  1. As I mentioned in the chat, I have a bunch of Italian fighters. If it's acceptable to the hosts, I will start a thread for all of them here and post them in the gallery singly if and when I get them finished. If not, let me know, and I will split the thread up accordingly. The two week extension will help! Anyhow, Sword and RS Models, and three Italeri kits that are ineligible for both the "Italian Job " (kits are too new) and "I feel deserted" (schemes are Mediterranean) GBs: The Sword comes in an incredible value double boxing. Here's the remainder of my first boxing plus another double: The first one built up nicely: I have also built the FROG and Supermodel versions: (The Sword is much, much better than either) The boxing has seven schemes; I am going to do two more from the box schemes and a light conversion back to an early one. The RS Model kit looks nice too; I just built their Caudron 714 and it was a fun build: I will get to the Italeri kits later (maybe!). (edit) Just remembered I've got a FROG Macchi 202 downstairs in the stash too!
  2. Hi all, here is my recently completed Zlin XIII Sports Plane by RS Model's mixed media kit in 1/72 for the 'Prototypes, Racers, Research, Record Breakers, Special Schemes mega GB', build log here: Stuart
  3. Fresh off the press is this Zlin XII 2-seater sports plane using RS Model's mixed media kit in 1/72 for the Prototypes, Racers, Research, Record Breakers, Special Schemes mega GB. Thanks for popping by. Stuart
  4. Hello again. Having now finished my F-100A Short-Tail Supersabre build over on the Century Series Group Build, I can now resume normal, or at least "no rush to complete" modeling. I decided to finally bite the bullet and start on one of those models that I had always wanted, a Lockheed XP-38. I understand that RS or someone had done a resin one in 1/72 several years back, but that was while I was out of modeling, and I missed out on grabbing one. I have been trying for years to figure out how to build one, and I think that finally, all the pieces have come together and it's time to give it a go. I looked around on-line for the earliest version of the P-38 that I could actually get into my hot little hands, in this case the RS Models Lockheed P-322 1 version. More info on this version can be found HERE. Of course with no turbochargers and both props rotating the same direction, more "stuff" was needed -- enter the old MPC boxing of the P-38F, which I seem to recall was a re-boxing of an old Airfix model -- could be wrong. Anyway, the culprits: I didn't feel too badly about finally gutting this old, rivet-studded kit, since I had already stolen the nose gear leg, main gear doors, and the tail mass balancers for an Anigrand XP-49 that I am also currently building, and those parts were missing when I got the kit from an earlier owner. There were also numerous warped parts, as is common on those old, early generations' resin kits. I will post up some pictures of that when it's done, but no build thread, as it is a fairly straight-forward build, problems mentioned above notwithstanding... Now, back to the XP-38. I begin with some of the easier tasks, modifying the front engine nacelles. Above left, the old P-38F intakes (marked "F") have to be filled, and the long bulges along the bottom sides (marked "X") have to be removed. Also, (not marked) the little exits at the lower rear of the nacelles must also be filled. Above right, the dirty deeds have been mostly accomplished. The item on the right is a shaped woodworker's sanding block (convex and concave), which when used with sandpaper wrapped round it, are perfect for sanding curved surfaces, especially tapered curved surfaces. I begin with a sanding stick to remove most of the material, and then use the sanding black for the final finishing. Helps keep one from flattening the curves. Since more sanding will be required on these when they are joined to the rest of the airplane, it behooves one to mark the location of the retractable "sugar scoop" air intakes, as I think they are called: After measuring the 3-view drawing, a piece of 5mm square masking tape was affixed in the correct location, and the sides and rear edges of the tape were scribed to clearly mark the locations. These scoops will be added later in the build, made up from thin plastic card. My the way, the only place I found the needed drawings was from an old Detail and Scale book, I think labeled the early versions volume 2, or something like that. Would you believe that even though I had it in my hot little hands a few days ago, I now cannot find it?!! Did I also mention that I hate getting old...? Anyway, if anyone out there has a copy of the subject book and can mention the correct name of the book, I would appreciate their doing so, as I'm sure would many others. The drawings simply say XP-38 1/72 scale five view drawings copyright by Lloyd S Jones. Fortunately, I had scanned copies years ago, in anticipation of this very project, so I had them to hand. Next up, adding turbochargers to the P-322 1. Not only do the turbochargers have to be added, but they also have to be reversed, front to rear. I originally had envision simply carving out the correct shapes into the top of the booms, and adding plastic card for the bottoms. However, everything in the turbochargers (technically "turbo-superchargers", but I'm lazy) cutouts are tapered every which a' way, so total replacement/implant was the way I decided to go: Anyway, starting from a point right at the end of the extended upper "flap" line on the wing, the tops of the nacelles are razor sawed straight across the booms (marked "X"). The nacelles aft of this line will be cut off. MPC wing is shown only for comparison. Hopefully, this will be enough to whet your whistle enough to tag along for the ride. See you later, Ed
  5. RS model 1:72 Dornier Do17P. The camouflage was my own mix of Mr.Color/Gunze lacquer paints. Nanond
  6. Hi! Here I present my first finish of 2019. RS model 1/72 Curtiss Hawk II kit, completed as Thai air force fighter during Franco-Thai War 1940. Originally from Thailand myself, this is my second Thai aircraft. A bit about Hawk II. In Thai service it was known as type 18 or fighter number 9 (Our latest Grippen is only fighter number 20. Apparently we didn't have too many types in our history). Only 12 of of Hawk II were purchased because the air force chose to adopted Hawk III type (fighter number 10) as its main fighter. The record is very limited on the use of Hawk II. Most only mention Hawk-type. As far as I know, there is no photo of Hawk II in camouflage. I don't know how long it survived in service but, since Thai had facility to produce and maintain a fleet of Hawk III, it is reasonable to assume they were able to keep the older brother in service too. The kit is quite nice for its kind. It went together without much problem. I modified bulges on both side of fuselage according the photos of Thai Hawk II. The bulge on the starboard side is quite substantial. The telescopic gun sight in the kit was broken, so I changed to ring and bead type common on Thai Hawk III. Cheers! Nanond
  7. I had a hard choice between many ideas for this GB, so I have picked a quite simple model in order to finish it in time... I am going to make a Miles Magister from Estonian Õhukaitse (Air Defence), Aviaton Regiment, 3. lennuväedivisjon (3rd Aviaton Division), Tallinn, 1938-1940. It was single aircraft of this type acquired by Estonia. It was Miles M.14A , construction number 639, equipped with 130 h.p. De Havilland Gipsy Major Mk I engine, delivered in 1938 and given Estonian number "159". In Estonia all aircraft during inter-war period were numbered consecutively, so it was 159th Estonian aircraft. I didn't found out why exactly this one was purchased, but around that time Estonian aviation industry started to producing similar design, PTO-4, so maybe there were no need for more. I found those information on Estonian forum http://www.militaar.net During it service in 1939 it participated with two mentioned above PTO-4's in trip to Latvia. In 1940 Estonia was "asked" to join USSR, so service of Magister in Estonia was quite short. Apparently Miles Magister, maybe that one, served later in Sonderstaffel Buschmann. It was a coastal patrol unit formed sometime on 12 February 1942 around a core of Estonian volunteers following the German occupation of the Baltic States. The unit was under the command of an ethnic German from Tallin; Oberleutnant Gerhard Buschmann. Oh, and photo of unassembled model.
  8. For those who have mentioned elsewhere that they desire a 1/72 Yak-11, here's something from the latest Hannants future releases e-mail: http://www.hannants.co.uk/product/RSMI92166 John
