  1. British Vickers Machine Gun (35712) 1:35 ICM via Hannants Ltd. The Vickers Machine Gun was a development of original Maxim, the company Vickers had bought in the late 1800s, lightened and with an inverted breech to improve the type, which entered into British service at the outbreak of WWI in insufficient numbers due partly to the price being asked for each one, which was soon rectified by accusations of profiteering that resulted in a huge price cut per unit. It was used first by the infantry, then by the newly formed Machine Gun Corps when the lighter Lewis gun arrived on the scene, and I’m proud to say my Paternal grandfather was one of the operators of this type, surviving the war despite getting gassed, and bringing home a medal for bravery into the bargain. We’ve still got his cap badge that has been polished so much that the ridges on the cooling jacket have all-but worn away. The gun remained in service throughout WWI and WWII, and was finally replaced by the General Purpose Machine Gun in the late 60s. Quite a service run. The Kit At 1:35 it’s a small model, although it took a fairly large crew to operate it, mostly in carrying the equipment from place to place, as it had a prodigious thirst for ammunition. The kit arrives in a small box with one sprue inside along with an A4 instruction sheet that is folded to fit the box. You can build one complete assembly from the box, but there are two guns and two tripods, the former having options for the fluted and straight cooling jackets, while the latter are set up for seated or prone operation. Construction is simple, with the breech details and firing handle attached to your jacketed barrel of choice, followed by the two arms that hold the gun in place and their central arm with adjustment wheel at the bottom. A length of finely moulded ammunition slides through the breech, and the unused end is fixed to the ammo can with more moulded rounds in an insert that sits on top of the box. The weapon is inserted into the hole at the top of your choice of tripods, then the aforementioned ammo can and the water reservoir for the cooling jacket, which is linked by a hose to the underside of the muzzle, but isn’t mentioned at all in the instructions. Depending on how you will deploy your gun, you could use a length of lead wire or similar to portray this, gluing it to the can. If you’re unsure of the correct locations, there are a number of good resources online. Colour call-outs are made throughout the build using letters in boxes that correspond to a table on the rear that gives the paint names plus Revell and Tamiya paint codes. Conclusion It’s a useful item to have in any diorama or vehicle, and with its huge length of service it can fit into many different situations. I’m looking forward to a set with figures, especially if it is WWI era. Highly recommended. Available in the UK from importers H G Hannants Ltd. Review sample courtesy of
  2. My build of the Airfix 1/32 MG 1100 Saloon (M7C) This was built for the ATF 14th Anniversary Group Build. You can read about this build here. That is all for now Dave
  3. This is Aoshima's curbside 1:24 MG B, as reboxed in the past by Airfix which is the one I had. I think Revell have also offered this kit, and Aoshima have recently re-issued it again. I started this sometime in 2009, but it wasn't completed until the summer of 2010, due to the ongoing problem of too many projects at once, and my work desk being an utter tip at that time. This one was built entirely out of the box, except for BMF being used for the chrome trims along the flanks and for the windscreen frame (the screen, quarterlights and frame was a one piece clear molding). I think I may have used an aluminium effect BMF so that the screen frame wasn't too bright, as the real thing is polished alloy, rather than chrome. It comes with options for hood up, hood down, half tonneau or rear tonneau only. My kit came with the parts for the rubber bumper version too. However, Aoshima's recent releases are boxed as different chrome bumper & rubber bumper ones - whilst the rubber bumper release includes the chrome bumper parts, the chrome bumper one doesn't include the rubber bumpers or the half tonneau which are all on the same mini sprue. Aside from box art, the decals are also slightly different to reflect the model year (think it's basically the numberplates), and also the rubber bumper version now includes a small sprue with a set of Rostyle steel wheels, which are more appropriate for the rubber bumper cars than the wires. However, what the Airfix or Aoshima instructions don't tell you is that the ride height between the two is different as the rubber bumper cars were jacked up for compliance with US Federal regs (to do with headlamp and / or bumper heights). However, the ride height on the model can be adjusted for either without any modifications to the parts - details below: Floorpan / chassis in the rubber bumper ride height position, slotted in as per the instructions. Chrome bumper ride height position - note that the floorpan / chassis has been slotted in higher up inside the body and is now resting above the tabs that it is supposed to clip into. There didn't seem to be any affect on the fit of the interior tub, but the ride height difference was noticable.
  4. In the Dark... This is a collaboration project between myself and Ben Winter-Giles (@bengunstagram on IG). Titled "In the Dark...", it tells of our ideas, efforts and creativity come to life, when no one's looking, Toy Story style. The build took just over four months and is designed to be of two parts, with each to be kept by the respective modeller but able to be re-united for competitions and displays. Each an epic display in its own right but together they tell the story of how two artists, from different genres, with different styles, utilising different techniques, and possessed of different philosophies towards model making, come together to craft something bigger than themselves. The build features a 1/100 Bandai Master Grade Sazabi ver.Ka and Hi-Nu ver.Ka: The Sazabi (christened "Suzie-B" by her creator) features custom paint, AnchoreT propellant tanks and funnel pods, with a Mechanicore Quad Gatling gun set. The Hi-Nu (callsign "Thumper") features heavy modifications to achieve a levitating effect, and a full THE-51 resin conversion kit with photoetch, and two customised resin handguns. Both feature custom made decals to tell a Cold War, Soviet Russia vs U.S.A story. Our project was completed in time for its public debut at the Australian Capital Territory's ScaleACT-2019 expo and competition. A reveal video was also made to commemorate its public unveiling: Ben and I hope you enjoy the following pics. Thank you for looking!
