  1. Bought in 19something and after it had been gathering dust for ages, I finally was in the mood and found the time to build this charming Matchbox kit. The WIP can be found here, I am not entirely satisfied with the result, but I settle for it. Feel free to post some comments, I will add them to my long list of 'notes to self', ahem. Cheers, Rob
  2. Welcome to my second WIP! Many, many moons ago I came across this classic Matchbox kit in a local shop, and although my interest in scale modelling was declining I couldn't resist buying it. RAF Phantoms were my all-time favourite jets and look at the prize! Only 18.95 guilders, which equals by the time the euro was introduced 18.95 / 2.20 = € 8.61! An absolute bargain. The box had been gathering dust on a shelf ever since, but when I took up scale modelling again, about three years ago, I decided to start with this kit. I remembered Matchbox kits were pretty easy to build, so this one seemed a good start to renew my scale modelling skills. The next step was finding out how to configure the plane. One of the reasons I left scale modelling was my increasing interest in seeing military aircraft 'in the wild', and one of my favourite airbases to visit was RAF Wildenrath. By that time it was home to 19 and 92 Squadron (Phantom FGR.2) and 60 Squadron (Pembroke C.1). And 25 Squadron with Bloodhound missiles, yes. I had no special feelings about 6, 41 and 892 Squadron like the kit suggests, and I chose to configure this kit as XV430/C of 19 Squadron, like I photographed it on October 19 1982 during its approach of the eastern threshold: So far the introduction of what and why, up next is my progress thus far. Cheers, Rob
  3. Phantom FGR.2s at Red Flag 90-1, Nellis AFB, October 1989. XV410 56 Squadron XV411 19 Squadron XV420 56 Squadron XV429 56 Squadron XV430 19 Squadron XV439 92 Squadron XV478 56 Squadron XV480 56 Squadron Herk provided logistic support... XV200 XV206 Thanks for looking, Sven
  4. Dear all, I am about to build the Airfix 1:72 Phantom FGR.2 scale model, but after studying the color schemes I am a bit puzzled. For the No.1435 Flight version (1991), it reads Barley Grey BS 381C.626 (equals Humbrol 167 apparently) is needed for fuselage and wing upper sides. However, according to color schemes by Model Decal and AirDOC, this should be Barley Grey BS 4800.118.21. Now, I want my model to represent XV430/C of 19 squadron (1982), so is the 'Falklands grey' actually different from the 'RAFG grey'? And if so, can anyone give me correct paint code for BS 4800.118.21 (preferably Humbrol)? Thanks in advance, Rob
  5. Good morning all Does anyone know where I can get hold of one of these sets of markings for phamous phighter squadrons in 1/48 please? It doesn't have to be these specific aircraft in terms of serials, just the unit markings. I tried Hannants and RAM and eBay but to no avail.
  6. Already have one build on this GB, this will be my second to be started very soon. I have had this Hasegawa 1/48 Phantom FGR.2 kit #P16 in the stash for a few years now, I purchased it in good faith as a bulk buy of eleven kits a while back however unbeknown to me many parts were missing so I used the cockpit section in an old ESCI kit (which worked out very well) and I was going to break this up for parts. However, recently one of these sold on eBay for over £60 so I reconsidered my options. I have never built an RAF Phantom FGR.2 in this scale and I would rather like to build a RAF Germany 92 Squadron machine in the old grey/green camouflage scheme which was extent until at least 1985. Here is the kit: The parts that are missing are the complete cockpit and seats, stabilators, 1 x main undercarriage leg, all undercarriage doors, and air brakes. However I do have many parts from a broken up Revell F-4C/D, an ancient Italeri F-4G as well as the duplicate parts supplied in the new Academy F-4B and F-4C kits so I am confident I can use these to build something reasonable. After some hesitation I decided to replace the complete missing cockpit with the True Details F-4J Phantom II cockpit detail set. No, it isn't an FGR.2 however at £9.99 from the Big H it is close enough for me. I have never made a replacement cockpit before so could be fun to try. Additionally I did purchase the MIG UK Aircraft Colours Set 'From 50's to Present' a while back and I would like to give these a try. And also some excellent reference material... Michael
