  1. After the Jetstream 31 & 32 (http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234972846-172-bae-jetstream-31-32-by-amodel-released/?hl=jetstream) Amodel is to release another serie of 1/72nd Jetstream kits. Source: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234997175-amodel-new-172nd-1144th-kits-in-2016-update/ - ref.72331 - BAe Jetstream T.1 - ref.72332 - BAe Jetstream T.2 - ref.72333 - BAe Jetstream T.3 - ref.72335 - BAe Jetstream 200 V.P.
  2. In the early 70s the USAF started receiving their first batch of C-10 Jetstreams ordered from the UK company Handley Page. With the US still mired in the Vietnam war, an urgent requirement was identified to replace the EC-121R "Batcat" sensor relay aircraft that formed the aerial segment of Operation Igloo White - the monitoring of traffic on the Ho Chi Minh trail. The EC-121s were deemed too vulnerable so a smaller aircraft was sought. The newly arrived Jetstreams fitted the bill perfectly. A special operations flight was formed within the 166th TAW/Delaware ANG to operate a small number of early conversions to the role - designated RC-10B "Rivet Jenny". These Jetstreams were modified by E-Systems Inc in Greenville to have a number of highly specialised workstations in the cabin. This necessitated the need to blank out all the windows on the starboard side. The aircraft were flown by a flight crew of two, plus 3 mission specialists in the cabin who operated the sensors and relay equipment. This is the Airfix Vintage Classics Jetstream, bought from Sywell Aviation Museum - they sell them to raise funds for the restoration of their own Jetstream G-RAVL. The kit went together pretty well, its taken me over 6 months mainly due to the building of the interior, plus a break to decorate the spare room! This was my first ever "what if" and proved very enjoyable. I started out just doing the aircraft, but then @TEXANTOMCAT offered me a PSP base that he didn't need and before I knew it I was trawling the internet for jeeps and oil cans 🙂 Also my first time spraying camo - so might as well make it a 3 tone camo, right? Paints were the ever reliable Mr Hobby, except the black was Tamiya I think.. Build thread is here is anyone's interested: Some pictures: (Lets all ignore the sink mark on the front landing gear door!! 😲) After suffering a technical problem on a mission over the trail, aircraft 67-362 had to divert to a US Army forward operation location as a precaution. Here the flight crew are attempting to ascertain the location of the nearest 5* hotel with a pool 🙂 They appear to have stepped in some very strange animal droppings as they left the aircraft. As ever, thanks to the community for the support and ideas along the way, its been a blast, and quite refreshing to not have to care too much about reality! Al.
  3. Evening All, Having had some complicated builds of late (which shouldn't have been, but various builder related cock-ups got in the way) I was looking for something quick and simple that I could bosh together. I picked up the Vintage Classic Airfix Jetstream from Sywell Aviation Museum the other year - they sell them to raise funds for the restoration of their jetstream. I briefly considered trying to turn it into the one at Sywell but realised that was way beyond my skill set. Someone then mentioned it might make a good what-if subject. The kit is base don the USAF C-10 which was cancelled before any could be delivered, so the whole kit is basically a what-if anyway! I've always fancied doing something in USAF SEA camo, so thought this might be a good subject. I initially thought of doing some kind if tactical/in-theatre medevac version which would allow me to have the SEA camo and leave everything else pretty much as is. But then I thought it would look really neat with a black underside rather than the more normal grey. I figured a role that would need the black underside would be nocturnal monitoring of the seismic sensors that were laid along the Ho Chi Minh trail. And so I arrived at an EC-10 modified with some workstations and aerials for the role and SEA/black camo. Obligatory box contents shot: And my first attempt at drawing out a camo scheme loosely based on the C-130: Really quite tricky doing that and making all the colours line up across the various surfaces. The kit has some stretchers in the cabin, I won't be needed those for the sneaky-beaky role I have in mind. Will probably have a go at blanking out the windows on one side of the fuselage and adding some plastic card aerials. Did think of trying to make some basic operator stations for the interior, not sure about that, we'll see. Scratch building stuff is not something I usually have patience for. So already my nice simple mojo-restorer has grown legs and started sprinting away from me! 🙂 Don't think progress is going to be that fast as I have a Lightning to finish once I recover from the satin varnish disaster that it suffered last week. Plus real life is getting in the way at the moment... Al.
  4. Morning All, I've just started building the Airfix Vintage Classics HP Jetstream which is modelled on the proposed USAF variant, the C-10. Rather than do the white/grey scheme I'm contemplating something a little more interesting - an SEA camo version as deployed for casevac and/or general transport duties in Vietnam. The camo is easy enough, standard colours, but I'm wondering about what markings I can use. I think I need a small full colour star and bar (these seem to be much more common than the outline black ones that I initially thought of). Based on pictures of TAC C-130s I've seen I'd quite like to have a white tailcode and TAC badge as well. I'm thinking I could model it as assigned to one of the C-130 units that was in theatre - does anyone know of a list of units and their tailcodes? Also, does anyone know of a decal sheet with suitably small star and bars and the lettering to make up the tail code - and even a TAC badge? The Jetstream fin is pretty small so I'm not sure if this bit's going to be possible. I could also do with some small white numbers to represent the serial.. Thanks for any input! Al.
  5. Handley Page Jetstream 1:72 Airfix (A03012V) Handley Page developed the Jetstream to fill a niche in the market for a small twin turbo prop airliner for the US market. In order t improve sales in the US the original Turboméca engines were to be replaced by Garrett engines, and this aircraft was ordered by the UASF as the C-10A. It was to feature a rear cargo door with seating for 12 passengers or 6 stretchers. The USAF would eventually cancel these orders due to late delivery. Following the demise of Handley Page the design was picked up by a group of investors headed by Scottish Aviation, and the Company Jetstream Aviation was created. 26 Jetstream T.1s were ordered by the RAF, 14 of these would be modified to T.2s for use by the Royal Navy. When Scottish Aviation became part of BAe they would continue to develop the design into the Jetstream 31. The Kit Airfix's kit has been around since 1969 and feature the aircraft with the Garett engines for the USAF examples. The tooling is the old school multi part sprues however the tooling is still good, nice and sharp with no flash. Construction is fairly standard. The cockpit is fairly basic with two seated pilots who are identical, The completed cockpit fits into the right fuselage half . For the main fuselage a full stretcher fit is included. Once this is all in thee fuselage can be completed and the wings added, these are a single lower wing with left & right uppers, The tailplanes and rudder can then go onto the fuselage, and the engines can be built up and fitted to the wings. The landing gears and doors can be added along with the main rear airstairs door. Decals The small decal sheet with USAF Markings only is by cartograf so there is no issues there. Conclusion Whilst I would love to see Airfix release a brand new tool of this aircraft, the tooling on this one is still good, all though it is only really good for the version the USAF never actually bought in the end. 6. So - this my first finished 'lock-down' build! It has overtaken the Cheyenne and the Ju-87 and has been build in 13 days! Troublefree build apart from the decals - which were too stiff - and some self induced problems, which were - more or less easily solved. So without further ado: Let me present the Airfix 1/72 Handley-Page Jetstream C-10A Hope you like it! Cheers - and keep safe apart Hans J
  7. Well, she's finished. You can find the build report here. Not my best build, but I'm pleased with it considering the small scale. This Resin model kit by Welsh is very nice with an excellent fit. I did add some extra details, such as the engine exhausts, various other details on the engines, the direction finder loop antennae and other antennae. I scratched the forward landing gear strut as I found the original to be too thick. The window and cockpit decals are also made by me. And as a bonus a comparison shot with my A330. The diameter of the engine intakes of the A330 is bigger than the fuselage of the Jetstream 41! Thanks for looking and see you next time! Regards, Martijn
