Here is my Trumpeter 1:144 Chengdu F-7-II which I completed back in 2013.
It's F-7-IIN "701" of No 5 "Arrow" Sqn, Air Force of Zimbabwe, based at Thornhill-Gweru AB, in the late 1980s.
The Trumpeter kit was a real let-down which is surprising since, being Chinese, they should have first-hand information on the real machine, a derivative of the MiG-21. The tailfin was closer to that of the -III variant (the MiG-21MF copy), the underside fin was too shallow, the tailplanes were so thick they almost looked like cushions and the undercarriage was such that, had I used it, the plane would appear to be standing on stilts!! Other areas were also suspect and the fit of the thick parts was bad.
Fortunately, I had the parts of a previously scrapped Revell MiG-21PF which came in handy to replace and/or fix the major errors, not without some extra work as in the case of the tailfin. I scratchbuilt some details for the cockpit, just enough to see something inside. The rear ends of the rocket pods were opened up. The kit was completely painted and varnished by brush and the decals came from a Berna Decals sheet. The tailfin markings lacked the black lines and I just about managed to paint them on.
The end result wasn't great but at least I managed to complete it and get something decently close to this particular variant of the MiG-21 family.
Thanks for looking and all comments are welcome
