  1. Hi all, Another pony heads out of stable for your delectation. She is, as you can see, adorned in the markings of the Fuerza Aerea Guatemalteca (the Guatemalan Air Force) as she was when operating in the mid-1950s. Specifically she is “FAG 315” (ex- 44-74902) and is reported in some records as being ex-Nicaraguan. She went on to be one of the last Mustangs to operate in Guatemala and was sold in the US in 1974 as N38227. She spent many, many years in a cosy barn on the ranch of Conny Edwards in Texas and eventually was the last of the 1974 purchase to hit the market. This was only relatively recently. This one shows a late 1950s scheme with the “FAG” Owl badge alongside. At other times she carried an Aztec marking. Later these badges were dropped. What did I use? 1. Kit – Tamiya P-51D Mustang 1/72 (49), with some F-51D parts added 2. Decals – Aztec “Mayan Gods” set (72-012). Thanks @busnproplinerfan 3. Aftermarket/other – only the underwing tanks, which were taken from a HobbyBoss F4U-1 as a cheap way of getting something close to what I needed 4. Paints – Humbrol Enamels – Polished Aluminium (27002), Polished Steel (27003), Matt Black, Insignia Yellow, Interior Green, a mix of Blues (89) and (104) for the tail markings and others Weathering etc, Prismacolor Silver pencil (canopy framing etc) I hope you're not too bored of my Mustngs yet....   2. Hi all, As the title suggests, this is a follow-on build of Bolivian F-51D Mustang “FAB-511”. My previous write-up as part of the earlier RFI tells her story. Now she is depicted later in life and in the colour scheme adopted up to the time of her retirement and eventual sale to Canada, to become C-GXUP. She went on to be a racer in the USA and eventually her sad demise came in 1996. I believe (if you believe some reports) that some of her parts went on to other machines. In these colours, albeit a bit ragged by this time, she returned to the North and looked as follows: Photo: public domain I think this was taken at Great Falls, Montana. These Bolivians arrived back in North America en masse at that time. All (I think) were initially Canadian registered and since then have gone on to be warbirds in many parts of North America. You'll see that I've gone for a more "in service" look. I had a few issues with her, not least of which was my shock when I removed the canopy mask yesterday and found a mass of green spray inside the windscreen! It meant disturbing my fairly neat settling of the windscreen (with Krital Klear) and polishing out the offending paint with Tamiya Polishing Compound. I also lost the ventral cover for the cooling system and had to rob one from a donor Airfix kit. I also wrestled for a fair while with the Uschi line. A word of warning - the DrawDecal decals are not fit for purpose really. They are way too pixelated. What did I do/use? It should be noted that ArmyCast recently included this machine in a recent decal release. The sheet contains a wide range of Mustangs but care should be taken. Not all the decals and/or colour profiles are correct. See my next Guatemalan Mustang RFI. Kit – Tamiya F-51D Mustang 1/72 (54). The dropped flaps are from an Airfix F-51D. Decals – ArmyCast flag (ACD 72 034) and serial, the kit stencils and warning markings, sharksmouth from the DrawDecal sheet for Cavalier F-51D C-GMUS (72s-P51-82). The Unit badge is home printed. Paint – Colourcoats Dark Green (ACUS20 ), Vietnam Mid Green FS24102 (ACUS19), Vietnam Tan (ACUS18 ) and Vietnam Gray FS36622 (ACUS17). Humbrol Scarlet (60), Black (33). Additionally, I used a variety of paints for the interior, lights, prop etc. Final coat of Humbrol Satincote. Uschi line for the aerial Weathering/Panel lines – Flory Dirt, Tamiya Weathering powders, Prismacolor Silver pencil and stippled Humbrol Silver (11) for some chipping/wear I hope you like her.   3. Hi all, This is my first ever Group Build. I was encouraged to do so by fellow BMers and naturally it follows a current build programme of Mustangs. For this build I will, again, be using the Tamiya kit. I know, it has some errors but these are few and the build is great. For me this is a bonus as I intersperse other less-perfect builds amongst them. It will be Out-of-the-Box except I will use Airfix flaps to get the dropped stance and aftermarket decals. The latter will be from Aztec. However, using the decals will be as far as I go as the colour profiles in the set are inaccurate. My build will not have the "badge" which, I undertand, is not Guatemalan. I will attempt to get the colours faded as best as my old hands will do so. I chose this machine because I have a parallel non-GB build nearly finished of FAG 315 earlier in her career. FAG 315 "N38227" is the last of the FAG machines to get sold within the US.   4. Morning all! Here is my latest roll out. She is the third (of ten, currently) in the line of F-51s that I have either partially built, painted or planned. Apparent to everyone is that she is not a regular operational machine. She formed part of the “Los Cofres” display and demonstration team of the Fuerza Aerea Guatemalteca (Guatemalan Air Force) that flew from La Aurora Airfield in the mid-1950s. She was acquired in 1954 and history seems to record that she was lost at some point in Costa Rica. The build is based around the Tamiya kit, offering me relatively easy builds so that I can get the volume through the paint shop. It is, though, a great kit and although it has some errors it is a pleasure to build. Like the previous Bolivian I dropped the flaps by using spare Airfix flaps. The challenge here was really the masking of the nose area. The contours clearly demand more than simple straight strips of tape. My method was to cut and apply each “square” separately. The colours are probably not entirely accurate. I have, however, researched as best as I can, including support from a couple of the South American/Central American aviation and modelling forums and produced what is probably a compromise. There are some things that I know to be correct – the overall natural metal (rather than the white shown in a couple of retouched photos), the lack of "dark" underside to the rear fuselage (applies the "306" at least _ have a photo, the larger version of the “FAG” lettering (see below) and the layout of the red striping and chevrons (also see below). The recent ArmyCast release for a “Los Cofres” machine (number “342”) shows differences. However, Youtube clips and various images show a different layout from theirs. I’m happy with my decision, right or wrong. See that she also had white prop tips – or at least it looks like that in the YouTube clip. You can see the larger “FAG, and the red chevrons in these shots: What did I use? Kit – Tamiya F-51D (54) Decals – Home printed serial, “FAG” and unit/team badge (thanks @timmas for drawing this). ArmyCast set for the mainwheel door lightning bolts and “squiggles”. Paints – Humbrol Hetalcote Polished Aluminium (27002), Matt blue (25), Insignia Red (153), Matt White (34), Matt Black (33), Blue (89)+(104) mix for the rudder stripes, Interior Green (226) and others. The final coat is Humbrol Satincote. Eduard canopy paint mask. Weathering/Panels – Flory Dirt, Tamiya Weathering Powders and Prismacolor Silver pencil. Here she is: I hope you like her. Martin
  5. Hi all, Another rollout for me and this time I have returned to an area of interest that I exploited a while back with my F-80, T-33s, F-86Fs, TB-26B and others. That is Latin America. This time I have returned to a machine that caught my eye a number of years ago as she was unusual to me and reasonably colourful. The model – the first of a two-part RFI – shows F-51D “FAB-511” of the Fuerza Aerea Boliviana around the time of her delivery to South American. The photos I have (below) – and they are easily sourced on the web – are stated to be of her upon delivery. I question that given the USAF C-54 and a Herc that sit in the background of at least one image. I therefore prefer to think that she was pre-delivery. I could be wrong! Having said that, there is at least one available image of her in these colours while in service. I built her before using an Airfix kit. this time I've gone for the Tamiya. I know it lacks the dropped flaps and has an incorrect spar but many Mustangs sat with flaps up and you cant see the spar ;). The plus side is the finish of the Tamiya kit, whch is superior in many ways. This was my first effort a few years ago and when I had just got back to modelling: She is ex-45-11453 and prior to going to Bolivia she was, post US military, registered as N5479V and was ultimately sold by Sanford Aviation to the FAB. She was delivered to Bolivia on 10th June 1966. Her Bolivian career ended in December 1977 when she was returned to North America as C-GXUP. Thereafter she became a racer and was finally trashed – poor her – on 12th February 1996 at Palm City, FL after being starved of fuel ☹. I’ll describe more of that in the next RFI – Part 2! In building her I have chosen to vary the panels a little to give a break from a sea of same-tone NMF. It seems that by this time the putties and painted upper side of the wings was a thing of the past. Being a Tamiya kit, and as I said earlier, she did not have the dropped flaps and sadly (and wrongly) my impatience got the better of me and so I chose not to cut them and drop as I should have. Next time! . So, what did I use? Well, here goes …. And it’s not a lot!: Kit – Tamiya F-51D Mustang 1/72 (54) Decals – Blue Rider “Chaco War”, home printed serial, and the kit stencils etc. The rudder was painted. Paints – Humbrol Interior Green (226), Insignia Red (155), Insignia Yellow (153), Gloss Green (??), Metalcote 27002 and 27003 mixes, Humbrol washes. Colourcoats Olive Drab, Matt black, and Humbrol Clearcote varnishes. Washes – Flory dirt plus some swipes of Tamiya Weathering powders A simple build. Here she is: I hope you like her.   6. Well, I made a start on this kit at my local IPMS club's meeting and build night yesterday. I got most of the interior painting done and glued the wings together. This should go pretty quickly. Before: After
  7. Well seeing as I didn't read the rules for this STGB my main build (a ramjet with whif markings) has been put on hold, I picked up this little gem from my local model shop at the weekend. We all now this great little kit from airfix but as per usual I'll open up with some pictures of the box and the plastic. And, there is the plastic still wrapped in it's bag. The level of detail on this little kit really is fantastic, for it's scale and price! Just such a shame about the sprue gates!! They even nailed the gear bays, which a good few others missed in both this scale and larger! Here's the extra little sprue for the F-51, which covers bombs, rockets and prop. That takes care of the plastic, so it's on to the markings. I'm gonna keep this pretty much straight out the box so I'll be doing the USAF 12th FBS/18th FBG from Korea, because who can deny a shark mouth! I doubt I'll add any extras apart from getting some masks for the canopy, but you'll never know what might get picked up from the big 'H'. So, there we go, this one is all prepped and ready for the revised start date, which thankfully gives me time to possible still get another bird for my main build so watch this space.

Evening, Have had this lurking on the shelf for a while with the aircraft pretty much complete but struggling to get the base finished off, well today gave me an opportunity to get it wrapped up. The kit is beautiful and I had no trouble whatsoever with this one, the rockets were a bit fiddly for my fat fingers but the rest of it was spot on. I wanted to try something a bit different and had an idea to portray the aircraft just airborne off a strip somewhere in SE Asia, with the main gear almost fully in the wheel wells. This bit was quite straight forward, but something was niggling away at me about the whole thing, the stationary prop just didn't sit well with me. I just happened to have a cheap old mobile that had died stashed away, it's amazing the things you keep, anyway pulling this apart revealed a tiny motor for the vibrate function....could I motorise the prop? A plasticard support structure in the nose, some carefully routed wiring and a battery holder and switch on the base and......I'll let the pics do the talking.   9. Here is my F-51D Mustang in 1/72. Made with Italeri kit (lot of errors!), Eduard PE set and Pavla resin propeller. Numbers and "sharkmouth" made by myself. Aircraft serial 44-74384, code FF-384, 12th FBS, 18th FBG, Korea 1951/1952. I was suprised how hard is to find complete information about any Mustang from Korean War. Well known painting schemes are full of insinuations or errors (even FF-736 or FF-943!). Korean Mustangs had 3 different, optional propeller types, changing colors of wing tips and spinners, different "sharkmouth" types etc. That`s why I choose this rare painting scheme - it was the only F-51 of 12th FBS that I was sure how it should look like. :-)
  10. Morning guys, yesterday at night i finished another mustang, built for the Mustang STGB here on BM. She was built and painted along with my Sweet Arlene, but i did not have time to finish her (i wanted to try some more dirty weathering for her), so she had to wait. Hope it did worth The kit is again well known Airfix P/F-51D, this time i used CMK wheels (i like how much their wheels "sits down", for the fully loaded plane it looks good to me), Quickboost seat and exhausts, stole the antena stick from Italeri P-51A (i m pretty sure i m not going to built that one, i m not THAT crazy.. and the Airfix antene stick is professionaly hiden in so much flash, it looks like part of the platic frame.. ). I did add some tubes on cowling, under exhausts, there is some opening and it appears some late mustangs had a "tube" fitted in and on photo it shows this one had it too. So i tried to do that on the kit too. Next i added new glass to gunsight and few wires around (u/c legs, rockets and one under tail). Other than that it was build just OOB. The decals are also from the kit. The only problem i had with the USAF letters, on the top side of wing i screwed it a bit and there is some silvering I was lazy to cut the single letters, next time i might do that. Also the sharkmouth was a bit fight to fit (but it can as well be just by hands), when i wanted to settle it down following photos of real aircraft, i ended up with almost 2mm gap between the two sides under nose. Had to paint it with red and it is slightly darker red shade Also the FF-943 flying as warbird on airshows has black stripe painted on bottom side of wing, ending on top side behind MG´s. This is not in the kit instructions, but i liked it more + the photo shows some kind of darker area on the leading edge around the guns and many more mustangs from the same unit had that stripes, so i thought it would bring a bit of life to the full aluminium airframe. Speaking about photos of real aircraft - the only photo i have shows this mustang quite clean. But i wanted to build some dirty bird, so i used photos of some heavily weathered Korean War mustangs as references, hope you wont mind..   11. Hi everyone, For show is this wee beasty which is part of the Mustang STGB. As usual I wanted to do something different for the GB and once I saw this I just knew I had to build it. This aircraft was build new by Cavalier Aircraft Corp in 1968 and was based off their Mustang II. Designed as a Close Air Support/Counter-Insurgency aircraft the original RR Merlin was replaced with a RR Dart 510 turboprop. Despite the radically improved performance and payload increase no sales were made. In 1970 the prototype was sold to Piper which spawned the Piper PA-48 Enforcer. The basis for this is Tamiya’s 1/48th F-51D, to which was added the Heritage Aviation Models Turbo Mustang III conversion kit. Unfortunately it’s not the best of resin mouldings but it is the only one I know of out there. The build was a wee bit difficult but that was mostly my fault....did things completely ar#e-about, but I’m still pretty happy to have this really unusual and brutal beast added to the collection.   12. So I went a little crazy: I'm building two Airfix F-51Ds, one SAAF and one RAAF, using the AIMS UK & Commonwealth in Korea decals. First off is 361/"Miss Marounichi", formerly F-51D 44-74863, of the SAAF: Despite what the decal sheet says (red spinner and intake), it looks pretty conclusively to me like she was a yellow-nosed a/c. Apparently she had the uncuffed prop. Second up is A68-720, formerly P-51D-NT-25 44-84482. I don't have an image for her (help in that area welcome!), but apparently she had a Dallas hood. I'm unsure if she had a cuffed or uncuffed prop, it seems to vary for RAAF F-51Ds. Anyhow, gave them their bath.

Hi, After being bought this for Christmas along with a Spitfire F22 I decided to set aside some time for the building of this over the weekend/new year, I've primed this with a generic primer from the local pound shop which seems to do quite well. I've also ventured into Airbrushing for the first time with a "Expo AB652 Starter Airbrush kit" which was bought for me by the extended family which uses the can's of propellant which I can get a 750ml for £8, and did a small test with a scrap Spitfire mk1a I had in the drawer so have enclosed some photo's of my first attempt! First off the Unboxing: First use of the Airbrush: Will get some more shots of the interior up as soon as I can! Thanks for looking John!
