  1. This will be my first entry. Been hanging on to this one for a while waiting to start.
  2. Hi, This is one of my entries into the STGB. It's going to be the Revell 737-800 converted to the -700 and wearing the colours of much troubled Cameroonian carrier Camair-Co. The kit is one of several that I've bought over the years. Since the appearance of the Zvezda kit, the Revell kit has been eclipsed in terms of detail and ACCURATE detail at that!! However, it can still be made into a fairly decent model of the 737NG. This is the colour scheme I've chosen for this build. Camair-Co is the national carrier of Cameroon and seems to routinely have its fair share of financial troubles and loss making operations. Their fleet consists of one 767-300 (decals for which are available from F-Dcal), a couple of 737-700 and a couple of Xian MA-60 turbo props. One of the main criticisms of the Revell 737 is the rather questionable rendition of the CFM56 engines. The kit parts are a curious mix between the older CFM56 engine as fitted to the 737-3/4/500 aircraft, the Classic series (that must make the -100/200 versions be known as the dinosaur series!!??) and those fitted to the 737-6/7/8/900 series (the NG series). There have been numerous articles and suggestions put out as to the best way to correct the kit parts, ranging from smoothed plastic shims on the underside and stretching the intake lip to using paper rolled up to form some kind of intake lining. However, all of that is now unnecessary thanks to Brazmodels who have come up with resin aftermarket sets to allow both versions of the NG engine to be made (the original CFM56-7 with the longer core engine nozzle and the newer CFM56-7BE with the shorter nozzle). The set I'm using is for the original CFM56-7 engine. To convert to the -700 series, the -800 has to have two sections of fuselage removed ahead of and behind the wing, each being roughly 20mm (ok if you insist - 20.78mm ahead and 19.79mm behind). There are a set of plans available from drawdecal.com (http://www.drawdecal.com/downloads/) that show where the modifications for each NG version should be made with reference to the Revell kit (and the Zvezda kit too). With the fuselage marked up, it was time to cut Eventually, I ended up with something that resembled the -700 The ends of the cuts are a bit rough and not particularly true, but some decent amount of filler will take care of that. Currently, the sections have had strips of plastic card glued to the inside edges to allow the various them to be joined and positioned to maintain a straight fuselage. And finally, stung by the recent decision by the USITC in favour of Bombardier and their C-series, Boeing in a desperate move to extract as much mileage from the 737, have offered this as the "all American" alternative to the C-series.....   3. This is my latest completion: Boeing's big twin in the form of a 1/144th KLM Boeing 777-306ER. This model was based on Minicraft's 777-200 kit, with numerous modifications. I inserted Braz's fuselage extension plugs forward and aft of the wings, did a bit of re-profiling of the nose area, added Contrails' extended and raked wingtips, completely re-worked Contrails' GE90-115B engines and pylons, and finished it off by using a DrawDecal set for the current KLM scheme. All paints were from Halfords' automotive range. This was a fairly straight-forward conversion, but I did create a fair bit of extra work by modifying the engines. However, I think it was well worth it and they are now a better representation of the real thing. Boeing 777-306/ER, KLM, PH-BVA, 'De Hoge Veluwe National Park' Happy modelling! Tom
  4. Hello all, Time to start a new project, the Boeing 757 in Monarch markings. I've spent a great deal of time researching the problems with the Minicraft kit and am going to try and attempt to correct with the help of Braz parts and hard work. The markings of course come from Draw Decals and are very well printed, the blue and yellow Monarch scheme is very elegant. Braz parts,as seen in the pic below, are the replacement nose, tail cone, and tail. New Braz Rolls Royce engines were also purchased. The first task will be to glue up the fuselage and cut away the nose and tail. My Minicraft kit suffers from sink marks and a cracked wing, so I have a second kit coming to rob some parts from.   5. This is going to be my next civvie - converting a 1/144th Boeing 777-200 to a 777-300ER, using the Minicraft kit with parts from Contrails, Braz and Draw Decals. Here I have pictured the Minicraft 'standard' -200 series fuselage which will be my starting point, along with Braz's fuselage plugs to increase the length to a -300. I have a set of Contrails' GE90-115B engines, as the -300ER is powered by this engine which is considerably larger than the engines found on the -200 versions, along with the extended and raked wingtips from the same company. Finally, a set of KLM transfers from Draw Decal complete the package. My starting point with this project is the engines. Contrails provide an after-market option, which looks as follows: Although these engines are a reasonable representation of the real GE90-115B, when I used them in the past (about 5 years ago now!) on a previous conversion, something didn't look quite right to my eye: In my opinion, and I stress my opinion, the engine cowling is too long, the intake ring is vertical where on the real aircraft it's slanted slightly forward, and I feel the whole engine sits too low. Also, the upper and lower lines of the cowling are parallel on the Contrails parts, whereas on the real engine the shape is quite bulbous. In this picture of the real aircraft (used for illustrative purposes only), you can see a significant curve on the upper lines of the engine, as well as the fact that the top of the pylon is actually level with the upper surface of the wing, unlike the replacement engines which I feel sit too low: So... I decided to do some surgery... The red area in the picture below was removed (approx 3mm) and the most forward cut was made at a slight angle to allow for the intake ring to slant downwards slightly and create the bulbous shape. Notice the difference in the shape to the picture of the real thing above: After the front and rear parts were reattached, the fan and intake ring detailed and inserted, and the engine cowling attached to the pylon, I think the shape looks a lot better. The pylon itself was modified extensively to bring the whole engine up slightly, and all panel lines were rescribed onto the modified parts: I must stress there was nothing particularly scientific about this, and it was all done by eye, but I think a significant improvement on the original Contrails parts. Compare my modified engines with the original build behind - I think it captures the look of the real thing much better now: Two, at least to my eyes, more accurate GE90-115B engines ready for installation: Next up will be cutting the fuselage up and inserting Braz's plugs - something I know from last time is more tricky than it sounds!
