  5. Even though the camera has shown me areas that still need attention, I'm calling this sort-of done. Rough and ready photos taken with my phone under my workbench lighting. This is the 1/72nd scale Tamiya Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vb Tropical, Rising Decal Mediterranean Spitfires decal sheet (RD72-037), aircraft EP200 based at Ta'Qali on Malta in July of 1942. I went with the suggested colours simply because I know nothing compared to folk who've spent thousands of hours researching the subject. Vallejo paint for the main colours, Tamiya X-35 varnish, Tamiya Panel Line Accent Colors, and various oil paint streaks, smudges and washes. I have almost certainly overdone things heavily (and the phone camera has emphasised things a bit), but I'm fairly happy with the results. I will fix the wonky wheels, the paint on the bottle-bottom canopy, and the overdone wheel-well washes. I may even repair the pitot tube. This was, however, more of a "get myself moving" build, after a prolonged period of procrastination. I've learned a lot on this, and will never, ever use Vallejo paint for the main colours again. They do not airbrush well, at least for me, no matter what is used. Pebbly, lumpy texture, and they stick to the surface of the primed model as well as if you'd just smeared Vaseline all over it. Good colours, no stick. A shame, so it's back to Tamiya and Humbrol for me.
  6. The Spitfire Vc's supplied to Malta were flown in armed with the 4 20mm canon, but prior to entry into service had two of the canon removed (either from the I/B or O/B bays) . My question is were the Browning .303's then re-installed in the outer bays, to give the same weight of fire as the Vb's? The C wing was designed to accept them, and the guns would be routinely removed and installed for cleaning and servicing, anyhow. There would have been no shortage of supply of .303's or ammunition as they were used in the Vb's. "Buzz" Beurling's combat reports (reprinted in the book 'Sniper of the Skies' by Nick Thomas) speaks of attacking with 'canon and machine gun fire' but does not mention the specific aircraft he flew on that day. Photo's in Brian Cauchi's book, and Paul Lucas's articles are inconclusive, and profiles are somewhat unreliable. Any thoughts, anyone? thanks, Colin
  7. Oh dear.... I’m hooked on this group build! Next cab off the rank is from Airfix: Kit: Airfix 1/48 Spitfire Vb “Specialist Spitfires” Decals: Victory Productions “Aces of the Empire” Extras: Eduard harnesses The subject this time is Spitfire Vb Trop EP706 of 249 Squadron RAF based in Malta in Sept 1942 and flown by George Beurling. The decal sheet asserts that this was not one of the Malta ‘blue’ Spitfires, so I’ll be sticking with the mid stone/ dark earth / azure blue scheme. They also refer to photographs of this aircraft but I have yet to find any on google - if anyone has a photo to help that would be much appreciated! First, the box/ sprue shots and then a look at the profile!
  8. As promised...I just cannot seem to stop...KoPro's Spitfire Mk.Vc, from the Siege of Malta. I am not sure which exterior I will be making, but for now the building is all the same. From what I have seen, this box-art is incorrect. Jerry Smith's aircraft was blue...blue-grey, something like that. And here are some more incorrect profiles and painting guides. Some sprue... ..and what I have removed and primed so far. I'll assemble the cockpit and then paint it. Osprey tells me that Smith's MK.Vc had its desert colours overpainted in Gibraltar, along with the rest of the Operation Bowery aircraft, and probably using paint guns, so the paint job would not be perfect. Supposedly a different shade than the non-spec blue. Maybe a Mediterranean Blue, but thinner coats so it is almost grey-blue? I have seen models built of this and they were really dark blue, factory fresh. not what I am looking for. In any case, I would like some advice about this from the forum because I am going to build Jerry Smith's Mk.Vc. It's too famous an aircraft to not do so. --John
