  1. Hi all. Our state show (QMHE for the locals) finished a week ago and as per usual I snaffled a few kits from the retailers, second hand dealer and the Sunday swap and sell. One of them was the 1/48 Academy Grumman F3F-2. Accurate Miniatures initially released the kit in 2000 and as most are aware they folded quite some time ago. Thankfully, numerous manufacturers have bought the moulds and those kits are now available again. Over the last few days I've painted and assembled the interior and engine. A small photo etch is provided that spruces the engine up with ignition leads. Followed by some painted and weathering it's come up a treat though I've made a tiny modification. The drive spline that attaches to the back of the propeller hub was a tight fit. I've installed some tube into the engine with an ID of 1.2mm and a corresponding piece with an OD of 1.2mm into the back of the prop hub. It allows a snug fit and aligns the prop with the centreline of the engine. The interior dresses up nicely with some paint and dark washes. I drilled the instrument faces so I could lay the decal onto the back of the IP. I sanded the IP thinner than it was but not thin enough as you can't really see the dial faces. For anyone building it I suggest laying the decals straight onto the painted kit item. Considering this a 23 year kit, everything so far has gone together effortlessly. More soon. 2. Hello everyone, Id like to present my take on the Accurate Miniature 1/48 Grumman F3F-2. It is part of my ongoing Gregory Boyington Series. After commissioning in 1936 he was first stationed at Marine Fighting One in Virginia. He started hos career in Boeing F4B fighters. He was transferred in 1937 to Marine Fighting Two in San Diego and would be moving up to the Navy’s newest fighter the Grumman F3F. Being the S.o.P. was to receive the aircraft assignment at the briefing it is assumed he probably flew just about all the aircraft while in the Squadron. So I chose the aircraft number and color at random. I will apologize upfront but I have attempted rigging now in Three scales and failed every time. Its just not worth my sanity or loss of enjoyment. Please feel free to ask questions, post comments or visit my build thread. Dennis
  3. Hello everybody... This is my first entry for the group-build. It is Airfix’s P-40/Hawk 81, and I will be doing it in the marking’s of Gregory Boyington’s #21. Most of you are aware of my favorite pilot projects, the first one was/is Josef Pips Priller. The second is Robert Stanford Tuck, This will be the beginning of the third. Boyington was a pilot and a commander that cared more about people he served with than regulations. He was a Bull of a man and a heck of a brawler. However if I had to go to war I don't think I’d want to go into combat with anyone else on my wing. Rest in Piece “Pappy”. I picked this up in August for a song. Here are the obligatory sprue shots. Please feel free to ask questions, post comments, and or add thoughts. 4. Hi all, I have the Accurate Miniatures Grumman F3F-2 kit to start but could do with some help on the finish/paint call outs. The instructions say the fuselage was aluminium and gives call outs for G.S. Aqueous 8/Humbrol 56/Xtra Color X142 amongst others. The instructions say the wings (and I assume the tailplanes although that is not mentioned) were "doped taunt and painted with silver lacquer" which the instructions call "Silver doped fabric" but aside from saying this resulted in a "highly reflective finish, noticeably brighter than the fuselage" it does not give a paint reference call out for it. So two part question, can I use anything from the Alclad 2 range for the aluminium finish, I know there are various types (Aluminium//Polished Aluminium/Airframe Aluminium/White Aluminium/Dark Aluminium) but I tend to associate these with modern fighter jets and don't know if appropriate for an inter-war biplane or should I stick with the callouts on the instruction sheet? And is there a paint I can use for the 'silver doped fabric' finish on the wings and I assume tailplanes? The one stipulation for this colour I suppose is that it must be brighter than the aluminium fuselage? Thanks in advance, Pete
