As There is still a few weeks left to run in this group build I thought I would do another build. From the stash I have retrieved the 1/72nd Amodel kit of the Piasecki HUP Retriever. I am going to build it as one of the three Canadian helicopters of this type and using decals from Print Scale. The Retriever was designed to a USN requirement for a rescue and communication helicopter for use on aircraft carriers and ships. A prototype first flew in 1949 and entered service in 1951. There were four variants. The HUP1 had horizontal stabilisers on the tail, which were deleted on the HUP2 as this was fitted with an autopilot. Some were built for antisubmarine use, but apparently saw little use in this role. The HUP3 was similar to the 2, with more powerful engines and some were converted (including the three Canadian ones) from a US Army version called the UH25 Mule. the UH25 was to be used as a light transport and communications helicopter, but was found not to be rugged enough for Army use. The A model kit is moulded in a hard white plastic with little flash and some reasonable detail Some parts like the engine support look quite delicate and will be visible through the air intakes on the spine. As moulded only the upper set are open and photos vary as to whether the lower set of intakes are open are not. The photos of the aircraft I am building so them to be open and it is straightforward to open them up as there position is indicated on the fuselage halves by engraved lines. Nice to build a kit that can be stuck together with styrene cement.

Im looking for photo(s) of Fairey Firefly T.1 or T.2 in Canadian Navy markings. In an ancient Scale Aircraft Modeller (vol.2, #3) there is published one photo of TG*X, with a 'D' type roundel. It is illustrated in the article as MB 443, with underwing codes VG-TGX, and 'C1' roundels. In a very early IPMS Canada magazine, a drawing of MB 445 is to be found, no codes, but carrying early Canadian roundels with a maple leaf centre. I suspect that Leo Pettipas' book on Canadian Fireflies may have something, but my copy has disappeared. Similarly, there may have been something in a more recent Random Thoughts, but nothing to be found in my collection. Any Firefly experts out there with what I seek? Much obliged if you could contact me on-line. Styreno

Greetings all this will be my number 2 build for this GB. It was going to be a number 1 but got trumped by my Seaking. So here we have the A-Model Piasecki Hup 2/3. I will be opting for a Hup 3 version of the Canadian Navy. I researched the kit and it seems a bit tricky in places but builds into a nice little kit (hopefully). The only pick up was the front canopy which is a bit flat, there is a vac form available but to ship it to Canada will cost around a Tenner, so I will make do! The kit has a nice bit of detail about it, even if it is a bit rough around the edges. So here are the sprue shots Some half decent engine and internal mouldings and more of the engine/transmission detail. So another all poised for the go, bring on tomorrow Bob
