I miss the troop-carrying USMC H-34 from Vietnam war in my collection (I know, it was manufactured as HUS-1). I also know that I chose the wrong time - the excellent Italeri model (also boxed as Revell and Tamiya) has been out of stock for years. Hence the first question: how much worse is HobbyBoss? If it wasn't so much worse, I'd be out of the situation. However, the HB model (both boxes) has only the main landing gear in the bent lower arm version - apparently this was the case with the first 1,165 S-58s, including 615 Army H-34s, 300 carrier-based HSS-1 ASW birds, 219 HUS-1 for the USMC and 31 civilian machines. A later type of undercarriage - with triangle wishbones, was only available in Revell, Tamiya and Italeri kits (the one with the Italian HSS in the picture). However, it is not clear about the exhaust pipes layout - there were 2 solutions (pipes in the middle of the nose or from the bottom of the fuselage). Is there a serial number case again, or was one solution typical for HSS and the other for HUS and H-34? The Italeri #1066 (with the USMC machine in the picture) has both noses, Revell and Italeri HSS only have one, I don't know about Tamiya, and HB gives one nose in each box. An additional problem is the colour profiles - on many, the undercarriage variant does not correspond to the BuAer number, according to which the HUS-1 #147201 and HSS-1 #147635 were the last a/c with the old landing gear, and the first ones with the new gear were HSS #147984 and HUS #148053. Can someone help me with this puzzle? Cheers Michael
