  1. Hello everyone, here's my finished B-17F "Memphis Belle" in 1/72 by Revell: This is a great value model kit and the detail is impressive OOB. I did scratch build some oxygen tanks for the upper turret and ammo boxes/consoles for the bombardiers/navigators section and added cables to the landing gear but other than that, built as is. As ever, I try and learn new things each time I tackle a new kit and this one was no different! Some of the main fit issues with this kit are the perspex nose and clear parts for the side walls in the bombardier/navigator compartment and this time, rather than gluing and accepting the fit, I sanded and filled the parts and then buffed with lighter grades until the clear parts were clear again. It took a long time to get the finish around the nose but it was absolutely worth it, as to my eye, the perspex fits well without overstated joins/gaps and looks pretty good. I learnt NEVER to use Vallejo airbrush primer if there are ever any concerns around the plastic finish as you simply cannot sand this stuff - it just peels away. This also means you will see some imperfections in the paint finish from the photos as I had to accept the end result due to this, as it wasn't worth sanding it back to get it right. I also learnt how to use enamel washes on this one and how to blend oils on the flat cote with white spirit. Finally, had some great advice on here as to adding some colour to the flat cote to slightly change the contrast of paint. see the WIP for this: Anyway, hope you enjoy. Cheers, JB.
  2. Hi Everyone, I'm quite far through my Memphis Belle build in 1/72 and I'm having a dilemma. I'm not sure I like (I might hate) my OD. It's worse when I think about it to when I go back to and see it again, but thought I'd get some honest advice from you lot before I continue... I know there are lots of variations and I know that sun bleaching and fading took its toll overtime but I think it looks too dark. Considering the work I will have to do, to re-spray a lighter colour, with decal masking (oh god) and repainting the medium green camo, I'm verging on not! I've taken the pictures in various light, so, what are your thoughts please?
  3. I've been thinking about doing a Revell B17 in a larger scale. The Memphis Belle kit seems ok .. I'm happy to not have all the interior detail Which though would be great to scratch build is going to be hidden this time, and for the money it's not a bad value kit. The kit comes with an alternative to build a ship called " Meat Hound". I've seen some stuff about this kit not being accurate enough to represent the Belle. I like to be different and would go for the alternative here.. as it has an amazing story behind it. Meat Hound was attacked by German fighters and all crew except the pilot jumped over Holland. the pilot made it back to England and crash landed at RAF Metfield in Suffolk. Now this is an airfield I often cycle to .. .. so the die Is almost cast ... so to speak. Ive done a search i n the forums but don't seem to find anyone who has done this kit as Meat Hound before.. £30 is a small amount to have a go at a 1:48 scale heavy I think. Anyone like me to do a kit review and then work in Progress to RFI if I buy this?
  4. So, a giant box arrived on my doorstep yesterday. Though it says B-17G it's something a tad bit different. This is my test shot copy of HK's forthcoming B-17F. I'll be building this one for an upcoming Model Aircraft article. I'll also be running the first WIP of sorts of this kit here for you. Though I can't show everything what I will do is highlight some of the features of the new kit as well as share some intermediary pics of progress here and there. I'm currently wrapping up the Dornier Do335A kit, and will be moving into this one throwing the full Eduard assortment at it (using as much of the G stuff that is common as possible). Please stay tuned! Many thanks to Neil Yan and HK Models and James Hatch and Large Scale Modeller for making this one possible!
  5. My next build is Revell's 1/72 B-17f, being built as 'Memphis Belle'. Woody37 did a great review of the kit here on BM (thanks Neil!) and that has some great sprue shots so please refer to that. My only sprue shot will be this: Still in the plastic bags. Perhaps a little intimidating but my last two (big) builds have been Valom short-run kits so I'm expecting Revell's German engineering and 'efficient' instructions (ve vill give ze orders!) to give me a bit of a rest (famous last words). Most people (including me when I bought it some time ago) consider this to be a big model, but my recent experiences have warped my perception somewhat - it's not big, it's just, er, close. Here's the B17 wing compared to my recently completed Bombay: So 'standard size' then. And it has locator pins and everything! I'm a bit concerned by the number of 'Marie Celeste' builds out there that start well but then just fizzle out. I shall, however, be ruthlessly plagiarising tips and warnings from: - robbo1234biking's part build WiP in June 2009 - Rickpadwick1801's completed build in May 2014 and - Andy Moore's current WiP - although it's a 'G' they share a lot of parts (naughty things) And of course I'll be trying to replicate Fozzy's interior from his amazing scratch build: Just kidding, of course, I won't be trying to do that, it's a 'G' too! And, of course, well beyond my relatively Newbie skills. So, I've read the threads, watched the film (last night) and done some 'research' on BM and the internet. I hope this WiP will be as 'educational and entertaining' as my last couple so, to quote 'Buffalo Joe', "Hold onto your hats boys!"**. And girls, obviously. And others. It's time to wash my parts, and then I'll rinse the sprues and get started*. * Dbl-E, score 1, fnaar fnaar ** If you haven't watched 'Ice Pilots' I recommend it. It's on YouTube and here's the Season 1 trailer. Six series to watch - go on, you know you want to!
  6. Having returned to modelling (that auto-corrected as meddling, probably more apt) after a really long break I bought this some time ago and held it in the stash, remembering it as a 'special' model that needed me to hone my skills before starting. I was not wrong. I started it with some trepidation after seeing several stalled builds on BM and I now understand why; Revell have obviously used the same molds for the 'F' and 'G' variants and this, IMHO, causes more problems than it's worth, especially as they have forgotten to amend the instructions in some places. Anyway, enough of my moaning, there's enough of that in the WiP. I present for your pleasure the 'Memphis Belle'. Built OOB except for some scratched ammunition belts for the waist guns (not up to Fozzy standards) this was a challenging kit and I'm only reasonably happy with the results. And some shots of the interior, for those of you who missed the WiP; Mixed feelings as you can probably tell. I may build another B17, just not the Revell one. Thanks for looking.
  7. Hello all My latest offering - this is Revell's 1/48 Flying Fortress in 1/48. This is its Memphis Belle boxing of a kit dating back to the 70s, there were some fit issues and filling required. It might be stating the obvious but this kit is BIG - way too big for my display shelf, so it has had to find refuge in the garage. She was built straight from the box with no aftermarket additions, airbrushed with Revell Aqua Acrylics, then weathered with a Flory dark dirt panel line wash, some oils and pastels and a heavily diluted Tamiya acrylic mix for some exhaust stains. As well as the kit's own issues, my own shortcomings meant that I used superglue to attach the nose, forgetting that I hadn't dipped it in Klear first, hence some fogging :banghead:although I don't think that's noticeable in these pics. All in all an enjoyable build. Thanks for looking, any comments welcome Cheers Adam
  8. Hi Everyone, Here is my first completed build during my week off. This kit has to be one of my favourite builds of the year so far. It comes with decals with 2 different decal schemes for 2 different B-17s : The Memphis Bele and The Shamrock Special. I have chosen to build the kit as the Memphis Belle with the following details : B-17F-10-BO, serial 41-24485, DF-A, Memphis Belle, 8th Air Force, 91st Bomb Group, 324th Bomb Squadron, Bassingbourn, UK, May 1943 Anyway here are the photos : Thanks for looking. Comments are welcome. Rick
  9. Hi Everyone, This will be the WIP thread for my next build project, the Revell 1/72 scale B-17F Memphis Belle. This is likely to be a challenging kit as it is a skill level 5. There are 9 sprues of light grey plastic and 1 clear sprue. The total number of parts in this kit are 235. The decals for the kit are also fairly comprehensive. I have already washed the kit to make it ready for painting. I will be working on this in conjunction with my USS Ronald Reagan kit. Anyway here are the photos of the grey sprues. More photos to follow as soon as progress starts. Cheers, Rick
