  1. I have finally arrived home after a refreshing and very fun trip to Hungary. Back to the workbench! I've decided to attempt more speedbuilds and I've definitely caught a helicopter fever because this is my third helicopter in a row! (1st was Sea King, 2nd was Merlin). Done quite a lot today considering the age of this kit (1976 tool), the fit is surprisingly good but there are a lot of gaps. I'm aware the seats are inaccurate but the navy lynx version of the seats airfix provided were shocking so I decided to go with the normal version. Seatbelts were added later. It never really struck me just how small the lynx is until now, quite awesome! As I'm writing this, I'm currently filling and sanding everything. Shouldn't take too long hopefully, school starts again on Wednesday!
  2. Hello all; Here’s my recently completed Lancaster, the RAAF’s 460 Squadron G-George. The WIP thread is from the current GB and is here; I must say I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would and a lot of my preconceived ideas and prejudices about older tooling kits were knocked down. Here’s a few pics of how he turned out, there’s more about the build as well as George itself on my site. Cheers.
  3. Having finished the Hellcat, it’s time for my contribution to this group build. Honest! I’d already decided on the RAAF’s Lancaster G-George, when I saw it was my lucky day with a master builder such as @Mancunian airman was also building the same kit and I could ride his coattails for mine. It was, therefore, the least I could do when he asked about some details on the preserved G-George at the AWM to go take some photos. The light in the ANZAC Hall is shockingly difficult to photograph in, but I’m quite happy with how they came out. Here’s a selection of the details requested; I have more and will add to these if someone is looking for something specific. These are also mostly raw, full sized and unprocessed, I can make them better when I get home to the PC if it will help anyone. A couple of notes and a question; the wheels are different, the port wheel hub outboard side is black, the starboard outboard side is metal. Inboard both are the same. The swastikas on the props are tiny in real life, a red splotch will likely have to suffice in this scale. Are those strengthening ribs over the outboard engines standard? Hope some of that helps, it’ll help me anyway :j
  4. Afternoon all, My second build for the GB will be an 'in-flight' S.50 using: I hope to do the aircraft depicted carrying AS-30 training rounds, purely because I like the aircraft scheme and the black and white stripes on the missiles. I have some Alley Cat resin bits on order for the aircraft, they also do a set of Nord Aviation AS-30 missiles and pylons but I think that the Martel missiles still supplied in the Airfix kit and the spares I have from an earlier Tornado build will do as a basis for creating the AS-30s with some judicious cutting, sanding and general fettling. Cheers, Mark.
  5. I started this around a year ago but for some reason just lost interest in it. So i'm hoping posting it on here will gee me up and get it finished. I've not got any in progress pics of the build but didn't encounter any problems with it, just plenty of dry fitting and taking your time is the trick with these kits. This is where i'd got to up till today. With careful work the wing root gun covers fit perfectly. National markings are sprayed on using Top Notch masks, codes and unit badge are from Owl. I wasn't veey happy with the fuselage mottling so tweaked it a bit amd applied the all important exhaust staining. Painted using Mr Paint. Weathered with oils. I've got some Master gun barrels to use and also some Brassin wheels. I've also got to try and find a couple rather important parts, namely the prop and spinner!!! Tim.
  6. Inspired by Alpha Delta 201's excellent rendition and kind encouragement, I decided to make my second Britmodeller build J.B. Nicolson VC's Mk1 Hawker Hurricane G-NA. The kit was Airfix's old-tool Mk.1, from their "V.C. Icons" boxing. GN-A was a significant aircraft, being the 'plane in which Flight Lieutenant Nicolson won the only Battle of Britain Victoria Cross and Fighter Command's only VC of the war, an exploit described in the following extract: Air Ministry, 15 November 1940. The KING has been graciously pleased to confer the Victoria Cross on the undermentioned officer in recognition of most conspicuous bravery : Flight Lieutenant James Brindley NICOLSON (39329) No. 249 Squadron. During an engagement with the enemy near Southampton on 16th August 1940, Flight Lieutenant Nicolson's aircraft was hit by four cannon shells, two of which wounded him whilst another set fire to the gravity tank. When about to abandon his aircraft owing to flames in the cockpit he sighted an enemy fighter. This he attacked and shot down, although as a result of staying in his burning aircraft he sustained serious burns to his hands, face, neck and legs. Flight Lieutenant Nicolson has always displayed great enthusiasm for air fighting and this incident shows that he possesses courage and determination of a high order. By continuing to engage the enemy after he had been wounded and his aircraft set on fire, he displayed exceptional gallantry and disregard for the safety of his own life. Unfortunately Wing Commander Nicolson did not survive the war. For more on his career see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Brindley_Nicolson As a build it was pleasant and uncomplicated and it came out looking quite like a Hurricane to my eyes, which is the main thing! Although not really a scratchbuilder by inclination, I was nonetheless moved to do some fairly rudimentary, impressionistic (and now completely invisible) cockpit detailing, put in a cockpit floor to fill the gaping void which would otherwise have been visible through the wheel-wells, and cobble together a pitot tube and a foot stirrup (the latter being made out of a twist of picture wire.) I also had another go at weathering with a combination of dark washes and silver paint on the leading edges, which were then overpainted with some gaps to simulate chipping/flaking. I also tried to do some exhaust staining, which I think was slightly more successful. My painting still leaves something to be desired, though, and I *very* swiftly regretted forgetting to mask-off the cockpit canopy before I sprayed-on the varnish...
