Hello all You may remember that I was very privileged to fly alongside the Duxford-based Lysander last October, so I jumped at the chance to get close to the Shuttleworth Collection's "Lizzie" for a Secret War and Lysander tour. The aircraft was undergoing her three-year check, so it was interesting to see her with various panels and wheels off. The propeller had been off for an internal inspection. Cracks had been found in the wheels, so a temporary fix of laser-welding was underway, while CAD drawings are being produced to replace the original cast magnesium alloy units with wheels machined from aluminium alloy. The laminated flat front windscreen is starting to crack and will be replaced. The other cockpit windows will be replaced using moulds on loan from the Aircraft Restoration Company. Cracks have been found in and around the fins of the cylinder heads of the Mercury engine. Some of the cracks can be repaired by laser welding. The tour of the aircraft was followed by a cup of coffee or tea and a slice of cake as the guide talked us through a typical Special Duties mission to France. All in all, a very enjoyable and interesting afternoon. Thanks for looking.

After several rainy days in a row, the sun thankfully put in an appearance for today's event at The Shuttleworth Collection: The Gathering Of Moths. This is a free event and well worth coming to if vintage aeroplanes are your thing. I took a few pictures while I was there. Ok, I tell a lie: I took over 700 pictures while I was there! The lighting conditions were constantly changing, and proved to be a bit of a challenge at times. Anyway, I have opened a temporary account at Flickr (I can't stand Flickr, but it'll do until I find something better) to host a small selection of the photos. Here's a few of them: (Well, that was an effort! I see that Flickr is just as "user friendly" as it was ten years ago!) The Paddock was opened to the great unwashed for ninety minutes, which I think is mainly a brilliant idea. Mainly, because it's bloomin' difficult to get a good pic while the world and his wife are blissfully unaware of everyone and everything around them, displaying all the situational awareness of a bat wearing ear muffs. My patience was tried many times today, but it was well worth it in the end and I have to thank the Collection for the opportunity to get close to so many lovely, old aeroplanes. Once I have found a suitable replacement for P****bucket, I will gradually get round to re-uploading all my old pictures, plus all the new ones I've taken since, which is probably around a thousand! I'm thinking about giving Smugmug a go, as they seem to offer exactly what I'm after. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has experience of it, or thoughts on alternatives. I tried Village Photos, but it was just awful. Nothing worked properly and it took over a month for support to get back to me! That's deleted now. Cheers, Mark.- 9 replies

Hi My favourite airframe in the Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden is the 1941 Hawker Sea Hurricane Ib. "Hurricane Z7015 was built by Canadian Car & Foundry at its Fort William, Ontario, plant during 1940 as a Mk I, after flight testing Z7015 was shipped to the UK. On June 27 1941 it was converted to Sea Hurricane Ib standard. Z7015 had a patchy wartime flying career, which ended in 1943, when it was delivered to Loughborough College as an instructional airframe. It remained there until it was transferred to the Shuttleworth Collection in 1961. Z7015 was used statically in the 'Battle of Britain' film, before restoration to flying condition began." Here are a few of my pictures that I used for reference during this quick, straight from the box build: I understand that this kit is a re-release, and I must say that I didn't find the construction to be particularly easy. She was painted with Humbrol enamels and finished with a coat of Klear to match the real aircraft. The only weathering was exhaust staining courtesy of Mig Pigments Black Smoke. There were six decal options in the box, but (surprisingly?) none of the options was for the Old Warden aircraft, so a lot of cutting of decals was required to create the codes and serial for this aircraft.
