  1. After the OK from @Enzo the Magnificent to include further stages of my Never Ending Diorama in KUTA I thought I would start with a shelf of shame item. These should be part of a street scene in the aftermath of an air raid. The two buildings were given to me and still show some of the original painting. Apart from removing the garage on the right hand building and demolishing part of the other one - little work has been carried out.
  2. Here is my second (or is it second and third) entry in this GB, as it is a bit more mainstream than my first. Encouraging to see a number of threads started for model railways so my additions are: Both of these will have a place in my WW2 themed never ending diorama, and before the end of this GB I might add couple more. The brick wagons were built to carry bricks from the Fletton brickworks in Peterborough to KIngs Cross goods yard, but during WW2 they were repurposed to carry rubble from the blitzed areas of London to provide hard core for the many airfields being built at the time. Tom understand the purpose of the trestle wagon you need to know about "loading gauge". Many people know about four foot, eight and a half inches as the UK gauge but what is more important is the overall loading gauge set by the edges of platforms, the size of bridges and tunnels etc. This gives the space in which all items carried on the railway had to fit. Those who know the London Underground will appreciate this, all the underground is 4' 8." inch gauge but the trains on the pure tube lines are much smaller than those on the Circle, Metropolitan and District lines - they have different gauges, both of which are smaller than the general main line gauge. This site explain it better than I have https://www.igg.org.uk/rail/2-track/02track3.htm Simple geometry says that the diagonal across a rectangle is longer than either the height or width, the trestle wagon makes use of this fact, which meant that items such as aircraft propellers could be carried by train. More commonly items such as glass plate might have been seen on them.
  3. This is the story of building a model tramway... It starts of with the dangers of looking on eBay... Was looking for a bit of colour to go with my model tanks and saw in one of the random search results a model tram...so I searched for model trams. They can be expensive to motorise (£50+) but one seller was making a kit for £12 and I thought I could have a go at that...and so it began. Having only a 2 metre shelf x 25cm there was not of room to play, but people have made 00 gauge shunting layouts smaller so I could work with it, albeit some compromises. I decided though that this would be portable and had to fit in my (small) car. Here's the initial planning....
  4. As the Fish wagons are well on the way to being constructed, there should be time to construct a building to receive them. So my second build is the Scalescenes Small Goods Store, this one of their sampler kits that are available for free on their web site. https://scalescenes.com/product/r002-small-goods-store/ As with all Scalescenes kits you have to print them and attach the prints to card. This is a simple kit and only required a couple of sheets of 1mm card and half a sheet of thin card, the odd bits on the right are because I was reusing some card from a previous build in the Salty Sea Dog GB. Work should start tomorrow while I am waiting for paint to dry on the wagons.
  5. No - I have not entered this into the wrong thread Although Exercise Meteor remains my main project, with the proposed Railways GB having reached the November Bunfight I thought that I would see if I could get a short project through from start to completion before the end of the voting. Over the last decade or so I have build up a collection of OO gauge rolling stock for three projects: A second world war layout - now Operation Meteor A military railway - now aborted and the stock will be up for disposal The railways I remember - North & East London in the late 1950's - early 1960's - this project Building the Airfix Vintage DH Heron was the catalyst for the layout, but it will be a what-if with a feasible back story. All I am going to reveal in this initial post is that it will be a (so called) shelf layout and with digital control.
  6. As work started today on a room over a cart-lodge that will be able to contain the first (and probably last) permanent model railway layout I have been able to build. I thought I would start a thread on this. This will be a long term project but I would like to complete it by the end of 2024. For many years it has been my ambition to construct with a second world war theme. My thoughts have been through many iterations but I have not decided on a very specific time and location. This is based around the following: The Operations Record Book of 512 Squadron contains the following entry “Exercise Meteor” Instructions were received on the 20th March that the squadron would move up to R.A.F. Station Gosfield to carry out exercise “Meteor”. Twenty-four aircraft and crews were to be provided plus 5 reserve crews. Squadron was to be screen for Routine Air Transport commitments as from p.m. on the 21st March 1945. The lines below then appear Exercise "Meteor" however never materialised, and it would appear that is was purely a security blind for the airborne operation across the Rhine, this operation being called "Varsity". That references RAF Gosfield but many of the airfields in Essex that had been vacated by the US 9th Airforce we also brought back into use for operation Varsity, The crossing of the Rhine also required support from the heavy bombers of the 8th Airforce based at RAF Ridgewell and bases in Suffolk. The layout should reflect the activity on both road and rail. As far as possible the layout will reflect the position around March 1945 I will be looking to convey an impression about what was taking place rather than a fully accurate representation. As to the location – I am looking towards the centrepiece of the layout being a station somewhere in North Essex with a small goods yard. Although the final dimensions of the layout will have to await the partial completion of the building I am looking at around 5m of length. I am not particularly into shunting so a simple dumb-bell type layout with the ability for trains to pass would be adequate. The layout will be DCC and I am happy with the electronics required for a reverse loop. Some parts of this build will appear elsewhere especially in GB’s Some work will be scheduled for the following: Anything but injection, 20 March to 11 July 2021 – a number of structures. The 'Unarmed' Group Build. Saturday 17 April 2021 - Sunday 8 August 2021 – various vehicles including both the RAF & USAF support kits, the old Airfix Airfield sets etc. I may even sneak a quick couple of entries into the current KUTA XIII GB. Also “Less that a tenner” and Blitzbuilds may offer opportunities.
  7. A range of kits that does not seem to have made an appearance in the GB is that made by Metcalfe Models. As we have not had a hut made for some time and this was lurking in my stash, I thought I would add it as my final entry.
  8. Having asked for permission for this build to be included and permission granted as it slightly bends the rules. The first official history of the railways during WW2 was published in 1945 and that stated "The four weeks following 6th June were the busiest in the history of the railways, During that period 17,500 special troop and stores trains were run. 4,500 more than in the four weeks preceding D-Day. ". My build is in tribute to the efforts of those railwaymen and women, Two kits of wooden bodied wagons that would have been pressed into service, in those weeks, to carry the bombs and shells used by the equipment that many others are building in this GB.
  9. I'll be along with this in a while http://www.vintage-airfix.com/airfix/ho-oo-rolling-stock/lowmac-and-jcb3-p-409.html But being railway related, I feel duty bound to be a bit late with some photos! Anyhow, as you can see from the link it first came out in 1964 and has a rarity rating of err 'rare'. I'm saving some pennies with the Dapol pairing- Dapol hit upon the neat idea of selling the Job separately to the Lowmac so model building sites don't have to be rail served. I think they'll be plenty of fun ahead! Thanks to our hosts for conceiving this build to haze through the summer with.
  10. My second entry, will be something completely different for me, a OO Gauge locomotive, a Southern Region Schools Class 4-4-0.
  11. This recent addition to the shelf of doom was a Made in Britain II GB fail, so what better opportunity could there be to complete it than to resurrect it as an entry into KUTA X. Here is a link to the build, and a few photos of how things stand at present. So, just a single entry for now but there are other candidates that have been hanging around the unfinished pile which I might add later, it all depends on how this progresses.
  12. Following a suggestion by @Mjwomack I have decided to have a go at a third build. If things go according to plan then I am hoping that I can complete them all. Kit sprue shots are below, lots of flash on the detail parts, so there will be plenty of cleaning up to do for a start. Wish me luck.
  13. Having made the assumption that the work I have carried out so far falls within the 25% rule I am going to include this as my second build. As can be seen in the photos, the only items that have been glued are the boiler and the lower frame halves, so I think that this is a fair assumption when considering the improvements (such as replacement of the handrails) I would like to make, I hope that this is OK. However, if there are any objections I would like to continue with the build but will not include final photos in the gallery. Evening Star was built at the Swindon Works in 1960 and, as well as being 999th standard class, was the last steam locomotive built by BR (though not numerically). She was the only class 9F to be named following a competition run by BR Western Region staff magazine, though other preserved 9F's have received names since. After five years service over the Western Region and Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway, 92220 was withdrawn and placed in storage. In 1966 the locomotive was towed to Crewe for overhaul and restoration and is part of the NRM's National Collection. More information can be found here Work carried out so far.
  14. I'm making this up as I go along, but looking at other threads for this build that seems to be the norm at this stage I'm a frustrated railway modeller suffering from the usual lack of space so a vignette is an excellent solution. I'm also unashamedly East Anglian with an interest in the branch and cross-country routes that literally collapsed from exhaustion at the end of WW2. One of these was the Stour Valley through Essex, Suffolk and Cambs. On this route Clare station is a gem of Victorian nuttiness - who else would build a railway station in the middle of an ancient castle? http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/c/clare/index51.shtml Too big for this build so onto this bit of 1960s of nuttiness- the railcar, will be the inspiration instead. http://www.railcar.co.uk/images/uploads/105/800/class-105-dmu-1448820941-800.jpg With joyous disregard for non-existent health and safety Shell wanted to promote their new fuel additive and improved economy (does this sound familiar?). The full story is at http://www.railcar.co.uk/topic/shell-mex-advert/ Put simply put they hired the line for a couple of Sundays to test it all out and sent a car fitted with rail wheels for filming. In the real version this was radio controlled but for the tests a railway inspector and shell representative were also in the car with the extravagant safety equipment of a bone dome. It is that scenario that I want to reproduce. In this photo you can see one of the two-man crew with crash helmet and the prominent radio control aerial. Despite the comment to staff that, 'It must be noted that the Railways Board are deriving a very good financial benefit for this exercise and, therefore, co-operation of all staff will be appreciated.' the cost of repairing the line was too much and it closed about a month after filming. And to explain the title of this build to non-railway minded; its a pun. Little diesel trains of 1 or two coaches are sometimes called railbuses or railcars and clearly there is also a railcar involved. That's the background now onto the theory....
  15. Hi All, Second entry in this GB. Popped in to Trains4U in P'boro (Work just up the road) for various tools and consumables for the A4 and this fell in the basket as well. Complete polar opposite of the A4 - Stephenson's Rocket was a ground breaking development in the very beginning of steam locomotive engineering. Introducing boiler tubes, the blastpipe and cylinders coupled directly to the driving wheels. It's the Dapol (Ex Airfix/Kitmaster) Rocket which I built at least 4 decades ago - Don't expect this one to move under its own steam though (Sorry) This is one that can be built at lunchtime at my desk - Something I wouldn't entertain doing with a whitemetal kit, elf and safety and all that....
