  1. Hello all, this will be my second build for this GB, another Twotter. I had scratchbuilt a passenger cabin interior previously, but our kind Hosts @JOCKNEY and @Rabbit Leader have kindly given me the go-ahead to continue. The obligatory shots: first the box Then the parts (before I had started it!) The markings I will be using: I will be using the black cheat-line, registration and some other, less visible markings for the Maldivian Air Taxi, similar to this one which I photographed on our honeymoon, just before we flew in one: I had made up some seating from plastic card, and then attached that lot, once painted, to the cockpit assembly And that was just about it! This will be done in conjunction with my Yeti Airlines build elsewhere in this GB, and there will be varying amounts of upgrades done to both. I have three Aerocraft upgrade sets, and will use various bit on these kits, rather than one on the lot. I think. I am having trouble working out what will be what, but I am sure it will work out in the end. Anyway, I am off to the bench now, and I will see what happens. All the best, Ray PS There are so many scheme for the Twin Otter, I may need to get some more (these are my 3rd and 4th so far), my wife just raises her eyebrows whenever I mention a Twin Otter. Come on Airfix, you know you want to...
  2. I had a root around the stash looking for Matchbox kits as well as Revell re-boxes and have pulled out a few. I think I'll avoid some of the bigger ones (Heyford, Stranraer, Victor) and concentrate on a number of less ambitious ones. This one isn't even from the stash, I treated myself to a trip to Hannants at Colindale last week and this one jump straight of the shelves into my awaiting mitts. I'd always wanted one but never managed to buy the Matchbox one when available all those years ago. Anyway its a straightforward kit and therefore a good start for the GB. And it has a lovely MB diorama base. Everything on 2 nicely moulded grey sprues. Almost no flash and not a moulding flaw in sight. Apart from the obliteration of the MB identity information. The old one page of Instructions have been replaced by a 16 page glossy booklet. And there's markings for 4 versions of unknown units, all 8th Army, three in the Western Desert and one in Italy, although one has German markings, which may be a captured example. There was a lot of re-use of captured tanks and vehicles in the desert it would appear. So now to get glueing.
  3. Hello all! My contribution to this Group Build will be a Twin Otter from Yeti Airlines in Nepal. I was going to continue with a part-started Twin Otter where I had built an interior and modified the windscreen to get it's profile better, but I had forgotten that I had sanded off the strengthening plates to protect the fuselage from ice flying off the props - I had started it as a Maldivian Air Taxi. I have opted to do my 4th boxing instead, as an unmodified version, and will get the upgrade parts for the other Maldivian Air Taxi from Aerocraft Models, where they do upgrades for the tail planes, a new cockpit section with the correct windscreen, and propellers. If all goes well with this, I may well build that one too later in the GB. My brother was lucky enough to fly in one of the Yeti Airlines aircraft a few years ago, and thankfully he took some photographs of it! The kit I have is the Revell boxing, and it is one of four I had bought from Hobbycraft a few years ago, the final two were when they had a Black Friday deal at 50% off, so that worked out well. The parts are reasonably well moulded, but there are various sink marks, especially where the location pins/holes are, but at least all parts are still attached to the runners: The transfers are some I got from Paul @Parkes682Decals. I have used a couple of other sheets from him, and found they were very good indeed. They are quite translucent but worked well. There are enough markings to do two aircraft from the Yeti fleet: By sheers good luck, one of the options is for the very aircraft my bro flew in! Whether I do that or the other one depends on the question - do I splash out for a second upgrade set and then try and open up the doors and luggage bays, and put it in a diorama at Lukla airfield? Anyway, the main issue I can see is how to get the gold/green cheatlines done with that very narrow green stripe splitting the gold into two. I do have some very thin Aizu tape which may do the job. I hope to do another Matchbox kit later in the GB, but at the moment KingKit do not have anything much that interests me (except for the EE Lightnings), so I hope they get something else in soon! I cannot wait for this to start, it is all ready to go. All the best everyone with your builds, Ray
  4. Come 2018, I made a New Year's resolution, quietly to myself, that I would not buy or start another kit (ha!) until I had at least made an effort to finish one or two of the kits that I had started since I enlisted. But, along the trail of my 70+ years lies the wreckage of more broken resolutions than I could ever remember so no promises with this one. However, for all you Corsair aficionados, I will give it my best. I don't know what it is about these old Monogram kits but they have a particular appeal to me. The general consensus seems to be that most (but not all) are pretty accurate in outline and are only let down by their "toy-like features (the early ones) and raised panel lines. Perhaps, but I have built several over the years and even now I would pick one over the latest offerings from the Far East. Call me a masochist but..... So, moving on, I started this F4U-4B, box by Revell, last year so it falls within my promise to myself that I would model something that I had already started. I had started the build by adding detail to the sidewalls of the cockpit and scratched the rear bulkhead and seat. I am using the kit IP and tops of the consoles. Etching in the cockpit would probably look better but I'll put the cash towards purchase of resin wheels and a Quickboost engine. The kit cowling and the engine were moulded in one piece and the Cheshire Cat grin was the wrong shape. I thought I might be able to vac a replacement but after fooling around with a clay mould for a bit, I gave that up as a non-starter. I tried plunge moulding the lower lip of the grin but, although the shape looked ok, it was too thin to file and sand. The best result was obtained by baking a clay mould of the lip and then heating a piece of .060 styrene until it took the shape of the mould. A little fettling and fitting and it looks ok but it is too wide and I need to reduce the width by about two mil. The ring cowling is the reworked one from the Testor's F8F. I chucked it in the Tamiya drill and shaped it with a file and sandpaper. The "firewall" is one of the vacuum formed ring cowlings for the F8F that didn't quite measure up. The upper exhaust trough needed a little work so I press moulded a replacement and spliced it into the fuselage. So that's where I am at the moment. Back to the F8F for a bit and then I'll have another crack at fulfilling my resolution. Cheers Dennis
