  1. After seeing the recent and beautiful Gauntlet build by @galgos, I felt compelled to try a few silver biplanes from the ‘golden era’. I envisage these being flown by jolly chaps with handlebar moustaches who drive open top sports cars, play polo and generally have a roaringly splendid time. A few bouts of aerobatics then off to the village pub for gin and impressionable young ladies. And damn good show too chaps! Anyway, it was probably nothing like that, but the silver biplanes look cool and I like the colourful squadron markings on these things, so I bought a few on eBay … Unfortunately, the Gauntlet has no decals. Reference books … I need to buy some very thin wire for the wing braces. First up, I thought I’d try the Siskin. It seems quite simple compared to the Airfix ones, so a good place to start. Hopefully I won’t get bored and want to start another 1/48 fast jet! 😂 I’m going to do the 29 Sqn one. The Matchbox kit is very basic, so already I’m tempted to add my own detail, such as an instrument panel. Plastic card should suffice for this. What colour were Siskin interiors!? Anyone? Matchbox say black, but I want to be sure that’s correct. Wooden instrument panel? Some nice 1/72 diagrams in Silver Wings.
  2. This is my entry for the Group Build. I built this kit in 1980, and I have a memory of it being in the same colours. It will have added detail rather than straight from the box, as I know I am unlikely to build another one. My two major sources of reference are shown and, it will be finished as the Squadron Leaders aircraft of No. 43 Squadron from Modeldecal Sheet 31A. The first major job will be to drill holes for rigging whilst it is easy to do. I have an Aeroclub Jaguar engine and going to use it instead of the kit engine, if the fit is not too bad. I am looking forward to doing this kit as it offers the prospect of proper old-fashioned modelling. No resin and no bespoke etch for the details that I plan on adding.
  3. Hello all, Today I've started on a new set of builds to add to my British collection while I wait for parts and paints to arrive for the Stranraer and a few other builds I have yet to post. Among others, I have a Persian Fury, Avro 504, and P-47 in the works. The classic Matchbox kits are some of my favorites, as they can produce a great model with little work, or can be upgraded as the builder wishes. The Siskin, Gladiator, and Fury have to be my favorites, and so armed with one each of the Gladiator and Fury and 2 of the Siskin, I've set out on a Triple Build. Additionally, I spent an embarrassing amount of money to obtain a copy of ModelDecal Sheet 31 to obtain decals for all 3. Having just built the Heller Gladiator in Chinese markings, I will be starting with the Fury and Siskin. That's all for the moment, Stay safe, Tweener
  4. At last, here is my Matchbox 1/72 A.W. Siskin IIIA. Decals courtesy of @72modeler Wheels were sourced from an SH A17 Nomad as I would never be able to paint the kit wheels and felt these looked far better either way. Now to sort the wheels on an Airfix Demon... That's all for now, Thanks all, Tweener
  5. Hey all, I've made good progress on the Matchbox 1/72 Siskin IIIA. Thanks to Mike ( @72modeler) new decals are on the way. Other than forgetting to attach the gunsight in time, I'd say it's a very pleasant build, and I am thankful that the top wing went on well. That's all for now, Stay healthy, Tweener
  6. Having failed to complete a Felixstowe for the Floatplane GB I decided on a little break from it and tackled a Siskin instead. These Matchbox kits go together really well and is completed pretty muck OOB. Rigging is stretched sprue, I usually use fishing line but sprue has worked out easier in this case as little of the rigging goes through the bottom wing and is therefore difficult to tension.Extra points for anyone who can spot the howling mistake!

  8. Both Airfix and Amodels Avro 504's have the early type of undercarriage with a central ski. After the WW I several Avro 504's (e.g Swedish ones) got a Siskin style undercarriage strut arrangement like in the Matchbox Siskin. Are there any aftermarket struts, plastic, resin or metal to get?
  9. Just finished the Matchbox Siskin. I am impressed by the excellent engineering these kits had. Fun build, landing gear was a bit of a terror, but still fun. Greg in OK
  10. Hi, Over the past few weeks I've put this little collection of 1/72 scale 1930's fighters of the RAF together. They are a mixed bag of Airfix and Matchbox kits, some old, and some new. I must admit, they have all been a pleasure to build. Some of the kit decals couldn't be rescued owing to their +40 years age, but on the whole they went on ok. Additional decals came from friends half-used sheets. Thank you John and Chris. These aircraft certainly add a little colour to the display shelf. I have a couple more to build, but so far the collection includes: Airfix - Demon, Bulldog, Gladiator, and a Gauntlet (converted from a Gladiator) Matchbox - Siskin, and Fury. I am in great admiration of those who can add the bracing wires.... you will see that I didn't. Life's too short, and well beyond my skill! ;-) Thanks for looking,
  11. Hi folk,s my lucky son just received twenty plus old bi-plane kits from his wife's Grandfather and some real gems there are but he kindly gave me this little beauty!
