  2. Completed as J-9552 in the livery of No. 2 Squadron (army co-operation), somewhere in southern England early in its carrier, most likely sometime in winter 1931/1932. Judging so by the rudder stripes, which are still in the pre-1930 order. However, all things considered, the plane was from the 1928 contract, it was stored for some time, and I do not think anyone in the service would have cared too much about repainting the stripes unless the rudder needed to be replaced. Therefore, probably the airplane could have worn the same markings anytime in its service carrier, i.e. from 12/1931 to 06/1933. The kit is quite a nice Phoenix vacform from the start of the 90´s, with white metal parts by Aeroclub. The main parts come from the kit, but many details were either scratchbuilt or taken from the spare part box. The build thread is here: Brush painted with an assortment of enamel paints, roundels by Xtradecal, serial numbers from the kit, stencils from my spare decals. No matter how hard I tried, the rudder serial number did not fully blend with. I will have to survive. Altogether very enjoyable old-fashioned job, though I will be glad to take a break from vacform modelling for a while. As usual with me, no rigging.
  3. The mythical Greek Titan Atlas played inconspicuous but important role. He supported sky so that it would not fall on earth. Armstrong Whitworth Atlas played less dramatic, but no less important role, supporting the British Army as the mount of the army cooperation squadrons. In total 478 Atlases of all versions were built and the type remained in production from 1927 until 1933. The Atlas Mk.I, and its DC trainer derivative, served with the RAF for eight years, until 1935. The kit is quite a nice vacform from the start of the 90´s, with white metal detail parts apparently by Aeroclub. Army cooperation was not exactly stellar role, and the amount of reference material reflects it. Not that much is available. However, yesterday, while searching for some Atlas references on the internet, I came across https://www.kestrelpublications.com/shop-online. I have not been able to resist, paid, and downloaded Profile #20 today. At first sight, I am excited by its contents, and I am afraid that after thorough reading, more profiles from the offer will follow. I admit, I have not heard about Kestrel Publications before. Do some of you have experience with the printed form of the booklets?
  4. Afternoon, I've finally given into temptation and made a start on this one. I have some big(ish) ideas to go with this kit - we'll see how many of them come to fruition. Things I definitely want to do are: - Drop the flaps - Separate all the flight control surfaces, - Add external (and possibly internal) lighting - Motorise the props My inclination is to keep all the doors closed up - out of the box the cargo hold is fairly plain, and I think it would take a lot of work to get it in to a state that I would be happy with. Also, I'm inclined to do it 'in-flight', so whilst the ramp could be down, it's more likely to be up. I'm still undecided on whether to have the wheels up or down - the kit wheels are rather strange slab-sided affairs, and I'm not aware of any AM replacements. I have the PE set and paint mask, but don't think I'll be bothering with the SAC landing gear - I'm a bit sceptical about the utility of these in most cases. I think this aircraft is quite well suited to dropping the flaps - it has a very simple high-lift system: no leading edge devices and dropped-hinge flaps with a fixed vane on the trailing edge. This should make getting the geometry correct that bit easier. So far, I've mostly been cutting things up, starting with one of the flaps and flap-hinge fairings: I've also cut out the ailerons, elevators and rudder, so I'll need to get the Evergreen strip out are start building up the missing parts. I might cut out the spoilers too, possibly only on one side, as these are also used for roll control and I want to try and capture a 'dynamic' snapshot as it were. If anyone has any advice on lighting, I'm all ears! http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234957864-adding-led-lights-to-models-any-good-how-to-guides/ Thanks for looking! Andrew

  9. Ok, as the RAF are finally getting their aircraft delivered, does anyone know of any decal suppliers doing any for the Revell 1/72 kits? https://www.gov.uk/government/news/first-uk-a400m-atlas-delivered-to-the-raf
  10. Pics from Darwin taken at the SAC museum in Nebraska The Atlas was one of the first generation missiles and interestingly enough the famous WD-40 spray can trace it origins back to this missile as it was developed to protect its fuel tanks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SM-65_Atlas The Missile The Launch Console
