  1. Hello all, Having read a few articles in recent magazines and having watched a few news clips of the recent strikes in Iraq/Syria, I've decided to refurb an old 1/48 Hasegawa F/A-18F build which was damaged in a move. This is how it sits at the minute: Bits: I was planning on using these decals and modelling it as a 'low-viz' jet either from 2009 (with bomb tally beneath the canopy) or from 2013: But i'd like to model it as a machine used recently in Iraq/Syria and I think i'm right in saying that only VFA-213 have used the F model in this recent round of air strikes. The reason I'd like to do this is because I came across a picture showing a jet carrying 5 GBU-38's and an AGM-65 Maverick along with two gas bags and thought it made a nice load-out (there are a few pictures of VFA-31 E models with this load in the most recent issue of Combat Aircraft magazine) Here is a picture of one of the squadrons colour jets. You can just make out the tails of the GBU-38's on the port wing VFA-213 So I may try and find some Black Lions decals for it or just go with my original idea of VFA-103. Dave
  2. Here's my latest completion! I've been restraining myself from buying the new Airfix Blenheim, because since I built it in the box scheme a few years back I have had the MPM kit sat on the shelf causing me dissatisfaction. I was chuffed with the model itself but made some poor colour choices for the DE/DG scheme, didn't weather to my satisfaction and didn't like the Munich crisis-era markings (which silvered annoyingly). So when I saw that Xtradecal had released a sheet for the new kit, the kit went straight into the paint-stripper without passing go! The option I went for was the colourful early scheme for 90 squadron, based at Bicester in 1938. This has local appeal for me as Bicester is slowly being rejuvenated only a few miles up the road from Oxford where I live this year. This joins my 2-seat Jaguar from living in Norwich last year, and my OUAS AZ Tiger Moth in celebrating my local airfields and units! One note of warning for anyone using this sheet (XK72202): the upperwing A1-type roundels supplied are too small, corresponding to 56-inch. Lots of photos show that the aircraft had large roundels that only just fit between the aileron hinge and leading edge. I estimated them as being 62-inch, and replaced directly from stock Xtradecal sheets. I'm not sure whether this mis-sizing applies only to the early scheme with A1, or whether the B-type roundels for later schemes are also out. The model is brush-painted as usual over Humbrol primer, colours are Revell (Night), Xtracrylix (Dark Green), and Humbrol (Dark Earth). I added a few extra scratchbuilt details I didn't first time around: the landing light aperture was cut out and glazed using a modified piece from a Hasegawa Beaufighter, and the extra little glazing panels in the turret were added using my spares box. I also rigged aerial wires, replaced the inaccurate PE rudder pedals, and drilled out the well for the retractable tailwheel featured on early Blenheim Is. Hope you enjoy this rejuvenation of a now-obsolete kit!
  3. Hello all, As I'm building another final cruise F-14 (see here), I thought I'd refurbish one of my earlier attempts at the venerable Hasegawa F-14 kit alongside it. Before: Wasn't bad in terms of build and paint, but my varnishing skills were crap and I think my all round skills have improved. You can see that the tail decals have disintegrated due to lack of a top coat. Stripped off all the parts ready for the paint to be removed. Amazingly, everything came off nicely! The bits: Aftermarket already on the kit: Aires Cockpit MAW covered GE-110's Master brass pitot tube Wolfpack Bombcat Update set Wolfpack GBU-38 Hasegawa GBU-12 & AIM-9 I'll be salvaging all of the above and adding a new set of Steel Beach FOD covers and of course, new decals: 164603 was the 711th out of 712 F-14's built and the last to fly with the US Navy. Delivered on May 29th, 1992, the jet served with VF-124 until 1993 when it was transferred to VF-2. It then flew with VF-213 from late 1997 and saw action in Operation Enduring Freedom as 'Blacklion 101.' After dropping 56 bombs and using the F-14's cannon in anger for the first time, it was transferred to VF-101 in 2002 then to VF-31 in late 2003 were it remained until it was flown to Republic Airport in Farmingdale New York, bringing an end to 36 years of USN F-14 operations. It is now displayed at the Northrop Grumman factory in Bethpage, New York. Dave
