I was bought up in the village of Lakenheath in Suffolk, during the 70's and 80's......I won 2 prizes on the Round the World In an Airfix Model page (A worthy cause and worth following!). I won a 1/48 Revell F4D and an AFV Club F5E....I hadn't built a model since I joined the Parachute Regiment in 1986...now retired after 25 years, I thought I would start again, using the 2 models as a refresher and starting a USAFE project in 1/48. I remember that night in 1986 when the whole 48TFW launched to raid Libya, and pretty much everything at Mildenhall launched to support....also spendinmg loads of the summer hols at the warren spotting....great days! Anyways, I have made the following - lots of issues, mistakes, but hey its fun and they go on my boys ceiling! F4D - XtraDecals, hand brush painted - 1st model in 25 years....yes lots of mistakes etc....loved these smokey old aircraft, noisy launching in the mornings! I used Florys for the wash and weathered with some oil paints and turps....another new experience!! Now the F5E Tiger II - In RAF Alconbury colours, using the Alconbury Gomer Decal set....note the PJ pilot, complete with Russian star on the helmet and an attempt at the 527 TFS badge! This was my first ever attempt with an airbrush (I know pick a complicated scheme why don't you!) and had to freehand as masking would have been impossible... A bit too dirty, again experimenting with weathering etc....blue Winders as per photo references...great little plane frequently seen at RAF Lakenheath and elsewhere around East Anglia: I know missing a few Ae (carpet monster) and a bit overdone with the weathering! Well whats next? My plan is do do a WIP on here as I build my other aircraft....involved in the Sabre STBG at the moment so will be a while. I plan to start with the Lakenheath aircraft during my lifetime.....Monogram F100D Super Sabre, Revell F4D Phantom II (done!), Academy F111F, Academy F15E, Academy F15C. Then I have the following in my stash..... Tamiya A10A with Bentwaters/Woodbridge decals,Hasegawa F16C Aggressor from Bentwaters, Hasegawa F4G and Hasegawa F16CJ, Revell A10A with Decals From Spangdahlem. That should keep me going. I plan to aquire an EF111A from Upper Heyford (have decals), Revell U2R/TR1A either Mildenhall or Alconbury respectively, SR71A Mildenhall (rare in 1/48) and maybe the Revell OV22 Osprey being used at Mildenhall and UH60 being used by the Pedros at Lakenheath! Any assistance/help/suggestions welcome.....plenty to keep the memories fresh.....my family are still at Beck Row right next to RAF Mildenhall!
