  1. In the meantime I am finishing another 2 WRC delta, I started thinking about my next project. I write a premise: my good friend model maker Riccardo tried to take me on the "right" way of the hystoric racing. The idea would have been a LeMans (the 4H race in the 24) # 62 driven by Lennep with an NA engine and Martini livery ..... not to be confused with the Turbo # 46 always used by Lennep, always at LeMans, always Martini but at 24H race. Beautiful cars, but that don't make “fall in love” like an mp4/4 or a Delta. If I continue to model my historical subjects it will be the F1, the WRC and some LeMans .... the rest I like custom or tuning like my Golf GTI My inspiration starts from a Porsche seen live at Woerthersee 2013 .... an awesome USA 964: it is practically original, just very low (airride) and a rotiform rims. The idea of my Porsche is based on this: a car with original shapes (practically a sleeper .... if a sleeper can be defined as a Porsche) "slammed" on the ground, 4 rims but with a turbo engine and therefore probably with the rear open bumper and with turbo clearly visible just like on the Lennep RSR in 24H Lemans Now I’m studying the various engines between the various 935 of 76 and 79; there will be a lot to work and it will not be easy ... I don't even know if I will be able. I have the first 21 double issues with the possibility of understanding how difficult it will be to move the cooling fan horizontally The biggest problems will be: -Exhaust manifolds -Wastegate -Turbo intake -alternator -Intercooler position The rest will be the classic two-seater, internally emptied, rollcage and the usual mix of carbon, airride and bbs rims We will see that “salade” will emerge from it.
  2. This is Fujimi’s model of the Koenig Specials Porsche 911 Biturbo (kit #12004 / RS-04). I built this completely out-of-the-box, using Tamiya’s TS-95 Pure Metallic Red over Tamiya Pink primer and adding home-made number plates. Though simple, or maybe due to this, the build was easy and pleasurable. Something a little different on the shelf and soon to be joined by the Koenig Specials Porsche 928 S4. For some reason a certain song by Sir Mix-a-Lot keeps coming to mind…. Grant.
  3. I know what you've all been thinking. All this sci-fi stuff is all well and good, but when are we going to see some Scandi Noir? Well I'll oblige! I recently binge-watched the Danish/Swedish noir drama Bron/Broen, aka The Bridge. The Swedish protagonist Saga Noren drives a rather lovely 1970s Porsche 911S in an unusual olive green-mustardy colour. I can't find a photo that I can be sure I can post, but here's a youtube video showing the star of the show auctioning the car a year or two ago: I love this car - whilst cars aren't my usual thing (I probably last made a model car about 35 years ago) I had to build this one. Somehow I didn't feel the same pull to the battered people carrier driven by her Danish counterpart Martin Rohde! The car in question is a 911S from the late 70s. Fujimi does a 1/24 1969 911S which is the right body shape but some of the details aren't right for this particular car - mainly the bumpers, but a few other things like the wing mirrors are differently. However they also do a 1/24 1980s Carrera which is the wrong body shape (the flared wheel arches stand out as the main difference) but has all the other details needed. So a bit of kit bashing is in order. Here's the box shot of the 911S kit: And here are the bodies of the two kits side by side - the 911S is on the left: In the top photo you can see that the front wheel arch extends a bit further down on the 911S than the Carrera - this is due to the bulkier bumper on the Carrera - and I need to trim it back to match the profile of the Carrera so the bumper will fit. Similarly the bonnet needs to have the Carrera's profile and the simplest thing to do here seems to be to cut out the two bonnets and stick the Carrera's bonnet on the 911S. Then the bulkier sills on the sides of the Carrera need to be transplanted onto the 911S. So here's where I'm up to - I've transplanted the bonnet, removed the excess plastic from the wheel arch, and removed the sills ready to graft on the parts from the Carrera: cheers Julian
  4. My wife was brought up in Germany, close to Stuttgart, she also loves orange cars, so... Tamiya's excellent 911/996 GT3 straight from the box and paint mixed by my favourite Mk.I eyeball method (X6 Orange with 'a few drops' of XF15 Flesh). One coat of 'Pearl' clear and two caots of TS13 Clear, all polished with Tamiya three-part compounds (no wax yet). Interior is a typical turn-of-the-century two-tone medium grey and dark blue-grey. Only thing on the finished thing that didn't come in the box is the carbon fibre roof decal by a Korean company 'Ka-Models' which I got through BNA Models in Oz. Not much else to say except that my kit came with a severely deformed left side A Pillar which threw-out the alignment of the front windscreen. Great kit and a very easy build as Tamiya always seem to be. As ever thanks for taking the time to look and / or comment. Please feel free to comment, question or rage-away. Next a 2011 997 GT3R then some aircraft builds, AFN Ian.
