  1. Aircraft radiators and how to model them have on occasion been the topic on this excellent forum, for the Hawker Hurricane and Typhoon to name but two. l have recently completed a video about the Hawker Typhoon and the company who manufactured the radiator and oil cooler for it and for many other classic aircraft too such as the Spitfire, Lancaster and Mosquito. I hope you enjoy watching the video that l believe will provide modellers with plenty of useful photographic reference material. <CONTENT REMOVED - PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR INFO>
  2. While waiting for an injection windscreen for my Spitfire PR 11 I decided to make a start on my Hawker Typhoon FR.1b. As with most aircraft it all starts with the cockpit. There is a lot of conjecture over the colour with black walls and aluminium framework seeming to be correct for a bubble top so I went with that. As with all aircraft I build I used Eduards' cockpit zoom set to dress it up. And here it is installed in the fuselage. I built the car door type previously and forgot how bad the fit of the fuselage inserts was. I know Hasegawa did it so that they could minimise on the sprues but they could at least have designed the sides to fit better! I cut out the forward area of the cockpit area sides as per the instructions but now have nowhere to install the gunsight!. Has anyone else done the same? How did you get round it? Regards Mick
  3. Hi Friends! A very simple kit One difficuly: the conopy is made faceted, like Bf.109 I sharpened it Painted Gunze Enjoy watching!
  4. In case I manage to finish my Spitfire Mk XI early I will then start on this fella, a Hawker Typhoon FR 1B. Some Typhoons were converted to recce aircraft by removing the inboard cannon and fairing from the port wing and replaced with three downward facing cameras. The inboard starboard cannon was also remove to restore balance but the fairing was retained and a cine camera fitted inside it. The base kit is the Typhoon Mk 1b late: To convert it to an FR 1B I will use the Airwaves conversion kit, which is a single drop-in section for the wing. And here is a picture of an actual aircraft. Reading some information on these aircraft it appears that they were also known as PR 1Bs - one type only had one camera but I believe the three cameras were designated FR 1bs.
  5. Hi! I am the lucky owner of a DMC 1/32 Hawker Typhoon. Question: What glue do I use? Is superglue strong enough for the wing/fuselage joint? Cheers Hans J
  6. Have been working on four parts for a diorama which will include a Hawker Typhoon, Matador 0854 with Cole Crane Mk V11, a Willys Jeep and a Accumulator, this will be shown with the Typhoon engine hanging from the crane hook, being just replaced with a new one, I hope I can catch the moment. Have bought all the aftermarket stuff I think everyone knows what is out there. First picture is what I want to capture, photo is for reference only. Cleaned up a lot of the seams, filled a few holes etc etc and then painted aluminum Machined the shaft out of brass Started to add some detail to the controls Until next time, Regards Richard
  7. Hi all. Wanted to show off my latest build, a Hawker Typhoon from Airfix. The kit was really nice with nice detail and went together fast with no problems, except its tiny size. After some consultancy from my kids, the chosen scheme was this pretty cool looking and colorful shark mouth from 245 Squadron, 2nd Tactical Air Force based in Germany and RAF Warmwell, Dorset in June.August 1945. If anyone know anything interesting about this aircraft, please share. The kit was painted with Mission Models acrylic throughout, and they worked really well. I used the black primer as a base for black-basing, added some salt weathering, a RLM66 wash and some Tamiya weathering powders. Hope you enjoy, and please don't hesitate to give some constructive feedback. Regards, Isak
  8. Everyone ... I want to build a reasonably accurate Hawker Typhoon, in 1/48 scale. I have the Hasegawa / Italeri bubble top kit. I have a set of ‘Tempest’ tailplanes. I note that some aeroplanes had the 3 blade propeller, other the 4 blade. Can anyone point me to where I can obtain a 4 blade propeller? Not too desperate at the moment because this is at the ‘deep thinking’ (aka planning) stage but I’ve looked and looked but without success for 4 blade props *AT A REASONABLE PRICE!* in the UK. Thanks, fingers crossed, Jonny
  9. Hi All, Just got an email from Hannants; an item on my 'Watching List' has come in! The new 1/72 Airfix Hawker Typhoon: https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/AX02041A And on the Airfix site: https://www.airfix.com/uk-en/hawker-typhoon-ib-1-72.html Sounds like a new tool, anyone know for sure? Thanks, Charlie Apologies if this is covered elsewhere and I'm posting in the wrong forum!
  10. Hello everybody, With the recent, and sad, passing away of Wing Commander Tim Elkington I was reminded of a thread of his on the "Flypast" forum. It concerned an entry in his log book for the 9th September 1943 (I think he was on 1 Squadron at the time) in which he had hand-drawn a diagram of the upper wing surfaces of his Typhoon showing the black outer wings and white stripes associated with the Starkey markings. There was also a drawing of the underside wing markings, which showed that when combined with the standard Typhoon stripes, the Starkey markings made the Typhoon underside look like a zebra crossing!!! Two questions:- 1. Have any photographs of a Typhoon with Operation Starkey markings ever come to light? 2. Can anyone provide the serial and code letters of the Typhoon he was flying that day? (unfortunately the photo of his logbook didn't show these...) Chris - can you help??? Thanking you all in advance, SD
  11. Hi all - A very popular kit round these parts, here is my Airfix Hawker Typhoon in 1/72. I found the kit to be pretty good but not without problems - most of which were of my own making I'm sure. I did a few firsts on this build such as riveting, painted invasion stripes and doing a RAF camo scheme with an airbrush, most of which came out pretty well. I added an Eduard PE cockpit but aside from this, everything was out of the box. Painted using Tamiya Acrylics with a some Vallejo model air. Weathering using oils and pigments. WIP is here: Feedback and comments are welcome - thanks for looking!
  12. Hi all - having recently got back into the hobby and after a very nice welcome from everyone here, I thought I’d put my latest work in progress on here for some scrutiny- it’s the current Airfix typhoon which is a plane I’ve always loved - and Airfix kits seem to build pretty well (mostly) and they're nice and cheap. So with every build I’m trying to expand the skill set and try something new - this time I’m adding some pe parts from Eduard for the cockpit and attempting some riveting. I’m also going to go for some nice weathering on the fuselage using oils and maybe some double layer chipping... we’ll see how it goes. After 4 nights (about 8 hours) I have the following: My first photo etched part assembled and painted... I thought this was going to be a nightmare but it turned out okay I think. All done with a modeling knife and tweezers. Cockpit all done and ready for assembly- all that lovely detail that no one will ever see. So far so good. I painted the base colors with Tamiya cockpit green - used Tamiya panel line wash and chipping with a silver artist pencil which works surprisingly welling as it’s a pencil. Dry fit of the fuselage half’s seems okay. Some fiddling required on the cockpit seat. Glued, clamped and left to dry. I haven’t tried riveting before but love the extra detail it brings out - using this as a source and using my new riveting tool from trumpeter I hacked out rivets on the upper wings. The results are so so... I really need to figure out a better way to do this before doing the rest of the model. I used a transparent ruler to use but it kept slipping and so quite a few rivets went where they shouldn’t go. I was going to use label tape but the stuff I got was way too thin. If there any kiwis or aussies know a good brand to get for this job I’d appreciate it. That’s all for now - thanks for reading and for any feedback you have to offer. I’m only working on this for the moment so it should be a relatively quick build.
  13. Well a good friend of mine has asked me to build this amazing kit. So I am venturing out of my comy 1:48th zone and going large! There are a few aftermarket additions, namley the Eduard Interior PE, HG Fabric seatbely and Yahu instrument panel. I ambuliding MN666 'CG' which lead one of the first rocket attacks on the beach head on the 6th June 1944. This I hope is going to be a bit special, so I am going to take my time with this one! So I have started after giving everything a good warm wash. It is going together beautifully!
  14. This build was commissioned through the Hawker Typhoon Restoration Project http://hawkertyphoon.com/ who are aiming to restore to flight the world's only MkIb. All proceeds for the build go directly to the project. This one's abit special as it is for the son of GR Capt J R Baldwin, so I am honoured to be doing this for him. As usual Arfix kit is sublime with little fettling in putting it together. It is just a shame all that detail gets closed up! I used my go to paints: vallejo air and used Tamiya pigments for weathering. Monte masks supplied the serial number and JB II masks. You can follow the build and see more photos on: https://www.facebook.com/Mancavemodelsathome/
  15. Recently I became interested in Typhoons operated on D-Day or in the immediate aftermath (full invasion stripes). There are some good photos in Shores/Thomas, 2nd TAF and on the IWM-site. It seems that the 3-bladed propeller was more common at this time than the 4-bladed type, but on many photos you can’t tell because the engine is running. It is even more tricky with the tailplanes. On most photos I can’t say whether a Typhoon had the older small tailplane or the Tempest-type. Is there any trick or rule of thumb to decide these questions based on the existing photos? Thanks in advance Ole
  16. Well here she is. A labour of love, only additions are an Eduard cockpit, Yahu Instrument panel and HGW fabric seatbelt.
  17. I build models for the exciting project : Hawker Typhoon Preservation Group who are restoring a genuine and what will be the world's only flying Typhoon MKIB. There's been a bit of a rush on lately with customers wanting a quarter scale model of the Typhoon! So I have ended up building four at once! Three marked as the actual airframe 'RB396 although they wanted invasion stripes on her which she never had: therefore there is some artistic licence going on!; and the fourth one is the aircraft that first trialed the use of Napalm bombs in the UK which was flown by David Ince who sadly passed away this year. However the timing is perfect for these four as I have organised in partnership with Romsey Modellers a special Typhoon display at SMW 2017 next week, which is aiming to spread the word about the project, so if your off to SMW please come and see us either at the Typhoon display or at Tangmere Sector Modellers display in the same hall. The kit I used is the Italeri which is quite basic but goes together well and is enhanced by eduard cockpit set. Iv used Mission Models paints for the first time which worked beautifully: Decals are from xtradecal and their RAF number and letter set.
  18. Hi, Not another 1/24 Scale Airfix Hawker Typhoon, I hear you say, sorry, but yes. There are some excellent Typhoon builds here: Dances With Wolves being one. In my club I am know for doing something different, mainly rusted, or post apocalyptic stuff, you may have come across this: or this: So I am going to do my Typhoon as a museum restoration, inspired in some respect by the "Hawker Typhoon RB396" restoration, they have some great reference images. Where to start? I want to show as much of the fantastic interior that is hidden, and a restoration diorama is perfect for this, but it will require cutting up the fuselage (some of you will wince at that thought), and as it is a large model, I will remove the wings as this will allow me to have a smaller foot print on the club stand, and make transporting the finished article easier. Here are few pics to give you an idea of what I'm aiming for: Here are some pics of the work done so far: Removed the wing spars. Front spars cut off. Marked out the front section of the fuselage to be removed.... Test fit to see how it looks, it works... Then filled in the holes with plastic card: Let it dry then I will cut it match with the fuselage. Going to finish off the pilots "cage" tomorrow, need to add a few bits of additional stuff to the cage, for example the piece of metal and brackets that the panels would have fixed to, see image below: Thats it for now. Cheers Richard
  19. Hello Chaps, It's been a while since I posted, but my excuse is, I've been busy with hosting "Buddy Builds" on YouTube and Facebook. My latest buddy build that began on July 1st and ends on December 31st is called "The Spiffy Tiffy" buddy build....it's going pretty well so far with 37 participants and 47 models being built. I'm building two "Tiffy's", the first I just completed this week- a 1967 tooling, the Monogram 1/48 Hawker Typhoon Mk.1b, and on Monday August 7th, I'll be making a start on the Airfix 1/24th scale kit! This Monogram kit is as expected for a 50 yr old kit, raised panel line and rivet details, minimal detail in the cockpit, but, with some TLC, the addition of scratch-built seat-belts, a whip antenna, a UHF antenna and some fuse leads for the rockets, it can look reasonable. So here she is...I hope you like how she turned out If you'd like to see my "Full Build + Final Reveal" video for this build, here's is my YouTube link to it: Cheers, Martin
  20. This aircraft is something close to my heart as I am the membership and events secretary for the Hawker Typhoon Preservation Project, We are aiming to get the world's only flying Hawker Typhoon MkIb flying again. This kit is the superb Hasegawa kit with Eduard cockpit upgrade, and 4 prop spinner from Ultracast. The aircraft was delivered to 174 ‘Mauritius’ squadron on 4th Jan 1945, based at B.100 Goch, and received the code ‘XP-W’. RB396 was lost on operations and was recorded Cat ‘E’ on 1st Apr 1945. Originally equipped with bombs after conversion to the Typhoon (July 1943), 174 squadron converted to rockets by January 1944. The squadron spent the next few months attacking radar stations, flying bomb sites and German communication links in northern France. After D-Day they moved to Normandy providing close support for the Army and attacking German tanks and transport. By September 1944 they had moved to the Netherlands where their remit was offensive sweeps over Germany. On the 1st April 1945 RB396 was the mount of Flt Lt Chris W House setting out from Goch for an offensive sweep. Shortly after selecting his target and releasing his salvo of rockets RB396 was hit by flak, too low to bail out and rapidly losing height Flt Lt House force landed his aircraft to the North East of Denekamp. In the immediate aftermath of the attack the whereabouts of Chris House was not known and as squadron members returned to Goch they reported that he was seen to successfully force land RB396 and it was assumed taken POW, had he survived the landing. He had indeed survived and successfully evaded capture, making his way back to allied lines and much to the surprise of his comrades arrived back at the squadron on 5th April. After 174 squadron was disbanded on 8th April Chris House went on to complete further operations and remained in the RAF until retirement long after the war. 21. This is the last... OOB for the B, and much scratch for no name... More pictures next...

  23. RNoAF submitted the following query "Hi guys. Can you help me with the colour and markings of 198 squadrons Hawker Typhoon MM 987 TP-Z? And did it have a 3- or 4-blade propeller?" I suspect that this originates from one of the profile drawings in Osprey Aircraft of the Aces 27, Typhoon and Tempest, which I wrote and Chris Davy illustrated. I was very keen to illustrate Sqn Ldr Johnnie Baldwin's Typhoon TP-Z which featured in press photos taken some time in late February of early March 1944 and carries his scoreboard with 13.5 kills. Unfortunately neither his logbook nor the squadron records enabled identification of the serial number of this aircraft. Knowing that there were few sliding hood Typhoon in service at this time I examined the records of all the unit's Typhoons at the time and MM987 seemed to be the most likely. The profile was duly completed and I noted the tentative identification in the extended caption in the Colour Plates section at the end of the book, also noting that the aircraft had been in an accident on 4 March 1944. Years go by ... and I am in touch with the pilot of MM987 when it had the accident and his log reveals it was actually coded TP-V! dammit. The recent postings re PR-Z took me into this territory once again so I will see if I can find another suspect. Meanwhile, a question for RNoAF. Are you interested in TP-Z (Baldwin's aircraft with the kill markings) or MM987, now known to be TP-V? Both, incidentally had 3-blade props and the small tailplane. Chris Thomas
  24. Afternoon BM's. Finally finished Airfix's new(ish) Hawker Typhoon 1B. I opted for the later 1944 option in the kit armed with rockets and adorned with D-Day landing stripes as I've not done a model with these on yet. I tried a new chipping technique on this one which has given mixed results. Personally I think it's overdone but lesson learned. I opted to airbrush the yellow wing strips, D-Day stripes and band around the tail which was the right thing to do, as in my opinion the decals with this kit are as thick as card and they would have looked miserable. Built out of the box and made my own harnesses. Enjoy, comments as always welcome.
  25. Not sure if you are aware but there is a project to rebuild a Hawker Typhoon to flying condition. If successful this will be the only flying Typhoon in the world. If anyone is interested - they need your help and support. The project is on Facebook - just look up the Hawker Typhoon RB396 Restoration Project or take a look here (website is being updated) http://hawkertyphoon.com Go and take a look and if interested, follow the progress of the project or take a more active part...
