  1. In the 1970’s and 80’s, the Spanish flag carrier Iberia had a fleet of some fifty DC-9 aircraft. As a 14-year-old plane spotter in 1969, I snapped a picture of the company’s DC-9-32 during a visit with my dad to the Copenhagen Kastrup Airport. The plane was registered EC-BIS and christened "Ciudad de Alicante". In a sudden nostalgic plane spotter mood I decided to build a model of that very plane. I ordered a 1/144 scale Fly Models kit, which was pretty simple but in my opinion all the essential details were there. The model went easily together although some sanding and putty was needed. For the old Iberia livery I ordered a high-quality sheet from the BOA, which contained the registrations and names for 24 different Iberian DC-9’s including the EC-BIS. I also used Authentic Airliners Decals decals for the cockpit and cabin windows. The dark gray cabin windows were printed in the cheat line of the BOA decal but since I wanted a more authentic look and decided to attach the AD decals on top of them. The windows were exactly of the same size but the distance between them was just slightly different so I had to cut out each window from the AD sheet and stick the 70 windows in place one by one. An entire day was spent in that job! I painted the white areas of the plane with Tamiya Fine surface primer, which I coated with Tamiya gloss varnish spray TS 13. I used Alclad's white aluminum on the wings, stabilizers and the lower part of the fuselage. The edges of the wings and stabilizers were sprayed with Alclad's polished aluminum. I also used Humbrol and Vallejo colors for the smaller details. I also scratched several details into the machine, e.g. pitot tubes, beacon lights, antennas, etc. In the summer of 1969 I made a round trip of the Scandinavian capitals with my dad. In Copenhagen I insisted that we visit the kerosene smelling Kastrup airport instead of seeing the Little mermaid statue or the Tivoli theme park. Well, my dad wasn't at all amused but after all we did go to the nice and busy airport where I could snap a picture of the Iberia DC-9-32 🙂
  2. I picked this out the stash looking for a quick single seater build having never built a Fly Models kit before and to be honest, I nearly did not make it to the end with this one, a tricky and difficult build (for me anyway) and got really frustrated by the somewhat pointless resin parts which personally I don't think adds anything other than more time and complexity. That said, happy with end result and on balance, I am just pleased we have a modern 1/72 G.50 kit out there and I would do another Fly Models kit, I just found this one a bit of a drag (off and on for about 6 months!)
  3. This was my first GB entry ever, a Hawker Hurricane Mk IIb built for the Fancy French GB. It's also part of my Hawker Hurricanes around the world project--the first instalment of the second phase, which is to represent Hurricanes in non-UK, Allied markings. I used the Fly Mk IIb kit, which was expensive and has its issues (mostly related to the camo call-outs, decals, etc. (@Troy Smith has much to say in this regard!), but in the end I was quite happy with it and how it came together. I did borrow a spinner from an Arma kit and replaced some of the decals with Print Scale. I kept the WIP separate from the larger project, so it is here: This is the plane I was modeling: And here is my version in b&w: And, now, in colour!
  4. I am in the middle of a project I am calling "Hawker Hurricanes around the world." I've divided this project into three phases. In phase one I modeled one Hawker Hurricane in markings from each of Australia, North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. I am now into phase two, which is to model Hurricanes in the markings of every other Allied nation that flew them, except for the RAF and those that wore RAF markings (e.g., Canada and New Zealand). Here is the WIP: As part of phase two I am modeling a Free French Hawker Hurricane, and I put off starting it until this week so that I could join my first Group Build! I went back and forth between whether this would be an Mk I or an Mk IIb, but have settled on BG707, an Mk IIb. I will be using this Fly kit. There is some controversy over the camo scheme and markings this Hurc is wearing, but I intend to use the standard dark earth/middle stone over azure blue, and will figure out the markings later!
  5. The DC-9 is one of my favourite airliners. So many classic liveries look smart on that plane type. I've always liked the KLM scheme, whether it be the old stripe tail or the new blue fuselage livery. I built this KLM DC-9-15 from a Fly Models kit with Polish manufactured Techmod decals. They were quite fragile and I had to correct them at various locations. The decals were a tough fight to win. The cockpit window decals I ordered from Authentic Airliners. The kit was quite simple and easy to assemble. I had to modify certain parts and add scratch built details and there was some puttying and sanding to be done. I painted the white upper fuselage with Tamiya Fine Surface Primer that I then covered with Tamiya gloss varnish TS-13. As to the metal colour areas of the plane I primed them first with Tamiya black TS-14. After having let the black cure properly I sprayed the areas with AK Extreme metal aluminium. For the details I also used Vallejo acrylics and Humbrol enamels,
  6. Good evening all, I hope you are all keeping safe and well. Would their be any interest in some laser decals for the newly released 1/72 Fly Models Bristol Freighters? All the best Ray
  7. Dear fellow Britmodellers, here's my 1/72 Fly Models Fiat G.50bis, built from the box. This is a multi-media kit consisting of plastic and resin parts. I painted with Gunze/Mr.Hobby acrylics, mixed to match the Italian AF colors. Photographs by Wolfgang Rabel. A full build review will appear in an upcoming edition of Scale Aviation Modeller International. Thanks for your interest, best greetings from Vienna! Roman
  8. Finally got around to starting. Nice Hurricane to celebrate the 100 years of the RAF Work starts with the cockpit just for a change. This feels like a limited run kit, but the fit isn't terrible mix of PE, Resin and Plastic Then on with the resin seat and belts Peter
  9. Hi, I found today in aviationmegastore web page an announcement from 2008 (!) about "future release" of Caproni Ca-111 http://www.aviationmegastore.com/caproni-ca111-72002-fly-models-fly72002-scale-modelling/product/?shopid=LM4b4121de8b1a764a732c64607f&action=prodinfo&parent_id=212&art=80400 Is there any knowledge, thay FLY will continue Caproni family, after Ca 101 with 7 and 9 cylinder engines they will issue also Ca 111 and perhaps Ca 133 and Ca 148? Regards J-W
  10. Finally getting around to posting this build which I've been working on for about a month on and off. All being well it should be completed by the deadline for this GB. Thoughts on the kit: I'm pretty happy with it all said. The detail is refined and crisp, the resin adds a certain something, and it goes together well for a limited run kit. The only bits that I've had significant trouble with have been fitting the tub to the fuselage and installing the instrument panel, both of which were probably my fault. For reasons best known to myself I decided to try to force the fuselage together as I found the cockpit floor seemed to be a bit wide, and I ended up with horrendous cracking all the way up one side of the fuselage. I stabilised this with some CA and made good with filler and you can't see anything now so all's well that ends well. The other problem was the instrument panel, I think I fitted it at the wrong stage and really struggled to get it into the cockpit. I ended up having to shave bits off the edges to get it to sit right, it's still not great but passes casual inspection. I realise that the panel is incorrect for a T5 but I'm not too fussed as the canopy with be closed. I've just sprayed the intakes and will be fitting them next. After that, it's decalling and adding aerials etc. Cheers Liam
  11. Well, here we are. I'll be building the Fly JP 5 like Filler. All being well I'll be starting some time in the next few weeks once my Wessex is completed. I'm looking forward to adding this one to the collection and will appreciate and tips, advice, and feedback as I go along. My first impressions of the kit are that it's nicely moulded with sharp detail, I've not built a limited run kit before so no doubt I'll come across a few issues but it can't be any worse than some of the 50 year old airfix kits that I've done before.
  12. Hi all This rolled off the production line today. Its a rebuild. I built it in DHL Colors about 3 years back, i posted it on her and a lot of people probably cried! I stripped the paint off and the glue, it then sat untouched for a couple months. I rebuilt it early last year, it isnt my best, but its been sitting on the shelf of desper ever since. I decided it waas time to get it finished, so i looked for a scheme i liked, saw the two six one and ordered away, today the decals arrived. On the aircraft straight away, couldnt resist. Not my best, but im happy with it. Thanks Enjoy Thanks
