  2. B-29 Superfortress Walkaround & Combat Chronicles Squadron Signal (25054 & 36002) These two books from Squadron stand reviewing together because of their subject matter, the gigantic heavy bomber that had the unenviable task of dropping the first atomic bombs on Japan. Although the subject is the same, their style and content are very different. The Walkaround is heavy on the pictures and the Combat Chronicles book has a balance of pictures and words, so should keep you occupied for quite a while. B-29 Superfortress Walkaround This landscape format book starts with the usual introduction and brief history of the type, and then the pictures begin. The content is broken down into external airframe, a short section on bomb types carried by the B-29, crew areas, some attractive profiles, and finally some overall shots of the aircraft and details of the remaining airframes. The photos are a mixture of contemporary and modern, and there are some nice colour shots of the aircraft in service, including a number of examples of the more colourful nose-art that was daubed on the nose are of many airframes. As well as the host of well captioned photos, there are also sections devoted to explaining the coding of the various squadrons that few the B-29 in the 58th Airwing. Picture quality is first-rate, and the detail shown up within the book's pages is excellent, making it the perfect companion to a detailed build in any scale. The inclusion of profiles to show the variation in markings is good, and as it is limited to only four pages, it avoids looking like "filler" to bump up the page count. An excellent reference tome. Highly recommended. B-29 Superfortress Combat Chronicles The second book is different in that it is printed in portrait orientation, and contains a great deal of reading material. It is packed full of eye-witness accounts of the B-29's exploits both as a bomber, and as an occasional courier delivering supplies for the hard-pressed PoWs. I won't spoil your read by giving up too much detail, but the accounts detail individual missions, campaigns and their outcomes, backed up with official photo-reconnaissance photos, and shots from the ground and air, some of which were taken during the missions themselves. The book itself is more of an inspiration and background reading tool for the modeller than a reference to assist in building a B-29, but the candid nature of some of the photos is quite touching – especially the shot of a stricken B-29 making its final drive to the ground, wreathed in flames. A great read, and some lovely pictures make this an easy recommendation. Review sample courtesy of
