  1. If you're not used to how to send other members of the forum individual messages that will only be read by them and not the rest of the forum, this is how to do it. Click/tap on the little envelope icon in the top right of the forum page. Choose Compose New. Complete the To box with the name of the member(s) you want to talk to, pressing tab if you're sending a message to more than one. This must be correctly spelt for them to receive it, and the forum will suggest names based on what you've typed already. Complete the Subject box with a brief description of what you wanted to talk to them about. Type all your verbiage in the Message box in the usual polite & respectful manner, and remember to sign it with your real name, as I for one like to talk to real people rather than silly user names. Click/Tap Send once you're happy with your missive, remembering that it's a good idea to re-read anything you type to cut down on spelling mistakes and to see whether it could be misinterpreted, thereby causing offence. Wait for a response, and choose Reply if you get one and you're not done talking. If you get a response, just click/tap on the message in your Notification list, and it will take you there.   2. Posting pictures on the new forum version couldn't be easier, and you don't even need the old Image button that looked like a Polaroid of a tree any more. It is so simple that you'll wonder why you even needed to ask Firstly though, if you're a long-time user of the forum you'll know that we don't allow images to be uploaded to the forum as attachments. It's just not secure, and it would overload our server's storage capability and burn through our data quicker than you can imagine. Once you need more storage and more data allowance, that increases costs. A good enough reason not to do that on its own! If you don't yet have a photo host, have a look here first, then come back and read the rest. Ok - assuming you already have your photos hosted online somewhere, you just copy the DIRECT link from wherever it is (Photobucket, Flickr, you name it), and you paste it into your posting window. Press either enter, or space, and SPANG! The forum software will automatically convert it to a photo. If for some reason you didn't want it as a photo, a little notification bar appears at the bottom of your posting window to give you the opportunity to undo the action. Look smug. You've learned how to post a photo. Told you it was simple, didn't I? If you've got a lot of photos to post that are numbered sequentially or with slight changes to the filename, you can post those easily too. Paste your image as above, but before you press space or return, just edit the filename to the next in the sequence. Rinse & repeat as necessary until you run out of pictures. Pretty simple, eh? If for some reason you have SPACES in your URL (why would you do that????), or it doesn't seem to be working with the automatic system, don't panic. Down at the bottom right of your posting window, there is a button called Insert Other Media. Click that and choose Insert Image from URL and enter your URL in the box that pops up. Save that and you should have a pic when the screen finishes loading it. "What's a URL" you might be wondering? It stands for Universal Resource Locator, and is a short form of "web address". You know - the thingy that begins with http:// and has lots of fun characters after it. You'll find the URL for this page at the top of your browser in a long box that is called your Address Bar

There comes a time in everyone's life that they must consider changing their passwords, either because they feel like it, or because a password used elsewhere has been breached, so they want to cut it out of the loop. It's a piece of cake to do, especially if you can log into the site as normal. From the main forum page, click on the arrow next to your username, and choose Settings> That will bring up the following page: Just click/tap on the Change button that we've highlighted in red above for your ease, and follow the instructions to change your password, ensuring that it's a new one, isn't something daft like "password1234" or any of those other passwords that are ridiculously easy for hackers to guess. If you can't remember lots of different passwords, treat yourself to a Password Manager app rather than use the same password for everything. It's not a secure behaviour anymore.
  4. Some of you may have wondered when you get an extra roundel and name tag as your post count goes up, and what the various levels are. It's totally irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, but some folks like to know just to satisfy their own curiosity. No, we're not trying to encourage stalking, but if you want to be sure to catch every utterance from any member, whether it's a friend, a modeller you admire, someone hilarious, or just a good raconteur, you can now do so with the Following options. When you decide who you want to follow, you can either visit their profile either by searching for them, clicking on their name next to a post, or by viewing the online members if they're currently visible. choose +Follow Member from their header, choose whether to do so anonymously or not, and set up your notification preferences. you can also unfollow them in the same way if they get a bit tedious or are constantly posting new FAQ topics and it's doing your head in

    Smart Quotes

    Back in the old version of the forum, we were forever having to clean up posts where someone had just pressed "Quote" and included a boat-load of pictures that were duplicated from the original post and therefore not needed. This exercised everyone's scroll wheel far too much and annoyed a surprisingly large number of people. No longer is this necessary if you read this topic, which you clearly are. Now we have smart quote, and it's incredibly simple to quote a portion of a post or even just a word! Highlight the part of the other person's post you wanted to quote - selecting from left to right seems most reliable. Up pops a little Quote This button. Click that menu and a new post with just the info you wanted appears for you to finish off with a reply. Cool, eh?

If you are having problems using the forum from a computer standpoint because something is misbehaving, the pages aren't displaying properly, or you just can't access the site at times, here are a few useful pointers and tips to help you diagnose the problem, and if you can't fix it yourself you can at least post a thread asking for help in "Help & Support" that will have lots of useful information that will help others to help you. You won't believe how unhelpful it is when someone posts "The forum's not working - what have you done to it?", as it doesn't give us a jot of information from which to start helping you. The list below should give you at least some opportunity to help yourself, or at least rule out some issues, which will again help us to help you. Have a read Try to do the same thing with a different browser than your current one, and if it works, you may have a problem with your browser. If you are using Internet Explorer or Edge, which is pretty much the same thing, try a different browser for everyone's sake, as MS have really ruined the previous leading internet browser with LOTS of incompatibilities with the internet. Deactivate all your browser add-ins and see if it stops this behaviour. If you don't know how, Google "Disabling add-ins on XXXXX" where XXXXX is the name of your browser. Follow those instructions, then come back and see what's going on here. If it works, add them back one-by-one until it breaks. You'll know which one to get rid of then. It would be helpful if you made a post in help & support to let people know that an add-in is toxic to the forum. Post your setup to the forum with details of your device type, Operating System, Processor and memory too if it's a PC, and what browser you are currently using. It may trigger a memory from another member. Examples of Operating Systems (OSes) are Windows 7, Windows 10 (PCs), OSX (Macs), Android (tablets and phones), iOS (iPhones), Windows Phone (very few phones), Linux in some flavour or other, Ubuntu, Mint, Debian, CentOS etc. Popular browsers include Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera and sadly, Internet Explorer (See above). Disable all but ONE antivirus or malware software if you run more than one. Running more than one may seem like a good idea to the uninitiated, but they can often squabble over resources and cause problems. If you have another device in the house (or wherever you are), try accessing the site from there with the same browser (if possible) and with a different one. If the site seems ok there, you can isolate the problem to your device. If you have security software that is constantly clearing caches and deleting cookies, that's going to slow down your browsing experience because your device will have to reload everything every time. If you're on a metered connection (4G/3G data) it'll also cost you more of your precious data. Create an exception for the forum, or switch it off whilst browsing. Clear your browser's cache. Corrupted cache data isn't a major issue for a device in general, but if it's being reused to save re-downloading something (an emoji for example), it may be causing problems. Clear any Britmodeller cookies from your browser. You can usually list your cookies, and any that have "britmodeller.com" in them can be deleted, but you'll have to re-login, so remember your username and password before you do. If you can't access the forum from (for example) your PC, but you can from your phone or work PC, there's a possility that our server's defences have identified you as a 'bot that have in the past tried to take down our server through spite and general malice. If that's the case, drop me (Mike) a PM from your unaffected device and tell me the IP address of the device that is blocked. You can find that by Googling "What's my IP address" from the affected device, and you'll get a number like "" back. I can then flush any block out of the defence software's system for you, and you'll be back on immediately. We'd like to not have to run these defences, but while there are morons out there that think it's clever, we have to protect ourselves so that you guys don't have to talk to your family After trying all the above, if you've not managed to fix yourself, come back with as much information as you can muster and be as specific as your can, which will allow the Mods and IT literate helpful members to assist. Your query should include all the stuff you tried above, your device details, and if you get any error messages, either take a screen shot and post that in your query, or write down the error message, as it's highly likely the text of the error message will be important. "I got an error message" gives us nothing useful to go on, sadly. I'll add any more items I can think of along the line, and if you've tried all these things before you post your request for help, I'll be very happy
  8. We've had Tags for quite a while, and quite a lot of folks haven't quite figured them out. The forum uses them as additional search parameters to help you find things using words that aren't in your topic title. For example, if your topic title is as follows: AMK Mig-31BS 1:48 Those terms don't need to be in your Tags. You could add Foxhound, Soviet and Cold War, but adding any of the words in your topic title is just a waste of your time & finger power. Use them to add other search terms, such as nicknames, dates, the operator etc., that will give searchers more ammunition

We've had a few requests from various people (especially at shows) for a badge that members can use to tell folks who they are, so I've designed a new one to replace the old clunker we used to use. You can see a small example below, and download the full sized version here to either print out on paper or card, laminate, put in a badge holder, or just staple to your chest* if you're a Download the full-size version here Alternatively, I've found a company on eBay that print ID badges onto a credit-card sized (86mm x 54mm) plastic card at £2.95 delivered in the UK, which you can put in either a lanyard style holder, a clip-on plastic holder which both cost only a couple of quid, or again if you're a staple to your nipple*. Badge Lanyard Clip-on holder Staple gun* You can personalise your badge before you send it off in Photoshop if you have it, or another paint package by adding your name in the boxes, then place your order, and email them your graphic to info@teeto.co.uk. Mine should be here early next week, so I'll let you know how that pans out & post a photo. * Clearly, I wouldn't really suggest you staple anything to yourself. That would be silly If you're getting a vague feeling of deja vu all over again, that's because this is just an update of a re-post of an announcement I made a while ago.     The new Emoticon/Smiley system brings up a pop-up window when you click on the smiley button in your posting window. This only shows a fraction of our frankly extravagant selection, the rest of which are available by clicking on the little Categories Dropdown, and choosing Emoticons, which at time of writing shows 204 of them. They should populate the little box and you can choose at will. Alternatively, if you have a good memory, you can enter them directly whilst typing by using their keyboard shortcuts, which automatically convert to smileys the moment you leave them be. For example, the man stroking his chin is achieved by : hmmm: without the space after the first colon, so you get Hovering over a smiley in the box will give you its keyboard shortcut. Just remember the ones you use most, and you'll never have to move your hands from the keyboard to mouse and back again after hunting for a smiley. It's the only way to travel
  11. With Activity Streams you can create your own custom searches that return these "streams" with whatever you have set it up to give you. You can also send a Stream to anyone else just by sending them a link to your Stream results. For example, I've created the Streams below for viewing Content of specific genres, which includes all the forums in that genre, plus all the reviews from that genre. Have a click and you should hopefully see what I mean. If you like those Streams, you can make them appear in your Custom Streams drop-down under the Activity tab. It will also pop-up with a message as follows: There is a button on the right hand side that says Add To My Streams. Click that if you think you'd like to have access to that in the future. If not, just do something else If you add it, it will appear in your Activity > My Activity Streams under the Custom Streams header

If you've been delving around in the posts from the olden days, you could encounter a topic that is full of square brackets [ and ] and what's called BBCode, which was under the hood in the old forum software. This is what's going on in the background at the moment. All the content is being parsed, or converted to the new schema, and it's working backwards from newest to oldest. It's at around 50% of the way through the process as I write this, so there's still a big chunk of the forum that looks squiffy, but eventually it'll all look ok
  13. The latest versions of all the popular browsers can do what's called "push notifications" via your browser. That means it can deliver your notifications about topics and such like without you refreshing the screen. When you first visit the site, it asks the question "Britmodeller Wants to Show Notifications", and you should either allow it or not. If you allow it, it permits the pop-up notifications to come through to keep you informed while you're browsing, even if you're not on that tab at the time. If you don't permit it, you won't get all the notifications and might miss posts, messages etc., but if that's what you want, then that's what you need to do. You can always permit or deny BM permission later from your Control Panel > Account Settings > Notifications. Just tick or untick the relevant options and you're off.
  14. Sometimes people say that they find signatures annoying, and at times I have to agree with them. They can be a bit obtrusive, which was one of the reasons why we limit their size. They also increase the amount of scrolling through topics that you have to do, so you can turn them ALL off from your Control Panel under Settings > View Signatures. If you don't want to turn them all off, but some people's are getting on your nerves or the flashing of their gifs are freaking you out, you now have the option to turn them off individually, while leaving the rest visible. If you look at the little faint grey line that separates posts from signatures, you will see a little X at the rightmost end. Click that and you will be either able to hide everyone's signatures, or just that one. Another useful tool, especially if you are browsing the forum on a mobile device via 3G or 4G and you have a limited data allowance, or your scroll finger needs a rest
  15. One or two members (Thanks Ced) have mentioned that all their notifications have been set to immediate, and they're getting a lot of things popping up and commanding their attention. This is all configurable: Go into your Account Settings > Notification Settings and choose which ones you can live without, and which you deem to be essential, ticking and unticking as you go. Click here for a shortcut. Scroll down before you leave, and there are more settings that allow you greater control of your notifications from Nothing to Everything and all places in between. Click save and you're done.
  16. Sometimes when we get a new PC, tablet, phone, browser, don't log in for a week or more, or just clear our cache we have to re-log in. If you haven't used your browser's facility to save it, you will need to re-enter it. You did remember it, didn't you? No... didn't think so. Firstly, make sure you're using your new User Name, which is the same as your Display Name was under the old regime. Next to the login box there will be a Forgot Password link. Click it. Follow the process, waiting for the ReCatchpa security check to load before you blunder on. Wait for the email, and check your Spam folder if it doesn't arrive. That's particularly relevant to Gmail and some other mail hosts. Follow the instructions in the email carefully and you should be able to get back in. if none of that works, email one of the Mods from the links on the site. We don't like resetting passwords manually because of security concerns, but if that's the only way, then we'll do it.
  17. Most if not all modern browsers have built-in spell checkers these days, so take advantage of the feature that will help you to sound more erudite with very little effort. If you don't get little squiggly lines under your words when you spell them wrong (before you submit the post), then you will probably need to check the settings of your browser to turn it on and select your language of preference. Why language? Well the American spelling of Colour is Color, and if you spell it the British way and get a squiggly line under it, you need to change your language to English (UK). How do you do that? All I can say is go into the settings of your browser and have a root about. There are so many different browsers available now that it would be impossible and impractical for us to show you how each one works, so if you want to know how to do it in your browser of choice, just Google "language and spell check settings in XXXX" where XXXX is your browser's name. While you're at it, make sure you have the latest version of your browser, as the older your version is, the more chance it has of malfunctioning with a modern website like ours
  18. In version 4 the old and confusing Login Name and Display Name were ditched in favour of just one User Name. Your Display Name was used in the conversion, so instead of your old login name, just type in your display name instead. If you can't remember it, give yourself a cuff up the back of your head and go through the lost username/I'm a Nitwit notification process at the Login screen.
  19. You know how sometimes you want someone to see something you have said on the forum, and yet it's a pain to PM them and paste a link? not any more! If you want someone to see, such as a Mod or a friend, or just someone you know will have an answer for you, you must first know their name. We'll take me as an example, but if you over-use it I will track you down and I will kill you. Maybe not, but I might glare at you a bit, reminiscent of a rather large and angry baby. Back on topic. Type the @ symbol and immediately start typing the name of the person you're trying to attract to the conversation. A drop-down menu will pop out of your typing giving you some name options from the member list. Choose the correct one and it will turn into a blue square with round edges. Your quarry will receive a notification that they've been "mentioned". Please don't over-use this feature, as it will get annoying for anyone that's being constantly shouted to have a look at your posts.
  20. There are two ways of doing it, both of which revolve around the "View Original" button in the top of your OneDrive screen. Click View Original, and copy the link with a right-click Copy Link Location 1st Method, Click the image button, and paste in (CTRL+V) your link, removing the ? and everything after it. See the code below for an example OneDrive link. 2nd Method, Paste the image code into an IMG tag using the raw editor, as below again removing the? and everything after it. Don't paste that link into your browser if you're a bit squeamish, as it's a picture I happened on that was hosted on OneDrive. It's a hand with a bit of a cut in it, covered in plasters. You're going to do it now, aren't you?

Due to the security issues that attaching images in the forums poses, we don't allow attachments, but you can still post your images within any forum thread by linking to an image that's already online, using the Insert Image button marked (1) in the Post toolbar, as shown below: If the image isn't already online, you will need to make it available online so that you can link it to the post you're making. To do that, you'll either need your own webspace (and if you have that, you'll probably not be reading this anyway), or one of the common online photo or cloud service sites that have sprung up to allow people to store their photos on the web for just such purposes. There are many sites that are available out there, but Photobucket seems to be the most ubiquitous, so this guide has been written with Photobucket in mind, but if you already have an account with another provider, they're all broadly similar, so read on. You'll need to register & provide a little information about yourself first, which is moderately painless. You'll then have to ignore the advances of Photobucket's sponsors (or not - your choice). Then you'll be free to log in to your account. To post an image, you'll see the screen below, and you should then browse to the folder where your picture is, by clicking the "Choose Photos & Videos" button, or use some of the other options in the tabs at the top of the area. Give the photo a descriptive name if you like, and press the "Submit" button. Your image will be uploaded, and will appear as a thumbnail in your library screen. Now you have uploaded, you want to embed the image into your post. Click on the three parallel lines marked (1) below, and up pops the menu also shown. Choose "Share", which is marked as (2) below: This brings up the Share dialog, as seen below: Don't be fooled by the IMG option, as that copies some rather ungainly code into your clipboard that isn't properly compatible with modern forum software. Instead, go for the "Direct" option, which is marked (1) in the picture above. Clicking on the text or anywhere in the box will copy this to your clipboard. Now, you just need to paste that where you want it in your post by clicking on the "Image" button in your post, after positioning your cursor where you want it within the forum's posting window. Press the button with the tree on it marked (1) in the picture below: If you're using the Rich Text editor, you'll see your image immediately, but if you're oldskool or hardcore and sometimes use the raw editor, you'll need to add the IMG tag around your code so it looks like this: That's as simple as adding the opening square bracket ([) and IMG at the beginning, and a closing square bracket (]) at the end of your image URL, and you'll see the picture itself only when you Preview or Post your missive. Useful Tips Try to keep the size of any images you're posting to (or below) 1280 x 850 pixels. That way, you're pretty sure that most people will be able to see the whole picture on their screen without scrolling, as most people have screen resolutions of 1920x1080 or more these days. Some laptops are running at less than this, but in general, even your smartphone should be able to show this size without removing any of the screen furniture that comes with most browsers. If you have photo editing software, check out the software's help files and find out how to optimise your pictures for display on the web. Just running them through your software to compress them down a bit can save loads of kilobytes of space, which all takes time to download when someone views your pictures. Also, a cropped picture can often look better, as it cuts out all the dead space around the subject matter. It has the added benefit of loading quicker too, as your picture isn't bloated by all that sky or grass in the shot. If you have a free hosting package from Photobucket or similar, make sure that you don't move or remove your pictures in the future, or they'll also disappear from your thread here. If you post something massively popular, you might exceed your bandwidth allowance, and end up showing nothing but a "look who's popular" message instead of your photos. The only option there is to get a more fully-featured account, which usually costs money, or spread your photos around several accounts with different providers. Time consuming, but it'll help you avoid costs. NOTE: There are other ways of accomplishing the same task using other options within Photobucket and the forum software, but these are the simplest to help novices to gain confidence. Here's a quick and easy way of showing your allegiance to numerous Group Builds, put up a slide-show of your rceent builds, or just show multiple small pics you wanted in your signature, without falling foul of the Mods asking you to reduce the size of your signature to save people from RSI and broken scroll-wheels on their mice. Go to an online Gif Creator website - I used http://www.gifmaker.me for this example, but Google will turn up plenty of varying quality. Make a folder on your computer containing all the images you want to upload, and click on the Upload Images button, selecting all that you want to upload with CTRL+click (or CTRL+A if you want them all). Wait for them to upload after you press Open, and then fiddle with the size settings, as well as the animation speed. I found 2,000 milliseconds (2 secs) to be a useful speed to give people time to look without being too boring. Here's a random one that I knocked up in a couple of minutes using some GB Banners I pinched from people's signatures: Dead simple, and you then just have to download it, upload it to your photo-hosting site, and add it to your signature. Remember to check the maximum sizing before you do, or we'll still beat you with clubs
