  1. Good evening everyone. The de Havilland Sea Vixen is an aircraft of singular appearance is it not? You notice it. The sweep and curve of its geometry. Formed not only from the requirements of naval aviation but (covertly, one suspects) from those1950s fantasies about how fast and silver a technological future would look. It was the kind of aircraft Captain Scarlet would have trained on and was capable, if required, of protecting the Earth from UFO invasion. At least I think so. I'm going to build two of them partly for the aforementioned reasons, and partly as a way of celebrating the friendship and generosity to be found on this forum. (More on that in a bit.) For now though, posting this in full view means there's no bottling out. Choice of Subject Having wanted to build one these for a long while, I'd been collecting various bits and pieces and images without (as often happens) a definite subject in mind. Always liking a build to be rooted in a meaningful narrative of some kind, I was leafing through some of the entries in the Dorset Crashes site and noted that a FAW.1 (XN708, from 890 Sqn) had gone down in Lyme Bay on the night of 25th November, 1964, killing both crew: Lt Michael J.W. Durrant RN. & Lt Basil A.Last RN. We can sometimes be guilty of building things only to celebrate the notable or the heroic in conflict; in this case it seemed fitting to build something to note those who end uncelebrated in the footnotes of history as peacetime or training casualties. This is the only clearly identifiable shot I've found so far of XN708/R244, original date of photo unknown: Image credit: Imgaylard Brian Patterson has an excellent colour gallery of a sister aircraft here though that will doubtless prove highly useful as references. For the second choice, I'm (as frequently the case in matters of naval aviation) indebted to @Ex-FAAWAFU for drawing to my attention the powerful, nay provocative, black & white diagonal scheme of XJ481 when undertaking Martel trials: Image credit: Roger Winser This has not only the challenge of building a replacement nose to incorporate that camera housing and a Martel to scratch up (I knows there's a 1/72 resin one out there but think the fins are too thick) but a snazzy 'dazzle paint' work to do also, for which @Terry1954 has also kindly supplied some colour references. The Kits I'm going to modify both the venerable 1/72 Frog offering and use the High Planes kit, which has a FAW.1 option. I'd mentioned above that this build was in part a celebration of the generosity no be found on this forum. Let me start by detailing such matters here: The High Planes kit was sent to me some time ago by @Procopius. How gracious is that? Thank-you Edward for this kindness. As a young shaver on the forum, not long after joining I'd mused aloud in a thread about the absence of FAW.1s in 1/72 and been overwhelmed by a (characteristically) generous influx of references and diagrams from both @71chally and @canberra kid regarding the feasibility of modifying the Frog kit. The fruits of these discussions are posted here and I must reread them myself prior to commencing any work in this direction! If you've had a look at Brian Patterson's colour shots above you'll notice prominent in one of them is a Palouste starter. I never used to know about these until seeing @perdu resinate superb examples in his Buccaneer build. Not only that but again without saying anything he'd tucked some of his output away in a package he sent and so I'll be proud to use one of his Paloustes in this project. Thanks Bill! The High Planes kit first: As it says on the box: In fairness I see 'adjustment of parts required' on every kit I buy.... I haven't looked closely-enough at the canopy yet to make any decisions regarding suitablility: Some replacement Aries wheels (I'd forgotten I'd bought them) to replace the originals: The Frog File: Check out the crazy patterning all over the plastic. Weird.... That nose: Subject of much discussion with John and James on the original thread, as might be imagined.... How to '1 a '2: Picked this up dirt cheap of 5thletter bay many moons ago. Think that resin is the 'Final Touch' set (?) but no idea about the white metal provenance. Wheels and legs don't impress: The Airwaves stuff was in the Frog box when I bought it, honest guv: Vaguely possible one or two of those bits may prove of use but certainly not the grotty wingfold. Here's what's really going to offset a diorama - a beautifully perduced Palouste: The markings on both aircraft will be painted rather than decals, but thankfully I've the Model Alliance decal set for the Ark's air wing that I can snaffle the moonlit witches from for the 890 Sqn Vixen: I'm aware of multiple issues with correcting the Frog to a FAW.1, but the High Planes I believe is to be generally trusted in shape terms? (Please correct me if wrong on the latter point). There will of course need to be a wingfold involved somewhere but this has given me a pause for thought: the colour scheme of the Martel-tester is so good that the wings on that one will have to be fully extended to display this handsome plumage, so XN708 will be the one to get the folding treatment, though which kit do do which with (if you see what I mean)? The Frog is moulded with the break in the wings where the fold is so a natural candidate, yet one with such problems in its nose area that this really makes it a better candidate for (the unfolded) XJ481 viz. a totally new and angular schnozz. I'm sure that the High Planes kit can be 'persuaded' to fold so: High Planes = XN708/Palouste (wingfolded) Frog = XJ481/Martel (non-folded) Nearly forgot. XN708 will have the RR Avons visible. So I'll be building 1/72 Avons as well.... References As standard for me, along with contemporary photographs, will be working from original technical documentation, namely several thousand pages of these: I've all 4 volumes of the above, plus: - for the engine build. As the technical manuals are obviously for the FAW.2, help with that handful of specific differences such as canopy etc comes in the form of relevant sections from the FAW.1 manuals generously provided previously by John (@canberra kid). Who else? I'm hoping to have the current Anson build finished by the Autumn so if you've nothing planned for those long winter evenings you'd be very welcome to pull up a Palouste and keep me company here.   2. Hello, I finished this early this morning, just added two small aerials to the nose and that was it. This is the High Planes kit, bought decades ago and restarted in 2016. I added two Airfix DC3 engines as replacements for the basic kit engines, scratch built the three aerials and mast, the set of photo-etched fuselage mounted aerials were liberated from the Encore kit (which was just a reboxing of the horrid Frog kit) and needed some alterations to make them suitable for the High Planes kit. The model was finished using Sovereign paints which I highly recommend, harder work than the Special Hobby kit but this is a more accurate kit than the Special Hobby offering!
  3. Hi peeps, Here's my latest completion for the year; High Planes 1/72 Atlas Cheetah two-seater kit completed as "860", a Cheetah B built from a Nesher T airframe obtained from Israel. The HPM kit isn't all that bad, the plastic parts are easy to work with although my kit is one of the older issues with the overly wide panel lines. The resin parts were also easy to use although the biggest challenge was the LERX extensions as they're not a great fit to the wing after you've cut-out the corresponding areas so plenty of filler and elbow grease is needed to get a good appearance! I also declined to use the provided resin tail fin and ejector seats. For the former I used the plastic part so the panel lines matched the rest of the airframe as those on the resin tail are quite fine and looked out of place and for the ejector seats I used two modified MB Mk 10's from a Special Hobby Mirage F-1C kit I had in stock. I used the kit decals although I substituted Springbok roundels from Xtradecal's Mirage F-1 single seater decal sheet for the later Eagle ones supplied with the kit. Paints were Humbrol throughout with 125 Gunship Grey as the main colour. WIP shot which I've already posted in another thread: Completed shots: Comments welcome! Mike.
  4. Here's my shot at a High Planes model, of which I have several. Built out the box with kit decals. R2198 (sometimes known as R2158!) had a slightly non-standard scheme applied in Stone/Dark Earth/Azure Blue before going to the middle East. Photo's show a lighter colour on the lower control surfaces which the instructions call out as Sky, so that's what I've shown. The kit was, being of the short run type (and not as well moulded as S'Hobby kits), was hard going, mainly because of the clean-up required. I could have spent more time on test fitting and adjusting but wanted to get it done for the end of the MTO GB. All the parts were used, including engines and cowlings (the latter looking like they were hammered out in an Orc Workshop!), I scratch built a bit of a rear cockpit interior as none was provided in the kit, not even a seat! The kit decals went on well, but later showed silvering which I couldn't put right. Xtracrylic's for the exterior, Vallejo ModelAir for the interior. Overall I'm pleased with the result, it's a shame a lot of people will be put off as it has really fine surface detail and the cockpit wasn't bad in terms of detail, just added belts. At least I know what to expect when I get into doing the Beauforts I have ( I have another Beaufighter as well ). Davey.

This excellent site had a thread devoted to converting the Wirraway to Harvard Mk. 1 in 2012: Since then Special Hobby have introduced in 1/72 scale, two Wirraways: Special Hpbby 1/72 CA-3/5 Wirraway - First Blood over Rabaul Special Hobby 1/72 CAC CA-9 Wirraway What's the difference? Which shall I chose for converting? Incidentally, I think I can get away with a Harvard Mk.1 canopy from: Special Hobby 1/72 BT-9/NJ-1 US Trainer Plane. Thanks in advance for any help M.M.

This is my High Planes Sea Vixen FAW1 - I have to admit this model has sat on the shelf of doom for several years in an almost completed state with even some decals applied - I was inspired by the excellent posts of Sea Vixens and Buccaneers on BM to have another look at it and finally complete it. The High Planes kit is a limited run kit and can form the basis of a nice model with some work. I utilised some Airwaves Sea Vixen etches adapted to build up some cockpit detail for observer & pilot plus their Airbrake & ladder etch. Master pitot tubes & refuelling probe tip Also push moulded a new canopy as I stuffed up the vac form one in the kit scratch built arrester hook in down position as the model is a tail sitter Model Alliance decal sheet MA-72121 for the 890 Squadron markings I also used Copper foil tape for the windscreen framing & part of the canopy framing – it is a black backed self adhesive tape easily cut in to strips and bedded down with a tooth pick Copper foil tape on sliding canopy below After looking at the above photographs I decided the red don't walk markings were a bit too subdued so I traced over the lines with an Artline plastic tipped red pen & sprayed with Testors clear lacquer to seal it After completing the High Planes Sea Vixen FAW1 I unpacked my old Frog Sea Vixen FAW2 from its storage box - after seeing a photo of a Sea Vixen in this pose I thought I would try mounting the Frog Vixen in the same dramatic way - this was done by drilling into the wingtip and inserting brass rod to support the model - the underside was masked off and given a fresh coat of white as the original finish had yellowed over the years since first built - decals from the spares box & serials home printed - quite pleased how it looks from this angle and it has given an old model a new life - she is now back in the display case Now back to the Buccaneer .

  9. Having a moment of cockiness I decided to throw another in, when I stumbled above my more than just part build Precious Metal kit. I started this years ago and forgot what I did or did not. This kit is typical for High Planes (well compared to the other kits I have from them). It is a short run with thick light blue soft plastic and reasonalbe flesh. So there is more work needed than on the majority of IP kits. Other than IP there is some white metal (landing gear) and a vac canopy plus nice decals included. I also used some spare parts form ICM and Tamiya kits (cockpit and other stuff). The project came to a halt when my first attempt on the NMF finish failed and I started this over. Having rearranged my workspace last year I had dismantled my spray booth and the kit was shelfed, ready to receive a layer of Alclad: One thing I was very unhappy with is the wheel well. Should I ever build another Precious Metal (can happen) I will use the Aires wheel well. This is a hell of work but well worth it (see my other P-51 build here "part riveted"): So I took a few minutes to give it a coat of Alclad Chrome: As mentinoned in the pic there is a little thing calling for my attention: I closed the fuselage including spinner and canopy but still need to do some cutting - which certainly causes some dust... I guess I will work with a vac cleaner so this dust will not get into the fuselage and under the canopy... We will see. Rene
  10. This is the prototype of the Me 262. It first flew with just the piston engine. After a few flights to establish its handling and performance it was fitted with BMW jets. On its first flight with these both engines failed on climbout, losing all their turbine blades! A satisfactory landing was made and the engines sent back to BMW to think again. The aircraft was re-engined with Junkers Jumo engines. The kit has a ‘health warning’ on the box saying that it is for experienced modellers only and some cutting ,filling and sanding is required. Substitute ‘much’ for ‘some’ and that sums it up.The final straw was finding that the decals were most reluctant to leave the backing sheet and tended to shatter when they did! They were also most reluctant to stick to the model. Finish is Alclad Aluminium with odd panels in Dark Aluminium. apparently nobody is too sure about the actual a/c finish. The instuctions suggest different panels in varying colours of silver. I settled for just a couple of shades as the kit illustration make it look a bit like a Zebra. The rear portion of the engines was Alclad Steel. Any additional information would be welcome, particularly about the propellor. Either the single piston engined version or the three engined version can be built from this kit. ]
  11. Another one rescued from the back of the shed. One of the first short run kits I made - a High Planes 1:72 Beaufighter. Built well over 10 years ago when I was still using enamels (still brush painted). After cleaning up the dust and cobwebs (there was a spider living in one of the engine nacelles) she doesn't look too bad. I can't find the instructions so I can not remember what unit she belonged to, other than she is an early RAAF machine. Can't wait until I can get my hands on the new Airfix tooling!   13. Hello, I recently started the assembly of a pair of High Planes Mirage III kits. The in box review in pictures you can find on my blog: http://lietadielka.blogspot.fr/2012/05/mirage-iiio-nesher-s-high-planes-172.html. I would like finish both kits as an australian Mirages IIIO in a grey experimental camouflages. I'm currently working on an interiors.The basic cockpit color is a dark grey Tamiya acryl XF-24. The details are painted by various Vallejo, Revell Aqua and Humbrol Acryl colors. Pavol

  15. Hi everyone, Freightdog Models will have some nice new items on sale at Telford, this year our stand has moved but we are still in Hall 1, now opposite LSA Models on the end of isle 1H. This marks our first show as UK stockist for High Planes Models of Singapore. Stocks of Finger, Dagger and Nesher kits are already available, and for the show we have a very limited exclusive Plus Pack boxing combining the Finger kit with resin parts and FCM decals to produce a Brazilian Mirage IIIEBR F-103E. I also have some HPM short run kits and resin sets on the way (including a few Avon Sabre’s in 1/48 and 1/72). New decal sheets are ‘Keeping the Peace Pt.II’ in the Freightdog range in 1/72 including Spitfires, Mustang IV’s and a Corsair, and I are launching a new Blue Max decal range. The first sheet in 1/48 covers the F.2B Bristol Fighter in RAF service around the British Empire with five colourful options. Some conversion work is required to either the Eduard or Roden kits to produce a Mk.II, but nothing too taxing. In my resin range I have re-issued the EAP and Avro 720 multi-media kits, and have a new What-If conversion for the Blackburn Buccaneer P.139/2 AEW platform. Other resin items that are ready include X-4 missiles for the new Airfix FW-190, Harrier GR.3 corrected fin and TERMA pod for Tornado GR.4, all in 1/72. For 1/48 I have three Hurricane sets, a Mk.IV conversion, drop tanks and an improved spinner, all based on the new Italeri kit. Lastly I am announcing another new range at the show, this time a collaboration under the name of Guerrilla Models, please come over to the stand and see what coming is from Guerrilla in 2014.
