  1. Hailing from the land of the LNER and LMS and now living in the former territory of the GWR, I never got round to running much Southern Railway/Region motive power back in the period when I had a model railway 30+ years ago. I did have a BR Battle of Britain Pacific, and an SR King Arthur but that was as far as I got before family pressures meant the whole lot ended up in the loft, but about 20 years ago for some reason, perhaps alcohol driven, I picked up the Dapol kits of a West Country and a couple of Schools I also bought various decs, name plates and the like, but the builds never went very far until the KUTA a couple of years ago when I completed somewhat updated versions of both classes, and made a start on the second Schools before I ran out of time. This is what the completed Schools looks like- As you can see I finished it in Oliver Bullied's early pre-war Malachite green and the kit comes with the wide chimney for the Le Maitre multiple blastpipes. However, the second Schools was to be finished as originally built by the previous Chief Engineer, Maunsell which means a different chimney and paint scheme. With luck I should be able to finally get it finished this time round, assuming I have not lost any of the parts - it should look something like this. Pete
  2. Hi all, One of two projects for this GB that I actually started a week or two ago - I've seen someone else do the same sort of thing with a 9F on the exhibition circuit, so I can't claim that it's an original subject, but it should be an interesting exercise for me. For our more remotely located members who may not know the story, one Dai Woodham owned a scrapyard at Barry Island in Wales. When BR finally stopped steam operations in 1968, the locomotives were sold off for scrap, Mr Woodham bought a goodly number to break up, but for some reason, didn't break the engines up straight away. This fleet of engines now form a large proportion of the available steam locomotives on preserved and heritage lines up and down the country. Some of them were in a right old state by the time they'd been rescued though, and it is to the credit of all those enthusiasts who have spent time and money in their restoration and upkeep. So, the model will represent a 9F, quietly dissolving in a siding somewhere, awaiting salvation, or further cannibalisation to keep one of its sisters going. I'm using the Kitmaster/Airfix/Dapol kit and will be hacking bits off it, painting and then weathering/rusting. Don't know why, but I can't find the picture of the opened bag, so here's one of the chassis partially completed. Sinkmarks on the wheel centres have been filled. Footplate/bottom of boiler have had chunks removed. Top half of boiler has had moulded on handrails and various steam pipes removed - Brass handrails will be installed as the project progresses. Will hopefully catch up tomorrow. IanJ
  3. Seeing John's @nimrod54 build of his BR Mogul reminded me that I have 3 stalled loco kits that were originally produced many years ago by Rosebud Kitmaster, later known as just Kitmaster. The moulds were then taken over by Airfix who produced part of the range for a good few years, before passing them on to Dave and Polly at Dapol, which is where I got mine from quite a while back. My model railway layout was packed away sometime in the 1990's together with about 60 locos and an awful lot of rolling stock, but from time to time I get the urge to re-visit it. About 3 years ago I got out my Hornby LNER Silver Fox A4 Pacific, my Airfix Large Praire and my Bachman V2 and finally got round to re-spraying them in the correct colours and replacing the rather basic markings. At the same time, and whilst I was in the mood, I made a start on 2 Dapol Schools and a West Country/Battle of Britain. I got the markings together with cast plates etc and then something distracted me so I put them aside and forgot about them - this is how the Schools looked at the time. I removed the horrible moulded handrails and replaced them, and on the one nearest the camera I also replaced the later large "Lemaitre" chimney that Oliver Bullied fitted to a number of them with Maunsell's original smaller King Arthur type chimney with the lip at the front - I believe it is called a Capuchon. The one at the back is more advanced as I have started putting on the lining which I bought from Fox Transfers, which could make things tricky. There are a number of reasons why I might not actually finish both of them - not least the fact that by now some of the parts might be missing. More difficult is the paintwork on the rear one as I decided I wanted it in the early pre-war version of Bullied's "Malachite" which is a blue green colour and I was never able to find any ready mixed, so I mixed my own. I thought I had painted everything, but now find I will need to do some touching up and as the paint I mixed has dried out years ago, that could be a problem. I therefore will probably have to completely repaint it with a new version which obviously means a hairy stick to get round the decs! The earlier version is in the lighter of Maunsells's olive greens of which I have several tins so that should not be a problem. However the LNER style white/black/white Pressfix lining I have is very old and may not work, ditto the Southern Railway numbers/lettering. I maybe can get replacements, but this build may not happen before the deadline - maybe I should do the Bullied "light pacific" instead as I have both paint and markings - we will see. I will probably potter about with them in between building planes as a sort of light relief. Don't hold your breath! Pete
  4. Well, I’ll start by saying that if you are reading this at some point in the future – I’d better set the scene. It’s Easter Monday 2020 – a bank holiday – the sun is shining & all should be well with the world. But it isn’t - the world is in the grips of the global corona virus pandemic and Britain, like many countries is in ‘lock down’. So I’ve been isolating with SWMBO for three weeks now – doing our bit to STAY HOME / PROTECT THE NHS / SAVE LIVES. In normal times I’m sure that a three week break would have seen me knocking out a good few kits – what else is there to do… Life isn’t that simple though – for with my usual knack of making a bad situation worse – I managed to break my ribs right at the beginning of all this. That left me propped up in a chair for almost two weeks, drifting in & out of consciousness – racked with pain. In the last week I’ve actually made it up to bed at night – but I haven’t had any motivation to sit at the bench & butcher some plastic. That has to stop!!! So yesterday I took a good long look through the stash – for something simple to build. Something easy, something almost ‘disposable’, just something to get me going again. In the end I found a couple of farm buildings that I picked up when my LMS was closing down a couple of years back. From memory they were £6 each – but after a 25% sales discount I think I paid about £4.50 each for them. So, may I present a couple of WILLS KITS – distributed by PECO… The Stone & Timber Barn & The Village Forge They are designed for railway modellers & come in at OO/HO scale – making them around 1/76 or 1/72 – which make them perfect accessories for my ‘toy army’.
  5. Here is my build of the Dapol OO/HO Stephenson's Rocket (C046) I built the Airfix version in the Seventies and rather than build the one I have in my stash, I bought a Dapol version for a "just for fun" build. As turned out, it was fun! Dave
