  1. Hello Everybody ... This is my take on a VVS lend-lease Hurricane built for the Brits abroad G/Build. It doesn't represent a specific unit/aircraft. It is my interpratation of a well used Hurricane IIB in Soviet use. I opted to paint it in winter white wash. Specific mods include the replacement of the 8 core .303’s with the heavier Soviet guns, the associated panel lines, & the RS-82 Rockets and Rails. Without further talk I present my white Hurricane. I hope this passes muster. Please feel free to question, comment, or joke. If you’d like to see the WIP please follow the link. Dennis
  2. Hi mates,I would like to participate to this GB assembling the 1/48 hasegawa kit to realize the Curtiss P-40 E white 65 of Maj. A.A. Matveyev, 154th IAP. if there was anyone interested: here an interesting article about Maj. A.A. Matveyev and his P-40E and here about P-40 Land-lease : "The P-40 in soviet aviation" A quick look inside the box: I'll use these aftermarkets: and now at work ...
  3. This is another, much older build that I finally got around to photographing a few years ago. This model must've been built sometime in the 1990s, I really should've kept decent build notes back then. A few years ago, I took it and several other models (see the Bell AH-1S Cobra) to another small-town airport, the Coffield Regional Airport in Rockdale, Texas, about 20 miles away. The airport used to belong to a local millionaire, H.H. Coffield, and he had lot’s of cool WWII planes out there, including B-25s and C-47s. I thought the old hangar had a cool, “classic” look to it and used it for a background. The model’s first release date, according to the instructions, was 1969, then 1983 and ’89. It must’ve really been somewhat “state of the art” in 1969 with lot’s of cool detail and features. I added a little bit of wiring/tubing and tried my hand at dirtying up the landing gear and belly. It is done in Soviet Air Force markings and colors and represents one of over 4,000 Airacobras turned over to the Russians on Lend-Lease terms during World War II. Paint is Humbrol and ModelMaster enamel, applied with the Paasche Model H. Decals came with the kit. As to comments that it might be just too clean for the Russian Front, there’s this: “Too clean? Da, IS clean. Clean due to heroic efforts of Sgt. Alexei Nadgudunov, crew chief. Sgt. Nadgudunov was awarded Hero of Soviet Union medal for his efforts to maintain aircraft even in most-forward positions of front against German fascists in Great Patriotic War! Wielding high-pressure water spray, Nadgudunov beat back worst conditions that Mother Russia could provide. Sgt. Nadgudunov stated that even in harsh circumstances of combat, Soviet aircraft could go to war in presentable condition! VVS General Dimitri Klekov said Sgt. Alexei Nadgudunov exemplified efforts of patriotic Russian comrade citizens and soldiers in war against the fascist invaders.” 😉 Although I'd change several things if I were building another, this one turned out to be a fair “four-footer” I guess. Thanks for taking a look, and all comments welcomed! Gary
  4. Lend-Lease And Soviet Aviation In The Second World War ISBN : 9781911512264 Helion and Company via Casemate UK During WWII a huge ammount of material and arms was delivered to the Soviet Union, the value of this equipement has been long debated though its been shown that the depletion of German assets fighting on the Eastern front did no doubt help the Allied push into France and Germany. Through no doubt a great deal of research the author has not only made a an investigation into how these deliveries did in fact help the allied cause. The book considers the equipment, how it was delivered and how it was adapted by the Russians for use in their own challenging climate. The use by them, and mastering of equipment the western allies thought ill suited to their own operations is investigated; one of the more well known ones is the P-39. Not well liked by allied Air Forces but extremely well liked by Russian Pilots in the ground attack role. Included are detailed combat assessments prepared by the Soviets with their views on the allied equipment supplied. Aircraft considered in detail are; Hawker Hurricane Supermarine Spitfire Curtiss P-40 Kitty hawk Hawker Typhoon Bell P-39 Air Cobra Bell P-63 Kingcobra Republic P-47 Thunderbolt Short Stirling Curtiss O052 Owl Douglas A-20 Boston North American P-51 Mustang Vougt OS2U Kingfisher Curtiss C-46 Commando de Havilland Mosquito North American B-25 Mitchell Amstrong Withworth Albemarle Handley Page Hampden Dougals C-47 Skytrain Consolidated PBY Catalina North American AT-6 Texan In addition to the official deliveries of aircraft the book looks at those which arrived by accident. The text is supported by nearly 700 photographs, 100 colour aircraft profiles, plus maps and charts. Conclusion It is evident that a great deal of research has gone into this book. It really does give a proper attempt to assess the impact of deliveries of these aircraft to the Soviets. If you're interested in these aircraft in Soviet service, and this part of WWII in particular then its well worth investing in this publication. Very Highly Recommended. Review sample courtesy of
  5. Hi Folks, I'm hoping some one out there in BM land will be able to help me out. I am looking for a scan copy of an article about the lend lease A-20 Boston as used by the USSR in the Great Patriotic War as featured in Model Aircraft Monthly in November 2008? It was part 2 of 3 and while I have the October and December issues which included parts 1& 3, my copy of the November issue has gone walkabout!!!(probably put away somewhere safe, so safe that I now can't find it ) Or if anyone can tell me or know of a photo or profile of a Boston IV(A-20G) that was used by the Soviets that was fitted with the solid gun nose rather than the glazed bomber nose? Anyway, if anyone can possibly help out I would be very grateful. Thanks, Vincent
  6. I'm looking at making or buying a carrier deck base to display some FAA aircraft. The subject is likely to be HMS Ravager or one of the other lend-lease carriers, so a US design in RN service. http://www.royalnavyresearcharchive.org.uk/ESCORT/Galleries/RAVAGER_Gllery.htm I see Eduard produce exactly what I need in US Navy configuration, but what colours should the Royal Navy carriers be painted? Not just the wood, but the metal areas, as well as the flightdeck markings. Thanks for any help, could equally have gone into the maritime section I know, Cheers, Bill.
