  1. Here's one I finished recently. Nice underrated kit with Xtradecal decals: 20191230_172241 by bryn robinson, on Flickr 20191230_172223 by bryn robinson, on Flickr 20191230_172137 by bryn robinson, on Flickr 20191230_172128 by bryn robinson, on Flickr 20191230_172107 by bryn robinson, on Flickr
  2. Hi all This is my latest model finished. P-40C 33RD PURSUIT SQUADRON USA, 1941 Model improved with full scratch built interior, add new wheels from my spare parts box. Added new machine guns and new pitot from syringe needles. Painted mostly using Tamiya and Gunze aqueous Hobby Colours acrylics. Camouflage: Undersurfaces Grey FS 36440 = Tamiya XF-80 overall plus added a few drops of white XF-2 for highlights. Upper-surfaces US Olive Drab FS 34087 = Gunze H52 overall plus added a few drops of white H1 for highlights. Decals: FCM Decals 72-22 P-40 Galore plus spares for propeller's stencils. I had issues with the upper wing decals when trying to make them to conform to kit's surface, tried Gunze's Mr Marker Fit and it almost dissolved the decal completely. I had to try to fix as best as I could but didn't end perfect as I intended. Conclusion: Overall the kit is very basic and have some major mistakes. It's aimed for very beginner modellers. Serious modellers should by the Airfix new tool. PS: After looking the photos I've noticed I've missed the rear windows, it's now been fixed. Cheers! PS: Critics and comments are always very welcomed!
  3. Hey everyone, after some time i had just a bit of time to work on some kits again, so i decided to pick Airfix 1/72 P-40C and build it straight OOB. Only additions are rivets, wires on U/C and antena wires, which i managed to break like 10 times during taking the shots and my nerves were not strong enough in the end, so the wires are left a bit loose.. At first i wanted realy quick build, so the cockpit was quickly painted, washed and thats all.. As i changed my mind during the build and wanted to play a bit with the surface, the result is, the cockpit is now quite shiny compared to rest of the build. Well, happens. Also i managed to break one of the gun barrels during weathering Few shots from the build (there was no WIP this time on BM, because i did not have that much time) - i was using the hairspray technique, so silver base, hairspray, zinc chromate yellow primer (mix of ZCY + drop of green, both gunze), chipping where i wanted some later chips straight down to the bare metal. Next step was sealing all this with coat of varnish - do not do the same mistake as me and do NOT chose gloss varnish.. the next layer of hairspray/chipping fluid wont hold good enough on it and you llhave problems with spraying the next paint layers.. However, once the varnish was on and dried, i did apply layer of mig/ammo chipping fluid, followed with the camo paints - grey and green gunze (green was mix of US interrior green, RAF green and drop of ZCY), brown tamiya (mix of redbrown and dark yellow), airbrushed free hand, only the bottom/top line was done using tamiya tape, as i ran out of blue-tac. After that i did the chipping, using scalpel, brush and for the rivets enhancing i used waterproof sandpaper, pushing very gently on it. I then sealed this all with gloss varnish, for the next steps. Weathering was done as usualy, wash (top medium brown, bottom storm grey, both from ammo RAF PLW set), very gentle oil paints fading, to not destroy the chipping and next i did try pigments to give it dusty look (mix of dust, sand and earth pigments), mig dust fluid for the white-ish mark on fuselage behind cockpit (under the fuel caps), fresh oil leaks by ammo and brown/black oil paints for touches here and there. Exhaust staining is done by black and grey pigments. Exhausts weathering was done in few steps - metal base, followed by few washes of warious rust colours, next some brown and grey pigments dusting. I was not happy with that, so i gently drybrushed some dark steel paint here and there. Still not where i wanted to be, but i did not want to screwit even more Few images from the build here then - the next shots are after the paint job, before weathering. And here she is finished. I m sorry, the photos are a bit blurry and dark, i cannt make better with phone.. guess i ll have to write letter to Santa as the xmass are comming... As i said, one gun barrel was broken during weathering and the antenna wire is a bit loose, because i repeaired it so many times, the heat did not want to strain it anymore Thanks for watching guys and any tips or comments are welcome
  4. P-40B/C Resin Upgrades 1:72 Quickboost by Aires for the Airfix Kit The new Airfix P40 Hawk has quickly established itself as a great kit, building on the reputation that Airfix are developing for their newer kits. If you're looking to take it further, then there is a whole range of aftermarket accessories becoming available. The P40 served in many different theatres and this makes it such an interesting aircraft to model due to the wide range of schemes that you can choose from as the decal range becomes available. QB 72 364 Propeller with Alignment Tool The first set here is a replacement propeller. Whilst the kit propeller certainly isn't bad, the limitations of injection moulding are not a problem here due to the resin manufacturing process. The propeller blades are individually cast and very thin giving a more accurate scale representation. The hub is also nicely moulded. This will need the sprue sanding off the rear face before fitting to the kit. A great feature is the prop assembly tool to make lining the blades up consistent as you attach them. QB 72 361 P-40B Exhaust The exhausts are beautifully hollowed out which really improve the appearance of any kit. They are supplied as direct replacements for the kit parts, so other than cutting them off the sprue, no additional work is required. QB 72 374 P-40B/C Exhaust & Damper Cooler Another option if you're looking to upgrade the exhausts is this set. Again, beautifully crafted exhausts with hollowed ends although these vary slightly in being marginally more swept back at the tips compared to the previous set. The radiator gills are very thin and will give an alternative option to using photo etch to get scale accuracy under the engine cowling. QB 72 375 P-40B/C Gun Barrels These are a very fine set of barrel upgrades. Getting this level of finesse from injection moulding just isn't possible, so these are most welcome. As the kit parts are moulded into the wing, removing them and drilling location holes will be necessary so a fine drill bit of approximately 1mm will be necessary QB 72 376 P-40B/C Undercarriage Covers Main and tail wheel doors are catered for in this set. The kit parts are somewhat chunky so these will give the undercarriage area a real sharpen up. The parts are very delicate so care should be taken removing them from the sprues. Further more, unlike the kit parts, there are no tabs to locate them, so delicate fitment is necessary, but well worth it. Conclusion These fine sets offer the already good Airfix kit a significant enhancement. If like me, you enjoy modelling on this scale, getting that extra bit of accuracy and detail is important to make it look less toy like and more like a scale replica. The precision in the sets just can't be achieved by plastic injection moulding technology so I'll certainly be using these when I build mine.
