kit TM01645. 1/48nd scale JL-9 Plateau Eagle is a new tool, with additional ordnance and pylons from the J-10 (TM02841) and fuel tanks fro the J-7 (TM02858). 1/350th scale USS KITTY HAWK CV-63 is a new tool. The single-piece hull and single-peck flight deck have to be seen, measuring in at a little over 93.5cm. That's just over a yard in old money :-) Turning to the Trumpeter variants, the 1/35th scale Iraq T-62 Mod 1962 includes a new turret, and also comes with a KMT-6 mine plough/plow, while the mighty 2S7 SPG features a new wheel set. From Merit International, we have the extraordinary 1/18th scale Harrier prebuilt display model (see next post), plus for maritime fans, 1/350th scale USS Enterprise CV-6 which comes with the necessary parts to differentiate it from CV-5 USS Yorktown released in early 2015, and the 1/72nd scale OSA-II Russian fast missile boat. http://www.pocketbond.co.uk/NewReleases.aspx?id=0&page=1&ipp=25
