  1. Tamiya 1/35th NASHORN Pachyderm packs a punch First off, a HUGE thank you to @Ozzy whom, for reasons known only to himself, thought to gift this Nashorn to me. He did say, however, that he remembered the birth, life and untimely death of my previous Nashorn, and 'felt sorry for me'. I'm paraphrasing there, and putting words into his mouth, but hey, that's the gist of it. Humbled by his generoustiy and thoughtfulness, I have delved into my stash and am donating a boxed Tamiya 1/35th Cromwell to his Models for Heroes work. Prologue. I originally entered this GB, intending to have a second go at a Nashorn, with full PE, but I discovered that the price of said model had risen by 30 percent in the past 2 years, from over 30 quid, to over 40 quid, and the full PE has increased in cost as well, taking the total to over 100 quid! That was too rich for me. I decided then, to fall back on Tamiya's Golden Oldie, StuGIV and uprgade this with PE and PE zimmerit - a lot of PE, but still a fraction of the cost of the full-beans Nashorn. Ozzy's kind gift though, has ressurrected the Nashorn, and, after much deliberation and studying of the interweb, I have realised that the full beans PE isn't worth the money anyway. There are no PE parts for the gun itself, and really, the only 'worthwhile' parts are for the ammo boxes. And the racks inside those boxes are (in my experience) a bit of a pig to make. The kit's gun barrel is pretty good, requiring only minimal 'de-lousing' and is nice and straight, so I won't bother with a metal replacement. The tracks are pretty good too, so I won't be bothering with an upgrade there either. This Nashorn then, will be OOB. In honour of my previous NASHORN, RIP (Rest In Pieces) I shall be sticking with the winter camo. This time, however, I will NOT be using hairspray 'juice' and bicarb for snow effects. 'Tis this, I believe, combined with a final rinse in warm water, that caused the orginal to begin to fall apart in my hands, and prompted the 'absolute' falling apart due to sudden, repeated, and violent impacts against the hot water tap. Finally, 'Pachyderm' is a term most often associated with elephants, but it does encompass any thick-skinned, hoofed mammal, including elephants, hippopotamusessesses, and rhinoceri. 'Nashorn' (for those who don't know) is German for 'Giraffe'. No. Really. It's not. Good luck to all in the GB, and even if you don't get to finish on time (I may well be one such person) PLEASE DO STILL VOTE! Badder
  2. So I have decided to pull out Tamiya's Nashorn out of my stash for the first time since Christmas of last year... how appropriate. But I have decided to order some PE for it (all PE available), along with a metal barrel and tracks. I have decided to do a diorama for this model, and I was looking at some German soldiers that will match the Battle of Kursk scene I'm thinking about doing. So this will be a project that'll last my entire Christmas break. Pictures will be uploaded when I receive the aftermarket parts and figures. Along with some ideas for the dio. I plan on making. Marry Christmas, Mark
  3. Hello All, The latest completions - Nashorn, Panther G and a kitbashed Jagdpanzer IV L/70 all 1/144 scale from DML's armour series. Finished in Gunze Acrylics and MiG acrylics. Weathering in oils, inks, pigments and Tamiyas weathering compacts. Thanks for looking. Thanks for looking, Ian
  4. Hello, I'll start my appearance on this forum with my most recent build. The most complicated build I've done so far. It took me about 8 months to finish but that's due to moving house and then I didn't know where to start again:) Anyways, It's done. Had problems with painting as I wanted to do the hair laquer method for scratches and stuff. I was crying when after applying paint the next day, it was coming off and looked like a mess. Painted again and again. Finally I've managed to make it. There was a problem with the so called "magic tracks" made by Dragon. They not workable at all. If you assemble them without glue it falls apart If you use some glue, it's too stiff. Had to build it in sections like tracks in 1/72 scale models. I hope you like it:)
  5. SdKfz 164 Nashorn for Tamiya 1:35 Eduard There were a lot of delighted AFV modellers when the Tamiya 1:35 Nashorn was released, and a bit of a surprise. Naturally the kit is a lovely piece of Tamiya engineering with loads of detail already included. Yet there are always areas that could be improved particularly when trying to achieve a scale thickness which injection moulding just cannot match. To this end, Eduard have released two sets of etched brass which should give the kit a bit more pizzazz, and give it a more scale look. As is normal for these types of enhancement sets some of the kit detail will need to be removed before adding the etched parts and the modeller will also have to supply their own styrene or brass rod to complete some of the assemblies. [36266 Detail Set] This medium sized sheet is crammed full of etched parts, and looks like Eduard made the most of the available space without having to produce a second sheet. Along with the standard replacement clamps, brackets and grab handles the set included new items for the track storage rack, hasps and clasps for the storage boxes, front mudguards, searchlight mount, and fire extinguisher mount. One part, which looks like it assembles into a ammunition fuse box even has textured surfaces to simulate the wood that these were constructed from. In the gun compartment there are new storage racks, document pouches, gas mask canister brackets, aerial mounts and other sundry brackets. There are also two new radios and their associated support frames, a new grille and surround for the engine exhausts and new brackets for the storage of the MG-34/42 machine gun and MP-40 sub-machine gun and a new latch mechanism for the rear doors. [36277 Floor Plates and Ammunition Boxes] As the title states, this set provides the modeller with two very detailed ready use ammunition lockers for the inside of the gun compartment. Each unit has doors that can be posed open or closed and come complete with all the internal racks suitable for the 88mm ammunition, which you will need to source separately. The floor plates are simple to fit as, once folded to shape, they are just glued into position around the gun compartment. Conclusion Even Tamiya kits can do with some extra detailing every now and then, and these sets provide enough to make the difference without going overboard. I particularly like the 88mm ammunition lockers which will look great in their open state, especially if combined with some brass shells. With care and patience they should be ok to be used by all but the pure novice but still be slightly challenging in areas. Highly recommended Review sample courtesy of
