  1. After a hiatus of a few weeks, I’ve decided to give modelling a go again, this time with a civil airliner. I got this DC-10 on eBay for a bargain £20, not realising the price reflected the fact it has been started. However, it’s not too bad, with just the bulkheads glued in and one engine pod built, so I’m going to plough on. Oh and the windscreen is snapped in two. I actually really like the American Airlines scheme, that all over silver looks pretty cool. How is one supposed to deal with the decal covering all of the passenger windows though!? I can’t apply it before I fit the body together as it’ll be a nightmare to paint without ruining the decal, but if I add it at the end, I won’t be able to poke any window holes through. How do people do this? Or is it better to find some window decals and don’t bother with the transparent parts except to fill the fuselage holes in? Can anyone help?
  2. After a long hiatus I’m back. In fairness I started this model well over 12 months ago but due to a recurring loss of mojo, it kept returning to the shelf of doom for what seemed like an eternity! When I did eventually go back to it in earnest I intended to finish it in the PIA delivery scheme, however this scheme proved to be particularly challenging! Unhappy with my efforts I ended up completely stripping the paint off it, not very successfully I may add. I briefly toyed with an doing an Air Florida machine, but quickly moved onto something a little simpler as by this point I just wanted it finished. Anyhow here is the eventual end result, Iberia’s second DC-10 - christened ‘Costa Dorada’ after the north eastern Catalonian costal region. The decals are by 26 decals, with the Authentic Airliner Decals providing the flight deck and cabin windows. The obligatory Halfords Appliance white, and Racking grey were used straight out of the rattle can for the airframe. As a interesting footnote the real aircraft featured paintings by the Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dali in the passenger cabin!
  3. Eastern Express has released the DC-10-30! Wonder of it could be modified using an EE MD-11, sanding and remolding the tail section, to make a DC-10-40?? Anyone willing to try??? 1/144Here are sprue pics.....
  4. Something I have been hiding in amongst all the other builds I am working on is this beautiful old Hasegawa 1/200 original Love Liner200 series McDonnell DC-10-30. At the time of release and despite the 1/200 scale, I felt this to be above and beyond the accuracy of both Revell and Airfix's 1/144 DC-10 kits, and to date, I still do however Welsh Models and Authentic Airliners DC-10s have both far outranked the likes of Revell and Airfix. This particular kit is one of 10 Hasegawa DC-10's I have in my stash, one of which was purchased part (and very badly) built which makes it a spares kit in case any of my stash turn out to be missing parts from storage and their previous owners. Starting life as an Alitalia DC10, I am building this as in a 'What-If' Livery and are using the assembled tail fin and centre engine assembly from the model I have that was supplied already part built, as a guideline for a new tail plane livery. I was also glad it was supplied part built as it immediately highlighted the centre engine and tail fin interior crusty looks which needed attention. I've purchased 3 sets of Nazca Decals detailing sets for some of these stashed DC-10's of mine and will be using one set on this along with the collection of bits I have in mind for the 'What-If' finished livery. So if you are a DC10, tri-jet or 70's widebody civil fan, sit back and enjoy please... The picture below starts to highlight the issue with the tail fin and centre engine as 2 parts prior to assembly - the insides of the tail fin are hollow and the M & F joint lugs will all become very visible when joined. Using the parts from the half assembled spares kit of the same, I took these photos to show what the centre engine would have looked like without any attention - the hollow tail fin and lugs very much visible even in 1/200 scale. So with 2 options to follow i.e. fill the tail fin hollows and remove the M&F join lugs before assembly, or fit an infill skirt, I chose the latter. Inserting the infill tube also left the engine intake with a nice and smooth inner surface as the kits engine interior was horrific. Using some Evergreen 0.5 inch tube, an inner sleeve was made easily, snug and looks great. I was not sure if the extra tubing might make this a tail-sitter so I popped a couple of blobs of lead up front as a make-safe I know its lazy using corroguard decals but it is also a challenge getting them in place and flat so I prefer to have a bash if I have the correct decals in stock I am actually one main wheel short now as I swallowed one by accident while eating tic-tacs from the work bench at the same time as un-masking these - my hands got out of sink So that's where it is. With the BA Negus 737 and TU144 both on the go at the same time, I am unsure how soon this will progress but I really love the kit - just as much as that Hasegawa L1011 I completed a week or so back. Thanks for looking in. John
  5. Hi, I have just joined this interesting network. Can you recommend reliable webshops in Europe, where you can buy wing and tailplane center sections., especially for the DC-10-30, which I am in the process of building one -30 and two -40. I am familiar with Kingkit, Hannants and FDcal. As far as Kingkit, I have bought the last set they had, Hannants did not have any at present, and neither did FDcal. Best wishes PanAmFlyer2
  6. My latest finished project is the DC-10-30 in KLM colours. The kit, windows and windscreen decals are from Authentic Airliners. The decals are from the 26 and Revell (logo’s and registration). The kit is really great and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to build a DC-10-30. I made a detailed comparison between the Revell, Authentic Airliners, Welsh (fuselage) and Contrails (engine) offerings, which you can find on the Dutch page here. The AA kit is the winner (clearly). Although the kit isn’t terribly difficult to build, I did have some problems with the primer. By trying out various primers, I eventually found one that didn’t result in “fish eyes”. Also, this has been my longest project so far (over 70 hours). This has mainly been due to the paint scheme (it’s a pain to get the metal colours right), but in the end I’m rather happy with the result. For the paints I used Revell 50 with a dash of white of the upper fuselage, Alcladd II ALC-111 Magnesium for the exhausts, ALC-119 Airframe aluminium for the engines, ALC-116 semi matt aluminium for the different colours with the engines and ALC-105 polished aluminium for the belly of the fuselage and the engines and leading edges of the engines as well. I also used ModelMasters Chrome Silver as a wash to smooth out the colour differences in the engines (so they become less stark). The Coroguard was painted with Vallejo Primer and the simply putting Alclad II Aqua Gloss on top of it (I found the colour to be just right). Model Masters Canadian Vodoo Gray was used to the lighter part of the Coroguard as well as the wing/body fairing, a part of the nose and the trailing edges of the wings and horizontal stabilizers. The decals from 26 (which actually come from their MD-11 sheet) are excellent as well. I would not recommend using the Coroguard decals from Nazca, as they are designed for the wrongly shaped Revell kit and do not fit on the AA kit! My next project will be the Czech Master Resin Douglas DC-2 orange KLM 1:144, which is part of Dutch a group build. Anyway, enough talk. I hope you enjoy the pictures, thanks for looking and see you next time! And finally, a picture with its sibling the MD-11 (also Authentic Airliners) that I build two years ago.
