  1. Looking for experts on the early BF-109E models. The two cowl MG-17 machine guns were mounted in an ofset position. The right side gun was mounted slightly behind the left hand gun due to the position of the ammunition boxes and the feeds to the guns. The is meant that the ends of the barrels were at different distances behind the nose. They barrels fire through a (let's call it a trough as I don't know the proper term) in the cowling over the engine. Were the back ends of these troughs also offset, i.e., was one further back than the other? I have yet to find a picture showing the troughs to advantage as it would have to be taken from above looking down on the nose. This gun arraingment was redone in the "F" models, I believe, but I could be wrong on that. Picture attached showing what I'm referring to. Any answers would be appreciated.
  2. The late Paul Allen had the passion and the means to bring many classic aircraft back into airworthy condition. Here are some of the Luftwaffe aircraft in his collection. I hope you enjoy seeing them. Video via Youtube. Mike
  3. Hi all - this is the Eduard E-3 - a very nice kit if a little tricky in places - I did make a few little little mistakes during the construction but nothing I wasn't able to sand and fill my way out of. I replaced the gun barrels with some turned brass aftermarket but otherwise it was all out of the box - though being a profipack, it came with masks and some PE. Painted with Mr Color Lacquers and weathered with Mig Washes and Oil paint - it was an enjoyable build. Battle of Britain scheme. This build kind of brings me full circle - the first model I posted in Britmodeller was a 109E - posted just under 2 years ago. I still love that little E but this is certainly a nice upgrade. My skill level has improved since then and hopefully will continue to improve, 2 years in and I feel like I've just touched the tip of the iceburg Thanks for looking John
  4. Bf-109E-3 | Hasegawa | 1/72 Lt. Waldemar Wubke, Germany, 9/JG54 Finished this on 9/27/2020. This was a pretty straightforward build of the early 90's Hasegawa Bf-109E-3. I chose Waldemar Wubke's aircraft because I love the impromptu camouflage stripes applied at the unit level. Other units at that time had "X's and other different schemes to break up the light blue on the sides of the aircraft. The kit was pretty basic, so even taking my time the build was only about one week. The decals didn't look very sharp, so I only used the stencils and the "11". The rest of the decals came from the spares. Once on the aircraft the decals actually looked better, so I probably could've used them all. This kit was not as detailed or easy to put together as the Tamiya one I did a couple of months ago, but it was still a fairly stress-free build. In terms of external detail, it looks about the same as the Tamiya. The only frustrating part was the landing gears: the holes for the gears were oversized and they weren't keyed, so you could rotate the gear and get it misaligned (which is what ended up happening). Also, the wheel wells were enclosed, but still didn't have detail in them. Since this was early war, I did a minimum of weathering on the paint and a minimum of wear on the aircraft. I wanted the exhaust to be lighter colored (assuming the engine wasn't as worn) so I used Tamiya smoke. It turned out OK, but I'm not a real fan of the smoke paint . Paints: Decanted Mr. Surfacer 1500 Black > Hataka RLM 02/71/65 > Mr. Color GX113 dull coat Decals: A mix of different kits > stencils and numbers are kit decals Aftermarket: Eduard steel seat belts > SBS wheels Thanks for looking! Questions, comments and constructive criticism always welcomed.
  5. Here is my depiction of a Messerschmitt Bf-109E-1, just following the end of the SCW in 1939. Note that the Condor Legion roundels have been replaced with the yoke and arrows and the red/yellow discs. Upon finishing this model I came to believe that perhaps it is even meaner and dastardly looking than its SCW counterpart. Something about that Falangist logo...Brrr...sends chills down my spine. In any case...a decent kit and it fit together well. The paint is Vallejo Air and I used their RLM02 for the fuselage. My research has told me that all the previous ideas we had about these planes being light grey, silver grey, or just grey, were wrong. They were more green-grey, as shown here. On a side note, I will be using the same paint on the 109E that Tintin steals in "King Ottokar's Sceptre" when I get into that GB later this year! The decals went on well, including the stencils. The red/yellow roundels were a bit translucent. Had I known that I would have given them a backing of some sort. Weathered with my black/brown oil wash. Here 'tis...
  6. This fantastic kit has just fallen onto my workbench & the artwork & "storyline" is as always - very compelling... I can find loads of info about the Hurricane - but nothing about this particular BF109E - does anyone have any extra information - unit / pilot etc... Any help would be most appreciated.
  7. I've started Eduard's 1/48 BF-109E-4 to be built as Adolf Galland's Dec 1940 mount. The Eduard kit is really nice, but it is finicky and has some dimension issues. The first issue is the chord on the slats is to deep, I reduced it by .040" by cementing a .040" piece of stretched sprue into the well, trimming a like amount off the slat, after it was dry, sanding down the sprue and restoring the panel lines with a razor saw. nearside sanded and panel lines restored, farside not done yet Rather than assemble the complete engine and struggle to align everything, I opted to cut the engine lower sides out, cement the exhaust on and basically treat the exhaust like a resin aftermarket (it's so much easier than installing each stack piece by piece afterwards. A piece of brass rod for the prop and a couple of .040" plastic pieces cemented to the upper cowl and drilled works for the prop. I also cut sections of engine case and glued them into the cowl where they could be seen through the openings The cockpit is quite nice with the photoetch panels, but the supplied seatbelts had a garish, cartoon look, so I installed them prior to painting, and painted them in situ. I've now started the final assembly and painting (at this time Galland's plane was finished in the 71/02/65 scheme) The Eduard kit is great, with a little rework, the only place I've had to fill was the bottom cowl seam (some spreader bars, and some trimming/shimming, but no other putty - I hate putty!) Thanks for looking, Colin
